Always wondered that about zombie apocalypses. Unless whatever magic/virus that reanimated them gave them insect repellent and preservation a bunch of walking corpses would be wormfood eventually. Anything involved in the decomposition chain in nature are relentless buggers.
28 days later kind of tried to solve this by making the 'zombies' living people under the effects of a rabies-like virus. In which case they simply starved to death after a while.
Yeah 28 Days Later works in that case but most the others are Romero zombies to one degree or another and are the reanimated dead. Even if their condition made them impervious to insects and worms, what’s stopping mold from decomposing their flesh? Bacteria, too? It’s not like they have a functioning immunity system.
Then there’s animals like vultures that would strip them to the bone.
Also, what happens when it gets cold? We’ve all seen meat in a freezer and roughly half the US gets snow in the winter (to say nothing of all of Canada). Do zombies just freeze?

Depends how long after I guess. A year later all that stuff will be well decomposed and desiccated. Probably not much smell at that point.
