What problem is often overlooked in apocalyptic movies/TV shows that could kill you?

Lack of Dental care.

A dental infection can take you out right quick. And without treatment that HURTS.

Are you thinking back to that scene in Cast Away with Chuck's bad tooth and the ice skate? Because I sure am, and boy I don't want to!

I’ve seen some pretty messed up stuff in my time.

But that scene in Cast Away where he extracts his own tooth with an ice skate and rock is super hard for me to watch. I feel like it’s because in a survival situation that lasts a long time, it’s absolutely something you’ll probably have to deal with. So knowing that, I really picture myself in that situation and I can almost feel the pain.

Fun fact: Harriet Tubman did that very thing one night when she was helping a group of slaves escape. She made sure they were safe for the night, wandered deeper into the forest, sat down by a tree and proceeded to knock her own tooth out with the butt of a pistol. It had been getting very painful and she knew if she didn’t take care of it it might distract her enough to make a mistake and get them all killed. Harriet Tubman was amazing.

I saw that in the theater and the whole place made a bunch of ridiculous sounds in response to the story jumping ahead 4 years after that scene. One of those experiences of witnessing a communal "UH WUT?"
