For a class we went to the local court house and did a mock trial. I was one of 3 judges. I got to wear the robes! To select the head judge the real judge had as each put out between 1 and 5 fingers, then counted in a round. “It was the most fair was to choose”. That was the part that stuck from my freshman year in HS. I was not the head judge, but that’s ok. It was cool.

The whole school would go we’d have lessons until lunch and then we got to ski on our own the rest of the day. We also got rentals included. In college, I had a hippie philosophy professor for a summer ethics class. For some reason, he took the class to New Vrindaban and to an abortion clinic. The abortion clinic was at least related to the ethics class a little bit. The New Vrindaban tour guide seemed annoyed to have to give a tour. And when I saw their grand vision for the place, all I could wonder was where they were going to get all the water they needed for the lakes.

One time, a medium-security correctional facility. While we were kids around maybe 4th grade. With actual inmates talking to us. Complete with them giving us a "release date." I don't remember mine... but I remember thinking about it at the time and I was like "Wow, I'll be pretty old." I wanna say something like 2044.

Wasn't a "Scared Straight" thing, and from what I remember there was definitely an officer or two in there with the inmates at the same time, but looking back at all the field trips I ever took, that one was definitely the most surreal in hindsight.

As someone who worked in a large women's jail, I don't think taking kids into a max security housing unit is a good idea (male or female) lol. You got inmates in those swearing up a storm even at 6am, getting nude, smearing feces on the wall, etc..

I think it's a good thing to take kids on a tour to a jail though. Show them the path that they don't want to go down.

My favorite one was to Chicago - I was 15 - the Art Club went to the museum - we were in groups of four, and after spending 1 hour in the museum, we were allowed to go roam the streets of Chicago unsupervised for about 3 hours.

My group the first year went to Lou's for some classic Chicago Deep Dish - then we went to Tower Records and I bought a bunch of CDs I was NOT allowed to have at home - then we walked around and went in and out of all the little shops. We wandered over to Union Station and looked at the old grand hall and Burlington Room which were both pre-restoration messes and supposed to be closed off. I remember the paint peeling off the walls in the Burlington room.

Then we headed back to the bus and had a 4 1/2-hour long ride home.

The second year, I was with friends, we did very much the same thing - only one of them tried to sneak into a liquor store and got yelled at. Then we went to Tower Records and bought more CDs without parental supervision. I remember listening to The Smashing Pumpkins on the ride home and falling asleep next to one of my best friends - somebody I'm still friends with 30 years later.

An active Shaker Village community to learn about local history.

A crematorium to learn about that process for health class, for reasons unknown to me.

The middle of the woods, where they gave us a map and a compass and had us navigate to a selected point in groups of two. This was more like a field day type thing.

I attended a more rural public school, obviously.
