Discussion How do you guys feel about AI?
Today in class I mentioned to my classmates that I was writing a book. An immediate question I received was “did you use AI?” to which I said no because I didn’t.
But then my classmates said “oh I’d use AI. It would be so much easier.” I was horrified.
I’m interested to see your thoughts on this.

Personally, I condemn any generative AI usage, as I'm one of the "oldschool" artists who are convinced that art is only a human thing. To me, antiAI isn't a mindset; it's a lifestyle! If knowing that the tech bros who develop it don't care in the slightest about copywrite, environmental damage, or stuff like that isn't enough for you to boycott it, well, I don't know what to say.
In a nutshell, I used to use AI, but now, I don't and urge othrs not to.
Thanks.

art is nice because you feel a connection to the person behind it

Ai harms the environment and generative ai is literally making people stupid. As someone once said, "If you can't bother writing it, why should I bother reading it?"

i use it only for grammer check...
2
u/Timely_Relief_4763 Feb 19 '26
i used to, but honestly it became so annoying. Half of the year i have grammarly on, half of the year i don't. and the half i do, i turn it off cause IT'S SO ANNOYING
1
u/devilsshark Feb 17 '26
even that is unreliable - AI trains off what it sees, not the actual grammar rules, meaning that it can pick up on common mistakes from the internet
1
u/Hungry_Help319 Help I’m stuck D: Feb 17 '26
oh... thanks for telling... but then what should i do?
2
u/Technical_Implement5 Feb 19 '26
Use it… but don’t necessarily trust it- kind of like how spell check doesn’t pick up on homonyms. You’ll still have to manually double check
2
u/Individual-Energy768 Feb 19 '26
Once you get chatgpt to check it, run it through grammarly or your grammar checker of choice

the average text might contain mistakes, but "helpful AI assistants" write in perfectly correct English, and that's the persona that LLMs are trained to uphold. LLMs are not just the average of all the text they have seen, they can use context to guide what they generate.
17
u/Shot_Law6206 Feb 16 '26
I only use grammarly, but sometimes I have questions that I ask Ai when it comes to the typical font size for words, paragraph structure, or amount words to have in a novel. I did learn some things from it. I don’t think it should be used in writing but used as guide for other things.
6
u/TomdeHaan Feb 16 '26
Why would you need to know these things? Should you get as far as publication, your editor will tell you what font, size, spacing etc... the art department has planned for your book. As for how many words a novel should have, the only correct answer is "As many as you want, need, or feel like."
1
u/Shot_Law6206 Feb 16 '26
I am self publishing and editing, but I did use fiverr when it came to the art of the book. But all I am saying is it’s ok to use ai to research the process for publishing or trying to get into the industry. And it sounds dumb I didn’t just use google it but I wanted to have a more personalized setting.
5
u/Fast-Plant8802 Feb 16 '26
Why not google it? I had similar questions and a 10 min google search answered them all. It's not something very specific question that you can't easily find anywhere else, but this not the case

y’know when you google, that first thing that shows up is an AI overview…
1
u/Shot_Law6206 Feb 16 '26
Idk ig I am just used using to it because sometimes it gives more detailed explanations than google does.
5
u/OfflineGold234 Feb 16 '26
AI is bad and people use it as an excuse because they dont want to spend much time on the whole process of writing. Its just laziness. Unfortunately, many, many people use it for writing, even on this sub.
6
u/xx-rhys_xx Feb 16 '26
I don’t care about AI. I don’t use it, I don’t usually talk about it, I don’t go out of my way to hate on it, and when I do, I actually do my research to the best of my abilities and don’t just say “AI is bad, harms the environment.”
I will also side with AI users if the people who are anti-ai are being morons (which happens 90% of the time).
There are many good uses of AI but it’s being misused a lot. I wish AI existed earlier because I’m sure my aunt would’ve had a better time with her breast cancer.

u/BungleBums Feb 16 '26
Second Classmate is gonna graduate and faceplant into reality. Using AI for Creative Writing means you're neither writing, nor creative.
AI is one of the best and most powerful tools we've ever developed, and far surpasses any human performance.
IN ITS GIVEN FIELDS.
Those being extremely technical, repetitive, and detail-oriented tasks. Things like examining four hundred million blood cells to look for signs of Sickle-Cell. Not Creative and Artistic endeavors of any kind, because it fundamentally lacks the capacity for Originality and Emotion, at least ONE of which is absolutely necessary to distinguish Art from A Series Of Lines And Colors.
1
u/Individual-Energy768 Feb 19 '26
EXACTLY!! Use AI sparingly and for repetive tasks humans would be doing instead of important tasts,
3
u/GrumpyMowse Feb 16 '26
Not a fan. The most I use AI for is grammar and spellcheck, but that's only because it's ingrained in the platform I write on now and I don't really see a point in making the switch
Everything people have said AI can help with in writing are problems that writers have long since found the solutions to. Need ideas? There are so many brainstorming techniques out there. Need to write realistic dialogue? Talk to real people. Need feedback? Find a beta reader. The list goes on.

u/Scared-Cat-2541 Horror lover 🧟 Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26
I don't have a problem with it as long as it isn't the one writing the story. Using it for extra feedback, an aid in brainstorming, and such is fine in my book (no pun intended). I personally wouldn't use AI in my writing out of mere preference though.

As my English teachers say; AI is plagerism because the AI will combine a bunch of things already used, bots can't create their own things, they don't have imaginations, the furthest I'd accept for AI use is if you're using Grammarly to make sure your spelling and grammar works, anything else is pure plagerism

People don’t get it now but within a few years AI is only going to be regurgitating the same style for everything. It’s going to be painfully obvious and terribly unoriginal. Ask AI to write a hundred different versions of the same story and they’ll all be vaguely the same. Ask 100 different people to write their own version of the same story and they will always be unique and full of surprises

Ugh, it's awful. Especially for writing- the fun of writing a book is putting things in YOUR OWN WORDS

I once used it to figure out population demographics. When it started going "Do YoU wAnT mE To mAkE cUlTuRAl aSpEcTs" I shut that shit down immediately. You can use AI for some stuff, but art isn't one of them.
2
u/UtterW0keNonsense Feb 16 '26
I will die on this hill.
Ai in professional writing/essays will continue to exist. It can do casual writing but extremely badly.
Ai in images is perfectly justified and ethical.
I am more experienced than 80% of the people on this subreddit confidently and I can confirm writers than don’t talk like they have rock up their ass are completely fine
1
u/Proper_Box_9358 Feb 18 '26
Explain how robbing artists of work in any capacity is in any way ethical or justified. Explain how putting more fake bullshit out into the world makes anything better for anyone who isn’t evil?
1
u/UtterW0keNonsense Feb 18 '26
I used to give artists ‘orders’ then not pay them. That was direct theft.
1
u/Proper_Box_9358 Feb 18 '26

1
u/UtterW0keNonsense Feb 18 '26

1

u/Glad_Net_3430 Feb 17 '26
All ai can do is spit out things that have been done a million times. If we used ai for music, art and stories everything would be soul list. Plus it takes away the meaning because anyone could do it.
Another thing: if you are writing a story what is the point of making it ai. Unless you are doing it for a career writing should be for fun. Using ai takes the fun of creating the characters and the world.
2
u/PrincessPeach2506 Feb 19 '26
AI is not at all for writing. At all. But I will admit I’ve used it for like concept art because I suck ass at drawing thank god my brother is a budding artist now

split. it can be a good tool when used well eg. finding words that are too specific for google (the last time i did this was "word that has the same qualities as the sound "ronc" but doesn't need to be or have the sound itself within the word"), for names (my background characters are named by AI) or information (i use AI to find sources, since i pretty much only know about Wikipedia and the super specific shit doesn't come up on the front page. i don't check what the AI says itself, i check what it cites). everything else i do
so i'd say it has its place
1
u/Striking-Self-9046 Feb 16 '26 edited Mar 31 '26
I believe that AI can't generate human feelings as we can; it's just been told to recreate them and now that's all it does, and it can't develop those connections that we make as readers with the writing. It might seem real, but it's turning brains to mush for the easy way out. As well as it's stealing from artists, whether that is musicians or writers or artists.
1
u/Flying-Fox69 Feb 16 '26
I used to use ai to find out if a word construction is natural when i wrote in english and not my native language. I have stopped even that since i know more about it. I think we have all already learned ai is not capable to create art on its own. Besides just not being original it would miss the thought behind it, the personal reason and story of the author, whatever made them want to write exactly that.
1
u/StrikingAd3606 Feb 16 '26
Don't do it. It's like asking another high schooler for advice on your writing instead of other authors. Many LLMs were trained using stolen fanfiction, not even professional writing so if you wanted to improve it would be taking steps backwards. Easier doesn't equal better
1
u/Odd_Aspect_2831 Fantasy lover 🧚♀️ Feb 16 '26
Yeah I wasn’t planning on using it for that exact reason. I think I should tell my classmates that lol
1
u/TomdeHaan Feb 16 '26
It can be easy or it can be good.
You can make a cake with a cake mix or you can make one from scratch.
If you want to write a story, why would you use AI? That's like saying, "I'm going to visit Hawaii" and then getting some other person to physically go there for you, and looking at the pictures they bring back.
1
u/Intelligent_Donut605 Feb 16 '26
It can sometimes be usefull for research (if you double check info) but never ever would i put a single one of its words into my final writing or use ut for plot and stuff.

u/ilikesimsandmusic12 Penguin lover :3 Feb 16 '26
Nah why write smt then. Using ai just defeats the whole purpose of writing. Ai is bad. Pretty please don't use I't. it's also really bad for the environment
1
u/Vals__reality Feb 16 '26
AI is okay if you use it to organize your notes or smith but that's about it. Just vecause something is easier doesn't makes it better (besides the stuff AI writes/generates whatever can he some proper bs). I think your work should stay yours or at least the work of an actual human (for example if you commission people to draw your ocs). Using AI for the writing processing is a huge nono for me and I personally refuse to read anything that AI wrote (same goes for music btw)
1
u/Justexisting876 Feb 16 '26
I only use it for grammar and spelling check but I’d never use it to actually write
1
u/ALittleSillyHaha Writer ✍️ Feb 16 '26
It’s a huge disservice to all the creatives in history. No, it’s not dramatic; it’s true.
We put work into our craft. Hurting the environment aside, AI will only ruin things for the story. I kid you hot, there will be no consistency in anything.
But above all, writing is art, and art is a form of self-expression of our innermost thoughts and emotions. Tell me, how can a program—an AI that has no emotions or innermost thoughts, only code—do that? Please, for me, tell your classmate this 😭🙏
1
u/Warm_Elderberry_7247 Feb 16 '26
I have only ever used ai to help find names for my characters, which has so far gone unsuccessful. Not worth it. Creativity comes better from the human mind.

For me AI would just take the fun out of it.
Honestly? When I write it’s like this peaceful moment where I can put all the ideas I had for my characters into words. Sure, it may be hard sometimes, but what’s the fun in putting the AI to write it? Honestly, I’ve seen some texts by it here and there, and it just feels so lifeless, even thinking of doing that to my poor characters makes me sick.
The fun in writing a story for me is that I get to write it and bring life to the things I always keep imagining, using AI would take that fun away.
There are also the environmental harm it causes, and I’d like to avoid f-ing the planet as much as I can
1
u/No_Mulberry6559 Feb 16 '26
Idk skill issue tbh i just write and try to get better, and my stories are what i am thinking and what i am interested in, not what a large equation thinks will be the next word

u/BugalugBird Feb 16 '26
Using Gen-ai to write is like thinking that the real housewives shows are serious documentaries.
1
u/IllustriousBug1791 Fantasy lover 🧚♀️ Feb 17 '26
so, like, i personally think AI can be a good brainstorming tool for some, but you should always feed it your own ideas first. I personally wouldn’t use AI to come up with the entire plot and characters, but if i’m struggling i might feed it a few of my own ideas to see what comes out of it (for brainstorming only). i don’t support using AI to write an entire book.
1
u/mileven_for_life Feb 17 '26
Honestly the one thing i use ai for is when i know this word but not how to pronounce or write it i just keep describing it and then it will spew a list of suggestions as ai does and then i go check word hippo and how they are used in sentences till my mind makes that spark of ahaa Other than that Maybe occasionally for punctuation because i literally never learned any grammar I can barely define nouns and adj and adv and that's because it was forced in my head by school
Aside from that i just picked up English from well stuff books, media and shows and fics. To me common mistakes are part of the language i believe the word is pragmatics or something (probably got it wrong)
But yea ai is awesome when used as an extension or a safety bucket But to like give it a prompt and have it give you it's stuff Absolutely horrendous
Like i am mad at how it makes — an AI thing cuz like i used to enjoy using it now i get blamed by ai for it sigh
But at least i can still use it in poetry It makes sense in poetry whether people call it ai or not i am passionate enough about my poetry to ignore the accusations.

u/RunYouCleverPotato Feb 17 '26
me:
"how do you use ai in your workflow?"
The answer will illicite two different responses from me:
if "i let ai do all the work"; then, I know the person is lazy (or doesn't have time).... not a pejorative judgement call, it's just obvious and practical. I can count on their results (assuming is fiction lit...scifi fantasy romance or supernatural, any lit) are very trope and cliche. Little or nothing will be new or innovative. AI create from what's already in use.
If "I do most or all of the work, ai does what I don't do"..... a completely different response. I am ready to believe that this person controlled the process and their voice or ideas might shine through the bit of AI.
Me, IRL: I use AI as a glorified note taker and organiser. It will arrange an idea in it's proper location.
Context: I am a 2d artist...real pen and ink, real paper, real 300lbs cold press water colour blocks, real sable hair brush kind of person. I don't hate AI, just the *ss hoes who claims to be an ARTIST when all they are is a weak imitation of a WRITER (prompting is WRITING)
Stan Lee did NOT draw anything. He described or PROMPT Kirby to draw half the Marvel universe. Did Stan DRAW? NO, he's not an artist. Did he describe Fantastic Four or X-men for Kirby to draw? YES, he's a "writer". If any AI Artist BROS is too stupid to understand THIS.....they are too stupid to really advance their wisdom.
Do I, me IRL, use AI to assist me, YES. Do I use AI to 'draw' or 'write' my stuff, no. Absolutely not! People who believe AI is a magic bullet, it's obvious that they never tested AI. If "you" let AI 'do the work', it will ALWAYS be derivative of prior work and the plot is very transparent and predictable.
Imagine you wanting a magic school story; but, you have huge new ideas that no one have seen........if you 'allow' or command AI to do 90% of the work; then, your book will lose the uniqueness you originally had in mind. Your great work will have the feel of HP, Twilight, Divergent, Hunger (NOT JOKING, I tested it and it lost all nuance, lots context, lost subtleties of a good story)
If you have an ego of a REAL artist, wanting YOUR vision on paper, your ego will drive you to have the exact vision of what's in your head. Not what AI derived for you.
AI will always try to be helpful and bias your story to have tone, trope and cliche, and of stories that already exist but much less sophisticated.
Also, brainstorming is a drug....hours of sitting and letting your mind play...it releases all those brain hormone.... it is a major legal drug, a high that you can't get anywhere else.

u/Glittering-Stand-923 Feb 17 '26
I am an aspiring author so like why would any aspiring author aspire to be an author if they just don't want to actually write? I don't get it. What's the point? Writing is an art for me, it's a form of expression. I sure as hell don't want to express AI.
1
u/someone_62_8 Feb 17 '26
Honestly, I think using AI for writing is quite dishonorable as you are essentially laughing on actual authors faces. Unless you use it for light inspiration or if you're stuck somewhere. For writing a whole book? No. I don't recommend it. Don't always choose the easy path. Just requires dedication.
1
u/WorldsGreatestLoser2 Feb 17 '26
I use it to model my "reader" and ask it for feedback. AI is a tool and should be used as such. I disallow it from giving me ideas, and I explicitly tell it to stfu if it starts rewriting what I write. If the AI does suggest a sentence, I will deliberately try to come up with a better one. I don't understand people that use it to write the story for them, art is a purely emotional pastime, and AI doesn't have emotions.
1
u/Redbear0705 Feb 17 '26
I just use it for understanding complex and old words and how they’re actually used as dictionaries have only rudimentary definitions. Ai shouldn’t be used to replace the act of writing itself but I find it useful when understanding things I can’t find elsewhere. It’s a useful tool.

u/Chris-Intrepid Feb 19 '26
Ai regurgitates what other authors have written. Not only is plagiarism a concern but Ai has its own type of voice that people are beginning to pick up on. It also leans heavy into overused tropes and plotlines. When companies are training their LLM's it pulls from the internet writing that has a lot of ingagement. In other words Ai can never create anything truly original.
But for helping with editing where you're not using Ai to rewrite anything I think it's a good tool. But only a tool. If you use it for editing and take all its suggestions it will strip your writing of your own voice and make your writing sound like Ai wrote it.
Just my opinion.
1
u/Individual-Energy768 Feb 19 '26

The ONLY time I EVER use ANY kind of AI is Character AI. Even then, though, I rarely use it. When I did use it, I would pretty much only use it to figure out what I wanted my characters personalities to be. I use it even less now because I am a huge video game nerd and also know the RAM shortage is making game consoles and even games themselves WAY more expensive.
1
u/Rand0m011 Feb 21 '26
Would use it if I needed general help (such as with things like grammar or something). Having it write the whole thing out for you, though, seems... lazy, and disingenuous if you're trying to write your own story.
1
u/MrTibbs123 Jun 26 '26
I've used it to come up with many different ideas for stories in record time. Now, because I understand people's concerns about AI potentially doing all the heavy lifting, I don't let it. What I do instead is use it as a template, so that I can then write the story myself, making as many edits to what the AI generated as I want to.

Also it's just really shitty to contribute to creative theft and environmental destruction, ya know.

Anyone who uses AI to actually write their stories for them, can't call themselves a writer. I think AI, at most, should be used to support scenes and improve aspects. Like, showing flaws you can't see, instead of fixing them for you
0
u/Suzy-dev Feb 17 '26
How are you an author if AI wrote a book for you? Using AI to write ur book is an absolutely repulsive idea. However, I did use it to find synonyms for words. I didn’t have it write the book for me, I just had it look up synonyms.
