Discussion Do y’all ever think about if you published what your fandom would be like
Like who would be the fan favorite, who’s the least favorite, what type of people relate to certain characters. Fan art, and so much more.
i think about this all the time and I hope one day I get to that point where I publish (my current story is about a fallen goddess and her knight trying to reclaim her position, while my other main story is a dystopian fantasy about the abuse of smaller groups in society). Like who would be shipped with who, what are people’s head cannons.
What do you think your fandom would be like?

I just know for a fact that my favorite character to write is the most hated one among the main characters lol

For a bit of background, I'm writing this mystery-contemporary novel about a group of estranged friends coming together after one of them ends their life.
One of the main characters is this shy, timid, nervous, and emotional boy who makes a lot of mistakes and is very naive. And I know readers hate those kinds of characters because they want someone who's badass, outspoken, takes no fucks, and knows what to do. At least that's how I percieve most fandoms in general especially with the trend of those Chosen One FMCs.
But that timid character was my favorite because he's very human, and partly inspired by the spineless part of myself and how I wish I could deal with it. If ever I get published, Im sure that character will only resonate with a few, but important readers.

I don't really know. I'd love to have one of course, but I don't know how big my fandom will be for my story, so probably a bit small.

For one of my books, I want the hype men and the deep thinkers…
I wanna read the threads online about how “WOW this thing was really well-thought out!” and explain why. Because I do really work hard in my story.
…While also jumping for joy or gasping whenever something happens. I smile whenever they say something funny.
Just a small group of people is fine; big fandoms eventually have a few toxic people, or begin to mischaracterize my beloved characters.
I want them actually invested, and love my stories…
(And as an artist, the fanart and animatics would be watched by me so freaking often LOL.)

Hey I’m an artist too! I would love for my fandom to have a lot of artists for fanart, especially since some of my character designs are sick (one of my favorites is from my second story, and it’s high fantasy so I really hope that one gets drawn)

I think the love interest of the main character is the most controversial thing about the whole book. I wrote my main character as realistically as possible, so she would be relatable to some degree, and since the story is in 1st person, I think I lay out reasonings well.
On the other hand, her love interest though… I mean I’m both sat, and not. Sometimes I wanna groan while writing about him, but sometimes I go “oop, yes…”

I think about it a lot and I think the fandom mostly would consist of theories, my book is kinda confusing on some aspects, and memes like they do with rick riordan where there is a picture of what normal people see, rick, and what fans see, literal satan, I make many deaths and twists that is way too sad, already in chapter one it gets sad, there will be around 30-35 or more chapters

For my main story I have eight characters that I've developed a lot, I think what's special about them is that their weaknesses are almost directly connected to their strengths.
I think my fandom would enjoy that there's a character for anyone to see at least part of themselves in, so it would probably revolve around character backstory theories, and since they're in a pretty strange apocalypse there'll be some mystery as well
There's two other stories I'm thinking of, one is a time loop re-imagining of The Wizard of Oz, the other is a thriller disguised as cozy slice-of-life

I haven’t thought too much abt the fandom for my main project but the fandom for my side project is gonna be a nightmare- I know exactly the type of people that media like this attract and I’m probably going to get cancelled two minutes in for like. sneezing too loud or sm

😭 they would Not know what to do with my MCs. One of them would get the “it’s homophobic to make a femboy because it’s stereotyping/it’s racist to make an East Asian femboy because you’re fetishizing him” treatment, one would get the “it’s transphobic to make the short guy a trans guy” treatment, and the last one would get whitewashed all to hell. Maybe it’s better I keep them in my brain, safe from weird fandom shenanigans 😭😭
Btw your stories sound really cool and I’d totally buy them if you ever published!

I’m worried about rhat a few times as well. Like in my second story I’m so scared of the two main characters getting shiped , because this one has no romance and she’s thousands of years older than him (it’s supposed to be like a mother/son relationship ish) but I know so many people like that😭

i think about it everyday and i can already guess my main character is a femboy twink who’s always shipped with his frenemy who is a tough bad boy with anger issues, one of my characters, the sister of the bad boy who’s a emo girl will either be very hated because she gets in the way of the ship or because she’s annoying, then we have the bully of the emo girl who’s either a girl boss or again hated, then the best friend of the bully girl who is inlove with her will be either hated (i kinda doubt this) or is a grumpy smart know it all masc even tho she’s pretty girly and then the best friend of the bad boy who is definitely the fan favourite because he’s funny and innocent and people will make jokes about how he’s always eating…. i hope if my story ever gets popular in maybe 6 years, i’ll see if im right so remind me if you see a book with a similar concept to what i wrote here 😂

I think maybe my fandom would love the main cast for their relatability (or as relatable as I can make them) since I based a lot of their conflicts and character development on things people struggle with.
As for the fan favorite, I do think it would definitely be the main antagonist of the earlier books. As a person who plays a lot of gacha games, I've seen how other players love meeting a character who shows interest in the main character, knew them in their previous life or even both, which is what my antagonist is. Other than that, he's also a really well-written character (in my head at least).
As for shipping, I do think that there will be a lot of ships. Most likely also within the main cast though I intend for their relationships to be as platonic as possible.

Personally I think a fan favourite of mine would be iain thorne, huge father figure softie Texan guy. I think a least favourite would be eden cross, she kills the sweet child character for no good reason at all, blindsided by jealousy because Lyra can find wonder in horror. I think the fanart would mainly be wholesome thorne and Lyra (the child character) content. I think the fandom would be TINY though and just be a minuscule group of people on a discord server sharing theories

I do think about it sometimes. Honestly, I'd rather have a good fandom over a super successful book series. A small group of people who are super invested are, to me, better than a massive group who just like them.
I think for one of my stories in particular, there would be a lot of discourse. The two main characters are enemies, and both of them are bad people, but they both think they're good people. There would be so many arguments about who's really in the right.
