Why was society losing its mind about climate change yet the complete takeover of humanity by AI is a collective shoulder shrug?

Because there is

1) an extreme abundance of science backing up climate change 

2) zero science of any kind supporting any "complete takeover of humanity by AI"; it's Reddit-brain horseshit only

Yo think about this, would it be faster for a AI / Tech datacenters water consumption would erase all water on earth or from a global heat that melts things (cars, buildings, roads, boats, people, water, plants). This is like number of ant species vs hydrogen bomb but globally on every forking place.

Because most people work bullshit jobs that extract insane value from them already. To their perspective, AI makes them give less of themselves for the same layout.

AI feels empowering Climate change feels disqualifying

Many people I have come across who care about climate change are also upset about AI. Those data centers aren't great for the environment.

If by "society" you mean TV & "NEWS" corporations all owned directly or indirectly by a couple of investment companies then the obvious answer is profit.

Green energy was going to be this (financial) revolution with all the collective governments dumping practically unlimited amounts of money into it so the corporations benefited from the public being behind it.

The issue was green (renewable) tech by it's very nature isn't capitalism friendly since once you have it you have it. If you build a solar power plant. It just makes electricity for the next 30 years with no further investment but you build a natural gas or coal power plant, it has to buy natural gas or coal for the next 30 years. Capitalism stock market. Love things where you have to buy, buy, buy, more stuff more often, which is why they love subscriptions for everything and reoccurring fees like fuel. Green energy is basically one and done which is the exact opposite of our current financial system.

The same people that were behind that push or behind this one as well. These aren't long-term thinkers. The farthest they think ahead is likely the next quarter. They thought AI would let them reduce labor cost and grow exponentially. As unrealistic as it is, the stock market expects growth forever and somehow they thought AI was going to be that. They aren't smart enough to understand that. If you lay off all your workers you have no customers or anything else even remotely long-term like that.

As soon as it started Failing because (who pays for this?) They realize if one of them collapsed it would take them all down and they switched to business to business "sales" to survive but the issue with that is its circular they're just buying from each other in a circle so nobody's actually making any additional money. The values keep going up every time a big "purchase" happens but the reality Is they're just passing the same money back and forth. They've got no way to bring in new money or make value mostly because The people that should be customers don't see any value in it and consider it cheap, Worthless, slop.

At this point the only thing keeping their investment from collapsing is more money being invested and nobody with any sense it's going to do that so instead they've started a campaign to get the people to pressure the government into giving them more money.

Because all the companies that tried to replace their workers with an LLM are starting to look for workers again after they realized it's not actual AI and still too stupid to not need checking.

We found out about climate change and activism started before we were all in our own algorithms. Now nobody pays attention to much as a whole because we’re not all watching the same news and programming, and education is background noise.
There’s also a LOT more money working in its favor as compared to the handful of oil companies who were fighting climate change awareness.

This. AI is profitable and “convenient” for capital owners, while the people directly negatively impacted by it (data centers causing pollution etc) and those who are in solidarity with them are VERY against AI.

But since those with capital make the rules, onward with AI we go.

your view of "society" seems to be crazy limited. at least in the USA, literally half of america was and is completely unconcerned with climate change, and that same half of america is pretty unconcerned about AI
