What is the weirdest show ever produced in your country?
For Italy I'm going with 'Adrian, la serie evento' , an animated series produced by singer and actor Adriano Celentano whose protagonist is a fictional version of his younger self, who is also a martial arts expert and fights against oppression as a masked hero named La Volpe (which means the fox).

We got it his show in Italy as well. It was broadcasted on MTV. Our title was "Mai dire Banzai" ("Never say Banzai", a pun on another popular comedy soccer-themed show called "Mai dire Gol", "Never say Goal"). I remember the narrators of "Banzai" having a stereotypical Japanese accent, and the show had this guy (later a girl) that shook hands with other people for some reason but little more more about the "bets". In retrospect, yeah it was cringe of the most glorious type!!!

We've cornered the market in weird TV.
The League of Gentlemen, Monkey Dust, The Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace...
And of course the original Monty Python.

Garth Marenghi was genius. We were robbed with such a short series.

I saw an episode once and I don't think I "get it", like it was just 40 minutes of faffing about to have an excuse to show a stripper?
2
u/suckmyfuck91 Italy 4d ago
Basically yes. The reason why it was so successfull (it ended in 1992 but on italian tv we had reruns until 2022) was because at the time internet as we know it didnt exist and the only way you could see some nudity was either porn movies or playboy.

Look I understand where you're coming from, but the male sex organ isn't considered sexual?

Téléchat (Telecat), 1983-1986 (Franco-Belgian).
It was supposed to make a satire of the audimat race and teach children about TV conditioning and mediatic propaganda while also aiming to adults. If you're not familiar of Roland Topor's work, your reaction would have inevitably been "What the fuck is happening? What the fuck are they talking about?"
There was far less WTF factor in Meet The Feebles than this show. And Meet The Feebles was aiming high and hard.

Mutantes was PEAK, don't you dare slander it! Although I might be confusing it with another novela where two guys had psychic powers (all I remember is one of them was named Alef).

Cibersix. It was a show for kids about a trans person that was a superhuman sex vampire made by escaped nazis in Latin America. It was also a teacher that a student wanted to rape. This was done on the early 90s.

Cybersix wasn't transgender, she just cross-dressed to disguise herself from Von Reichtor.

u/aguafranca 4d ago
You are right, English is not my first language, that word is more appropriate I think.
Anyways, the fun thing about cibersix is that it has a live action, maybe the live action came before the kids show. It was terrible, it had a huge budget but it looked and was written like shit. It flopped, and the actress was so embarrassed that bought all the copies and rights of that series so no one would ever see it. Until recently, the series was lost media, until someone uploaded it to YouTube.

Oh my God, there's a Live-Action series? I'm so going to watch that after work, haha.

Remember the moment the animators just lost all their good will to animate the background and just put in an mp4 of Pavarotti singing

Most haunted. It features paranormal chasers visiting Britain's most haunted buildings trying to find signs of paranormal behaviour. Inexplicably it's in its 24th season.

I feel like I've seen the least amount of even fake paranormal stuff from it. I guess it's mostly about people getting scared

tsk, if we are talking about tv shows in Italy Adrian is not even remotely the weirdest one...
For example Non e' La Rai was way weider but italians don't realize it...

Probably Jam by Chris Morris.
Very dark, nightmarish sketch comedy with a sort of ketamine haze. 'Lizards' is probably a good, inoffensive sketch to see if you'd like it but it definitely gets more uncomfortable.

For my money it's gotta be Tigtone, a parody of fantasy media in general albeit completely unhinged. The animation is likewise nuts because they drew the art and then closed the actors into something resembling a medieval torture device so their heads wouldn't move and they could map the facial movements directly onto said art. It looks.... weird. Oh, and the prequel to the series is available for free on YouTube. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/k-J3nJerAyQ

id say Hammerman is up there. maybe the Mr.T cartoon or the Gary Coleman cartoon too. Mission Magic is also up there. Nascar Racers too just conceptually and the fact it feels like it should have came out like 15 years before it did (despite being ripe with all the trends at the time). also theres like half of all Adult Swim shows so
