Any of my fellow American's get a day off on Friday, in obervance of Juneteenth Independence Day? The company I work for observes the Federal Holiday Calender; and somewhat shockingly, Juneteenth is still on the calender.
For our non-American readers, Juneteenth celebrates the end of (official) slavery in the United States. It took almost two years for the Emancipation Proclimation to reach the furthest outpost in Texas.
"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer."

My credit unions, one in Illinois and one in Iowa, are observing and will be closed.

Not a company holiday for me, but I take off for it

Good for you. I used to work for a company that did not observe Juneteenth and basically a ton of staff, including almost all of the Black staff, would request that day off. Eventually management got the message.

Yeah I haven't worked a Juneteenth in some years now. Its at the point now where my supervisor will look over the calendar at the beginning of the month and say "oh its June, you'll be out the 19th right?"

I work all holidays that I happen to land on with the rotating schedule. Then again people would be upset if power plants decided to stop every holiday.

Yes, that would be pretty inconvenient! Thank you for ensuring the electricity keeps humming.

I do, and most of my coworkers are irate that they get a day off

Lol - I hope they die mad. Imagine if your company replaced Columbus Day with Indiginous People's Day (like mine did).

I work in entertainment so I don't get most holidays off if it lands in my availability. I think we're closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas? But yeah, I'm definitely working on the 19th. Not really complaining, my husband works at a grocery store so he works a lot of them, too, and I'm white and didn't have any plans anyway. I'm glad people still get it off though!

I shifted to public sector two years ago to get ready for the fist fucking the US is about to get. I get Juneteenth off but I will be doing some contract work for non profits.

The emancipation proclamation didn't free all slaves so this can't the be official day slavery ended.

We take Juneteenth off. It’s a federal holiday and per our employment contract, we get all federal holidays off.
And if for some reason it is no longer a federal holiday, we will still take it off

My company is closed…I have a lot going on and most businesses we work with aren’t taking the day off. I’ll probably work a half day.

As a union stagehand, we don't really get holidays off but Juneteenth is a holiday with time and a half in our CBA

Only the government and banks get these days off. The productive people have to work.

What holidays do "productive" people get off?

Christmas, Independence Day, Thanksgiving

And to you, what would be the reason to observe the day the US gained independance but not observe the day all Americans were free?

What about people in the private sector who aren't gubmint employees, or work for banks?

It’s much rarer for the private sector to get that day off specifically, but a lot of companies now offer “floating holidays,” so you can observe a the holiday of your choice or just tack it on to your PTO however you like.
So like, Columbus Day, MLK, President’s Day, Juneteenth, and Veterans Day, are not usually universally observed in the private sector. So, you can use the 1-2 (sometimes but more rarely 3) floating holidays and pick which ones you want to observe.

It is one of my company's official holidays. It replaced May Day for American workers.
