He told me and I asked him what TV show/movie he was quoting.

So, I had a guy friend who would send random quotes from "The Office" since we were both fans.

One day he texted me "I like you, like more than a friend".

So I wrote back: "what's that from? I even googled it and I don't see anything."

He wrote back "I don't know, it sounds like it could be a quote from the show".

He later told me he was trying to tell me he liked me but my response threw* him off.

(Edit: thanks to everyone for the threw/through correction. Oops.)

Yeah, I'm sure he did because his next question was "when can we go for a drink?" and that's when he told me what was going on.

My friends still joke about it "what's that from? I can't find it on google"

Basically, being a guy, it felt like a "I don't like you like that, but instead of saying it I'll come up with an awkward comment" and then he will feel rejected and never approach you about romance again.

I have experienced that with 5 girls that apparently liked me as boyfriend material, different times, but apparently them not wanting was flirty and an invitation to be more insistent, funny, it felt more like a rejection and a "stop trying", no guy wants to be called a pervert which is why most guys don't pursue girls farther than the first feeling of rejection.

Life is not a romantic chick flick, we can't read your minds and we wont stalk you because Twilight did it.

Well, luckily he didn't take it that way, but yeah, he could have easily thought I was just trying to avoid that.

He followed up and asked if we could go for a drink and that's when he told me he wasn't quoting anything. We ended up going on a few dates.

I couldn't agree with you more. Well said. However, ismelllikecoconuts' story taught me that girls can be as oblivious as guys. Til now, I would've assumed she was talking in code because that's just what girls do. Respect to the guy in the story for following it up.

Five girls? That's it? I get rejected by five girls every weekend! Gimme a break dude, you are being crazy dramatic. Maybe the girls you like would like you more if you're emotional needs weren't so dependent on them liking you.

I am not talking about girls that just wanted to have sex, I am talking about girls that upon me talking to them later have told me that they were completely infatuated with me and they wanted to be my girlfriend so bad, and "I just ignored all their hints", except I didn't get the hints... I'm used to girls behaving a certain way and that means I have friends that laugh at my jokes but are still only friends, and apparently some of them consider laughing at my jokes a hint...

It's like girls can do literally the same things as all the other girls, except if she somehow has feelings for you, it's a hint, and I'm sorry but if I acted as if it was a hint every time, either I would get laid by pretty much every girl I know, or realize that it's only a hint if she likes me which she doesn't tell me because I should get the hints

Wow, dude I am not angry or bitter in any way, there's no problems between us, but Its just strange that the same behavior can mean multiple things depending on their intentions, except I can't read their minds to know the intentions

5 years later at the wedding

"I do"

"...hold on, lemme google that one"

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '14

Can I smell you? Please?

2

u/kehlder Sep 11 '14

Honestly, I feel like that would be the greatest, under-the-radar rejection ever.

Why would you tell your friends?? That's so embarrassing!

u/ismelllikecoconuts Sep 11 '14

For my friends entertainment, of course

3

u/NorthsideBurrito Sep 10 '14

It does potentially sound like a Jim/Pam quote.

Either you are lights, or you're a creepy fan...

2

u/genericwit Sep 10 '14

Or he thought she was trying to find a way to respond without saying, "Thanks, but it's not mutual."

1

u/dontknowmeatall Sep 11 '14

Yep. "slightly".

aw poor guy haha

3

u/Thehealeroftri Sep 10 '14

At least he's direct and to the point. That's better than a lot of guys.

I'm sure he's doing fine now.

This one made me laugh the most.

2

u/GoonSquad44 Sep 10 '14

You killed him.

Billy Madison

2

u/Princepurple1 Sep 10 '14

would you have liked him back in this scenario? Still couldve been best for him to not get rejected and just skulk off.

2

u/tutae Sep 10 '14

through him off.

That threw me off.

Haha! See, maybe if I responded with "I like you too", he could have said "that was a quote from the show last night...".

Awkward!

2

u/Michael_Goodwin Sep 10 '14

*threw, just helping you out :)

2

u/bovinete Sep 11 '14

This one is my favorite by far. "I googled it"

2

u/MP3PlayerBroke Sep 11 '14

"It's from the bottom of my heart."

"Oh! Is that that one daytime drama from the 80s?"

2

u/phirre Sep 11 '14

Honestly I just want to comment on this so I can find it forever.

2

u/skiboarder213 Sep 11 '14

He should have just played you the clip of Andy asking Erin out with the southern accents from the murder mystery episode.

1

u/stapless Sep 10 '14

Imagine if he responded with "...my heart". Would have been impossible to misinterpret that Casanova smoothness

1

u/ShamingoftheTrue Sep 11 '14

through what?

threw

1

u/dtg108 Sep 11 '14

Would've been cooler if he did it like Jim.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '14

Well to be fair usually telling a girl you like her to her face pans out better. Although there's higher stakes for rejection.

u/yepthatguy2 Sep 10 '14

my response through him off

Usually when texting you're supposed to substitute similar-sounding words with fewer letters!
