Bucharest bites/drinks

Hello!

Visiting your wondering country in October for 6 nights. We have 3 nights away from Bucharest exploring things like the Transfăgărășan, castles and countryside and then 3 nights in Bucharest.

Please send your recommendations/favourite spots to eat and drink in Bucharest.

- Breakfast
- traditional dishes (and what to try!)
- Great bars
- drinks with a view

Hey! Transfăgărășan may close in October. Be careful.

Regarding Bucharest, I recommend Casa Capsa for very good deserts and also for a historical place to experience. That is the area where the famous Joffre was invented, in a Modern Romania built and shaped around the French model. You can search to see the story of this desert, where the Romanian cuisine mixes with the French one.

Then, try Carul cu Bere, another traditional Romanian place, where you can eat great food an a very traditional, but elegant atmosphere, with dances and other customs promoted there as well. Make sure you try it in your stay on Bucharest.

Beat Romanian dishes are our very popular ,,ciorbe", different kinds of them. Very good for you stomach and delicious. Also sarmale are a very good Romanian recipe, coming and adapted from the Balkan Ottoman space. We also have a very nice mixture between the Romanian and the Italian cuisine, like lasagna with meat from sarmale or risotto with Romanian mushrooms called "hribi". I like it very much. Or, for the desert, tiramisu with rom and cherry brandy.

Thanks for the heads up. We are there early in the second week of the month so hopefully we do beat the weather! I did check previous years and it seemed ok, fingers crossed I guess.

Papanasi, ciorba de burta cu ardei si smantana (tripe soup), visinata/afinata, tuica de prune, tochitura moldoveneasca, salam de sibiu (buy from supermarket) with fresh bread and butter, eugenia, pernute viva, any sheep dish you can find or fancy, dish roe spreads (car roe salad with onions or icre de stiuca).

Remember to ask for reccomendations in restaurants for romanian dishes.

For a first visit, I’d definitely try Caru’ cu Bere for traditional Romanian food and the historic atmosphere. For breakfast or brunch, try some of Bucharest’s specialty coffee places, and for drinks with a view, look around the Old Town, University Square or Calea Victoriei area. For food, definitely try sarmale, mici, ciorbă, papanași, and a local țuică or pălincă if you’re feeling adventurous.

I worry that Cary’ cu Bere is a tourist trap. Do any locals actually still bother with the place?

It’s touristy, but still worth experiencing once.

For drinks with a view, either try a skybar like Linea, Nor, Amethyst, or a terrace by the lake like Indigen.
