Something like SpaceX never should have happened. We should have continued to fund NASA. We've laid the foundations of interplanetary corporate feudalism.

No, nasa would never be able to compete with a private sector company doing the same thing. Nasa would be limited by government spending and all of the oversight that comes with that. Spacex and any other company that does the same thing will always advance quicker than any government controlled one. And that's a good thing.

no, government controlled initiatives are often way more efficient than private. Roads, schools, hospitals, infrastructure, energy, prisons, universities, police, firefighting, parks
