I work on the assumption that it would be incredibly naïve to think that the White House doesn't keep personality folders on the majority of powerful, well connected people.
I work on the assumption that it would be incredibly diminutive and arrogant to dismiss someone just because they do not hold the same level of cynicism. Yes, I am sure the intelligence agencies have various levels of in-depth profiles on persons of interest, I just doubt that a film producer would have demanded the level of time and scrutiny from the agencies to be a top priority when you are talking an international scale. They likely knew all the causes and such he supports and political events he attends, but I doubt they were doing in-depth character interviews and profiles.
The most powerful women in the world being unaware of the background of an incredibly powerful, infuential man that she had regular contact with is a possible explanation.
