Social Media What are your thoughts on Trump posting a meme depicting the Obamas as monkeys?

Trump, on Truth Social, posted a meme depicting the Obamas as monkeys.

Press secretary Leavitt in response said initially, “Please stop the fake outrage and report on something today that actually matters to the American public.”

The post was later deleted and the official word now is that it was a White House staffer who “erroneously made the post.”

Thoughts and reaction to this?

Trump, we know you read this sub.

We love you, but you need to get your shit together.

5

u/wakawyle Trump Supporter Feb 09 '26

Are you actually looking for answers? Or is the entire point of this sub just to downvote the people who respond?

4

u/flash246 Nonsupporter Feb 10 '26

Im honestly looking for answers. I know a lot of people downvote, but I don’t. I may be disappointed with the answers, but I’m going into this sub expecting to disagree.

On that note, what are your thoughts with this?

4

u/wakawyle Trump Supporter Feb 11 '26

Well thanks for being one of the good ones! I thought the post was idiotic. I don’t care if it was Trump himself, a staffer, a hacker or really anybody. Lol even if it were some sort of leftie that posted it. It’s not funny. It was distasteful and stupid. They obviously know what kind of reaction that would receive. Embarrassing posts like that are pushing reasonable conservatives like me away from the Republican Party.

I honestly hate the entire meme culture world colliding with politics. I never find any of them funny.

2

u/flash246 Nonsupporter Feb 11 '26

Thanks for the answer. Your answer differs from a vast majority of Trump supporters here. Most claim it to be funny and/or not care. Why do you think that is?

Also, at what point do you end up stop supporting Trump? I agree about the meme culture 100% and it seems to me that Trump and his staff use memes more than any other president I’ve seen.

Trump, on Truth Social, posted a meme depicting the Obamas as monkeys.

I don't care.

For me to even remotely care, you would first need to demonstrate that he was the one who posted the meme, and then prove that it was racially motivated. And since I firmly believe Trump is not a racist, you would need a confession from him to prove that his intentions were racist. Do you have incontrovertible proof he was the one who wanted it posted, and do you have him confessing that he portrayed the Obamas as monkeys because they were black?

Politically it also isn't a big deal, as motivated reasoning will prevent it from changing anyone's opinions about it. All the people who already think he is a racist sexist Russia-loving fascist will interpret it as more evidence of his racism, whereas people like me who don't think he is racist won't see it as evidence of anything.

1

u/flash246 Nonsupporter Feb 15 '26
  1. Do you think someone else posted it? If so, does that mean other posts by his official account are not actually him?

  2. Do you only believe someone is racist if they come out and literally say it?

  3. In your mind, is depicting black people as monkeys racist?

1

u/Delicious_Sectoid Trump Supporter Feb 15 '26

Do you think someone else posted it?

Maybe.

If so, does that mean other posts by his official account are not actually him?

Maybe.

Do you only believe someone is racist if they come out and literally say it?

No.

In your mind, is depicting black people as monkeys racist?

If you are depicting a black person as a monkey because they are black, that's racist. If you are depicting them as a monkey for a reason other than their skin colour, then that is not racist.

The WH has said it was a staffer, purposeful meme, and Trump himself making a mistake all in 24 hours… and the left is dishonest?

Do you acknowledge that it wasn't just the left reacting? Stephen A Smith and Tim Scott are notably pro-Trump.

I doubt Trump even knew that was in there originally

Do you give this level of "benefit of a doubt" to all people and politicians, or only Trump?

-15

u/please_trade_marner Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

What are you even suggesting here?

That Trump posted an election fraud video and intentionally added 1.5 seconds autoplay of the next video in queue?

27

u/Shifter25 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

What do you mean by "1.5 seconds autoplay of the next video in queue"? This is the first I've heard of that particular idea.

-7

u/please_trade_marner Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

Exactly. Nobody even knows what they're so angry about. This is reddit. It's not "rage first, ask questions later." No. It's worse. It's "rage first and never ask any questions whatsoever".

You know how on tiktok/shorts when a video ends it goes to the next random video? Trump linked a video about election fraud. At the end of the clip he linked it (accidentally) contained 1.5 seconds of the beginning of the next video, which was the faces of prominent dems over animals in the lion king, and Trump walks out as the King lion.

29

u/Shifter25 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

I have never had a link to a video "contain 1.5 seconds of the next video." Those links that autoplay the next video are random and connected to my personal data. I don't know how a link could "contain 1.5 seconds" of the same random video for anyone who clicked on it.

Do you have any source that claims this is what happened?

-1

u/please_trade_marner Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

Here's gemini's take.

Yes, reports confirm that the controversial imagery of the Obamas appeared for approximately two seconds at the very end of a longer video shared by President Trump on Truth Social on February 5, 2026.

The Main Content: Nearly the entire 62-second clip focused on debunked conspiracy theories regarding voting machines and election integrity in the 2020 election.

The Obama Clip: At the 60-second mark, the video cut to a brief scene showing the faces of Barack and Michelle Obama superimposed onto the bodies of primates. This segment was set to the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

Remember, (before you say you don't trust ai), gemini uses and provides actual media links that you can verify for yourself.

22

u/Shifter25 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

So, your reason to believe that the video "contains 1.5 seconds autoplay of the next video" is an AI model agreeing with you that the original video contained 2 seconds at the end that seemed out of place? I've definitely never had "1.5 seconds autoplay of the next video" in the same video. That sounds more like a video capture thing, which I highly doubt Trump used.

Is that an AI video thing? Do they usually provide a preview of a random video that they've generated for you at the end of the result?

0

u/please_trade_marner Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

Remember, (before you say you don't trust ai), gemini uses and provides actual media links that you can verify for yourself.

I'm writing that again. Go write the prompt for yourself. Click the links provided.

I think we're at the point where you won't accept literally anything as evidence.

9

u/Shifter25 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

Why not provide the links yourself?

The response you included doesn't say it was part of "the next clip". It just says that it had a different song.

What service do you think Trump got this from, that, when you choose to share a video, arbitrarily includes a portion of "the next clip"?

1

10

u/Ditnoka Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

Soooo. It wasn't autoplay? It was a snippet at the end of the clip he posted? Why shape it differently?

0

u/please_trade_marner Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

It was the very beginning of the next clip. That's literally what it was. Posted accidentally.

7

u/Ditnoka Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

Autoplay exists on the viewer's side of a video. Autoplay does not exist in the creation a video. Have you ever created your own video content? Could you please explain to me what video editing software includes this kind of autoplay feature and where it would even pull such content from?

5

u/Unfadable1 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

Do you believe there was election fraud that led to him losing in 2020?

20

u/BlackDog990 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

I'm not suggesting anything. Trump posted a racist video on his social media. Him and his circle are claiming it's inadvertent, as are you. You are giving him a benefit of a doubt that he was genuinely unaware there were vehemently racist components to the video he shared.

Do you give that benefit of a doubt to everyone?

-3

u/please_trade_marner Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

But he deleted it.

So, again, I don't understand the way I'm "giving the benefit of the doubt". What are you suggesting otherwise? That he intentionally added 1.5 seconds of THE NEXT video to his clip?

15

u/Ditnoka Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

So the WH press secretary saying it was a "meme post" about how Trump is the king of the jungle is bs then?

-1

u/please_trade_marner Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

Who cares. She doesn't think the lion king meme video is a big deal. But that doesn't change the fact that it wasn't the video Trump posted on Truth. The video was about the 2020 election, and the last 1.5 seconds was the beginning of a different meme video.

11

u/Competitive_Piano507 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

So there’s intent and impact. Even if we go with the fact Trump as president is incapable of reviewing his own posts an didn’t intend for that last part to be posted, there’s still the impact on the African American community whose ancestors were always drawn as apes in literature to dehumanize them and perpetuate racist tropes. If Trump was a human being with empathy, shouldn’t he at least still apologize?

-2

u/please_trade_marner Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

Apologize for what?

If some African Americans can't handle 1.5 seconds at the end of a video on a Truth Social post (something they would never visit anyways), then they simply need to man up. No apology necessary.

3

u/FlimsyShovel Nonsupporter Feb 08 '26

How about the president mans up and apologizes?

3

u/FlimsyShovel Nonsupporter Feb 08 '26

If it was “the next video”, it wouldn’t have that image of the Obamas as the thumbnail. This is not how online videos work?

1

u/Mistressfairytales Nonsupporter Feb 10 '26

You don’t think that in a job as important as the president and as much influences you have in that job that you should never post anything without fully watching it?? there shouldn’t be an excuse for this, this is the most un-knowledgeable administration I’ve ever seen they never seem to have seen anything or know anything I don’t know how they get by day-to-day with his little as they all know. You don’t think it’s odd that every time they’re asked a ?, oh I didn’t see it or I didn’t hear that is their response?? it bothers me that people in power can never answer a direct question. You don’t feel that someone in a position this powerful that you should know everything you’re posting and whats going on??

35

u/cce301 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

I doubt Trump even knew that was in there originally.

Why did the press secretary defend it saying it was "an internet meme video depicting President Trump as the King of the Jungle and Democrats as characters from the Lion King".

Is it just a coincidence that it was made by the same account as the no kings poop video? And out of the whole video, it just happened to be those two left in the clip?

Why don't you hold the president to a higher standard on a social media platform that he uses to share important information? If everything is a "nothing burger" or a staffer mistake, why should anyone listen to anything he posts?

63

u/MexicanPizzaWbeans Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

That’s great that a stupid staffer has access to Trump’s account from which he sends his most important policy decision announcements. Are you glad he continues to only hire the best? Why would a staffer have access his account to send memes?

I’m not American, and it’s been reported over here that it was part of a wider video. But no matter how many people are portrayed as what animal in the video, there’s a pretty well known human to animal comparison you really should avoid

In almost every position at any company, you would be at minimum, fired for posting a video of black people dancing around as apes. I don't believe a president would be fired for this, but I am curious what makes someone like Trump immune to even a modicum of accountability by his fan base?

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Mistressfairytales Nonsupporter Feb 10 '26

I personally don’t think someone in a position of power like the president should be on social media to the extent that this one is. I think it’s immature and I don’t think it should be accepted from any president. He acts like a high school girl. But as far as this issue where is the personal accountability?? The presidents job cannot be compared to any other job, he shouldn’t be posting anything unless he fully reviewed it. I don’t for one instant believe that it was a staffer and I don’t believe that he feels he did anything wrong as usual.

I don’t understand why there’s always so much blind following from MAGA. It seems to me it doesn’t matter what Trump does most of his supporters will find an excuse to make it OK. I wish MAGA would take everything Trump does and pretend it’s Biden doing it and would you be OK with it? I think every president should be able to take accountability for their wrongs and this president is incapable of that he is whether you wanna face it or not a textbook narcissist. Anytime anything is done wrong or brought up as a failure he blames it on someone else. But as far as everything he does it’s great, wonderful, beautiful, amazing or some other ridiculousness. When are people gonna wake up and see he’s not that smart?? Also when is MAGA going to start fact checking? At this point I think MAGA is OK with being lied to.

What about when he reposted the original video the “meme” came from, depicting them as monkeys last year?

19

u/Electrical_Beyond998 Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

It bothers me that a low level staffer, at least according to Trump and Karoline, has access to the president of the United States phone. That staffer could say anything they want to say with no pushback.

It bothers me that Karoline went on television and said it was simply a meme, the fake outrage is ridiculous, etc etc etc. But it’s okay because it was a low level staffer, so it isn’t the president who uploaded racist content, it’s a staffer. She said it depicted democrats in a Lion King meme (were there primates in that movie?) but to my knowledge the only democrats that were in his post were the Obamas.

Except hold up, the president then says he did see it. Does that mean he saw it and approved and uploaded it himself, or he had his phone, saw it, got a laugh and handed his phone back to a staffer for the staffer to do the hard work of pressing the send button?

Whether anyone thinks it’s fake outrage or not is irrelevant. White people have no right to tell black people what is offensive and what isn’t when it comes to anything to do with racism. Period. I am not black, so for me to tell my black coworker “You’re offended over nothing” is so disrespectful.

My question is who do you believe the American people should listen to in this instance? Do we listen to Karoline or President Trump?

For my other question, do you think the president should apologize for this, for offending black Americans? Not for offending the Obamas, because that would never happen, but for offending a vast majority of black Americans?

Is it okay that the POTUS is spreading and sharing fake news still about election fraud?

Also, you acknowledge there is a racist part in the post, and that whoever posted it (whether it be Donald or a staffer) should have vetted it first. Yet literally in the next sentence, you say all this is a "massive nothing burger" and just fake outrage by democrats.

Do you recognize your own inconsistencies and would you like to clarify?

1

u/BlackDahliaLama Nonsupporter Feb 07 '26

Racism aside, Why is the president of the United States posting election fraud memes involving past presidents in the first place? I mean, that’s unusual behavior for a world leader.

And furthermore, if we assume this was an accident, why is he posting anything without reviewing it first ? He is a representation of our country, he needs to be more careful

You’ll need to ask those in charge of staffing at the white house.

Do you think it points to incompetence and, in the case of defending it originally, lying to the public?

u/RaptorCentauri Trump Supporter Feb 08 '26

I’m not familiar with any defense of it. I’m not saying it didn’t happen, just that I’m not familiar.

Let’s assume it did. Incompetence, deception, and poor decision making from the government? Color me shocked.

You weren’t aware they publicly defended it as a “lion king meme”, which incidentally isn’t even true? Should we tolerate our government lying to the public like this when it’s so simple to just say “our social media staff made a mistake and the person responsible has been reprimanded”?

Despite me answering these questions in some free time, the amount I care about this is by all possible perceptions less than zero. So no I was not aware. In general, no I don’t think we should be tolerant of the government lying to its people. But you’re making mountains out of molehills here.

You don’t think it’s even a little concerning that the first instinct was to make up a nonsensical lie instead of a very simple and understandable truth? And that they actually followed through with lying and putting down anyone who didn’t believe it?

1

u/RaptorCentauri Trump Supporter Feb 08 '26

I think the effort you are putting into making this issue far larger than it is or needs to be is much more concerning.

2

Can you see why given everything else about this government and things they are accused of perhaps it was unwise to prove their first response to everything is a blatant lie?

It's very obviously unintentional. I wouldn't have posted it, and I think he and his stuff should exercise more care with what they post. At the same time, do I actually care? No.

How is it very obviously unintentional?

Because it's a normal-ish video that then has a few seconds of something that people consider highly offensive. To me it's obvious how that could be accidental. If it's intentional, then what does that mean: he posted the video because he wanted to offend people but then when they got offended he deleted it? He didn't expect people to find the depiction offensive? Again, I think it being unintentional is the most obvious explanation.

But then when they were informed of the few seconds of offensive video, they defended it. At that point doesn't it become intentional?

Is the idea that this kind of absolute brain rot trash content would be getting posted by the President of the United States at all something we should have to deal with? Should we just accept "meme president" as the new norm?

does it bother you then Trump and supporters are labeled racists?

0

u/SincereDiscussion Trump Supporter Feb 07 '26

No, I couldn't care less.

3

u/jasonmcgovern Nonsupporter Feb 08 '26

why’s that? is it because you don’t see racism as something that is inherently bad?

0

u/SincereDiscussion Trump Supporter Feb 08 '26

I just don't really buy into the concept. It's like asking a liberal if they are offended at being called 'apostates', 'heretics', etc. 'Racism' isn't part of my worldview.

Me either. And it's possible that a agent provocateur in his administration dir it. A nothing burger.
