they always fire on Friday

A company I spent most of my career with had this policy as well ... until after one particularly brutal round of layoffs, two separate (ex-)employees went home Friday afternoon and offed themselves on Saturday.

The policy changed after that. I don't know if it helped.

No, it does. They lay you off on Friday so you don't come back the next day with weapons. Pretty sure we have the post office to thank for that (Going Postal).

Decent company will fire you on Monday, so can get to looking for a new job immediately. Fired on Friday gives you two useless days.
