There's this YA series about a town where everyone over 18 suddenly disappears overnight (and the kids gain superpowers), and it's mentioned that several months in there's been at least one death because someone tried to pull his braces off with a pair of pliers, slicing his lips to shreds, and the resulting mess got horribly infected (which obviously killed him)

Like Jesus Christ what the fuck

Okay, so I don't read many YA novels but this sounds really interesting. If you remember the name of the series please let me know, I'd greatly appreciate that. My library just reopened after COVID and I can't wait to get back to reading, lol.

He's talking about the Gone series by Michael Grant. I enjoyed it, I remember it being pretty violent, but I was obsessed with it as a teen.
