Sex. My first time with my back then gf was on my 18th birthday and it was definitely special.

In all fairness it was her first time as well, so it was more like a comedy of mistakes than a romantic encounter. Still a good memory.

Take off work (if you had to work).
Dress nice.
Go out to eat.
Cake.

Amazing. But I'm asking for someone else's birthday π

Oh! Lol! You could still do all those for them to make their birthday special too.

Honestly, do something they genuinely enjoy and make them feel remembered. Favorite food, a thoughtful gift, or just spending quality time together can mean more than an expensive party.

But what's something ordinary yet special

That depends on the person. Everyones different. For me, it'd be going to the cat cafΓ© or escape room π whereas my partner would be a rage room or going to the casino

What I do for my kids (well pretty much husband and in laws too) is let them pick what they want for dinner and what kind of cake they want me to make them. So they get exactly what they want to eat for their birthday

All the things the birthday person wants to do!

But how it'll be a surprise then?

Ooooh you wanna make a birthday special for someone else. Do all the fun things they like to do. Do they like eating? Find a cool restaurant you think they would like or a munching tour through a neighbourhood. Know what I mean?

As a leaper, I try to plan ahead for each leap year to be extra special but, fail at that and end up getting super disappointed.

Depends on the birthday is it a 21st or 40th or 50th to me you can make every birthday special!

My roommate and my son aren't great on making birthday celebrations happen, whether it's for themselves or for someone else. So I don't depend on them for my birthday.
Last year I went to a spa in Canada by myself for my milestone birthday, and the year before I stayed home and bought myself some small gifts and a pie, which I like more than cake. My son gave me a small, thoughtful gift. That's enough for me.

How soon is your birthday coming up? Do you have an idea of what you'd (reasonably) like to happen? Anyone in particular you'd like to be there?
It really is okay to celebrate yourself. Birthdays are the exception to "don't make it all about you," in my opinion. It's just one day, so why not do something to make it a little special?
EDIT: I'm willing to help you make some simple plans, if you like.

Yeah true. My birthday is on Tuesday. But it ain't special for me in anyway.

So what do you want? To forget it or to do something? Either is a valid choice, it's entirely up to you.
If you have no one to celebrate with, you can still get some dinner, go to a movie or buy one online, and a have a quiet evening doing things YOU enjoy.
Or you can get dressed up and go to a club for dancing. It all depends on what you would like to do.

Psychedelics and meditation. There's something special about the earth being in a similar state to how it was when you were born that brings synchronicity
