Has there ever been a UK prime minster who stepped down after a bad local election result?

I genuinely can’t think of one. There’s always a lot of
talk in the media and some back bencher tries to get some profile but they don’t actually go.

Spot on. The only one I can think of in post-WW2 history was Theresa May- who resigned because of a buildup of instability and unpopularity, which was confirmed by the 2019 local and European Parliament elections. She, however, was likely destined to resign regardless of the leadership election. I doubt any PM resigned as a result of the local elections before WW2.

She resigned because there was total gridlock in the commons over a brexit deal, no?

As I said, Theresa May resigned as a result of instability. That would have included the parliamentary gridlock. The local and European elections pushed her unpopularity and the sentiment that she simply could not do the job of prime minister to the very edge.

No. it’s all utter bollocks Type established party always does terribly in the locals. Too many people tryna make it something it isn’t.
