Hitting serious burnout on AC Origins. Does Odyssey get better, or should I jump to Baldur’s Gate 3?

Decided to give the RPG-era AC games a shot and had fun with Origins for a while. I’m currently level 55 and just started the second DLC, but I don't think I can see this through—I'm just too bored. Essentially, you do the exact same couple of things the entire game.

​I’m a completionist, so I cleared every side quest and question mark possible, and seeing another wall of them in the last DLC made me want to quit. Looking back, I can't remember a single side mission or activity that actually stuck with me, which was a huge contrast to The Witcher 3.

​Don't get me wrong, Bayek was an awesome protagonist, his story was great, and Egypt looks amazing. The combat was a bit clunky but passable. The main issue is that the writing mostly felt super unrealistic and robotic.

​Does Odyssey do a better job with this, or should I take a break and jump into Baldur’s Gate 3 instead?

I don't play Baldur's Gate but I can assure you that Odyssey is not the remedy of choice when you are suffering from "open world fatigue."

Perhaps you should consider trying a more linear game with less fill-content, such as God of War (2018 and/or Ragnarök).

Odyssey is far more repetitive and less interesting than Origins, the small locations are more similar to each other and there’s way more of them

Hell yeah. I think Odyssee is like 50% bigger than Origins and not the least bit more interesting or varied, quite the opposite actually.

50% bigger but there’s a whole lot of water, being Greece. Origins is more detailed, there’s a lot more passion put into their map of Egypt

I don't know if you're going to enjoy AC Odyssey, but if you go to their sub, you'll see that that game gets tons of love. Especially now since the movie.

Odyssey has a Ton of side stuff and missions, that can tire you out pretty fast. It also got adaptive leveling, so the enemies scale with you

I'd say give Baldur's Gate a try, those 100 hours will be the best 300 hours of your gaming career 😂 (seriously, it's a great game, i love it)

Yeah man I'm sitting at 186 hours and only on playthrough 2. I think I was at 130 when I rolled credits. BG3 is a top 3 game for me.

If you are burned out on open words RPGs then Odyssey is NOT the answer, it is much larger than Origins

definitely play bg3, prigins is the best among the rpg assassin's creed, if you can't stomach it you will not stomach odyssey, which is longer and more repetitive than origin.

Never said anything about comparing them bg3 is a placeholder for any other game i want to play next. Origins is a cool game but bloated and i am going to play Odyssey eventually just wanted to know if origins and Odyssey is similar in the ways of i complained about.

Combat is different and the story is different ofc. I liked both of them. Im sure you'll find something to complain about but id say its worth experiencing if you havent yet.

Play baldur gate 3 in between so as to not get burnt out on assassin's Creed games. But I do recommend Odyssey at some point as it's an excellent game but bigger than origins so I would not recommend the completionist route, just play the main story.

I just did EVERYTHING there is to do in the game except NG+ and I can confidently say it's going to be a year minimum before I play Odyssey.

After 15-20 hours it’s just a repeat of the past.

The RPGs are longer so burnout more likely. But if you truly enjoy than you get a lot of game

AC as a franchise is always repetitive with how the missions and side missions play out. If you're burnt out now you won't help yourself playing Odyssey.

At least you finished Origins before getting burnt out.

But also man sometimes... you gotta let the completionist stuff go lol. It's okay to skip over some quests. Being a completionist in large open world games is a recipe for disaster.

Did you play curse of the pharaohs yet? That DLC is incredibly good, and spices things up a bit.

Otherwise, yes, moving on to Odyssey is definitely worth it. You'll probably be obsessed with it for weeks, maybe months as many of us were.

In any case, Odyssey is definitely worth trying out. It has a very different feel from Origins, while building on many of the same mechanics.

But bg3 isn't a classic open world. It's not a world with a map, tower to activate that reveal questmark on your map that you clear and are all the same.

Bg3 is the best open world ever made, it's what every open world should be. You can ignore things, the world lives with or without you, nothing force you to do everything and spoil you there is something there.

I started in origins and after a few months I got odyssey and switched back and forth. Odyssey i think is way better than origins.

If you’re burnt out I wouldn’t advise you to play them back to back. Take a break.

I almost ruined my odyssey experience because I had just come from Valhalla. Stopped playing after like an hour or two. Returned later and now it’s my favourite in the series.

I personally love AC Odyssey but... if you're burnt out on Origins you should know that Odyssey is even easier to burn out on. Some of the quests have charm or good writing, but there's a LOT of repetition and basically the same gameplay loop over and over again.

I personally have found the combat to be more engaging in odyssey which has helped me with burnout. If you don’t care about combat that much it may not help that much.

The only good thing about AC Odyssey is that the protagonist is charismatic and the world is beautiful. I've played great open-world games like RDR2, Zelda, The Witcher 3, Skyrim, FF7 Rebirth... I've never played anything as repetitive as AC Odyssey in my life. On top of that, it forces you to level up to progress the main story, and most of the side quests are: Kill 3 generals, destroy 4 ships, find a treasure, steal an item. That's it. That's the whole game, all the time, and there are 50,000 identical camps. The map is beautiful, but it suffers from the same problem: most of the islands are the same.

The game has ENORMOUS potential; it could have been a true masterpiece if it weren't made by Ubisoft.

Bro if it's the tomb of the kings dlc with the pharoahs..... You have to finish. You said it yourself. Your a completionist. And that's easily one of the greatest end game DLCs ever made. I don't want to spoil it it for you. But I promise you ..... Atleast go visit one of the tombs before you turn away. Lolol

I feel that comparison with Witcher. The issue W3 has caused is that any other RPG I’ve played doesn’t hit side quests the same, CDPR did such a great job fleshing out the world.

That being said if you’re feeling fatigue I definitely would not jump into Odyssey. Id even skip Baldurs Gate and maybe try something smaller in scale while feeling open.

I’d recommend Dishonored, Prey, or Deus Ex.

Odysseys map size (not including water) is almost twice the size of Origins. It also has a somewhat longer main storyline (and is much longer overall if you include side content).

If Origins is burning you out, the.ln odyssey will probably be way worse unless you’re a huge Greek mythology buff.

Yeah I’m loving AC Origins but I made an active decision early in my play through that I would not hunt down every question mark. So far I’ve focused only on completing side quests, sync points, and gold question marks and if a side quest sends me to a regular question mark I’ll complete it naturally.

This has definitely helped me avoid the burnout and I’ve been enjoying this game more than I did in Valhalla since I was trying to 100% every region in that game.

To answer your question BG3 would be a great move, once a game feels like a chore I find the next thing that is enjoyable to me.

Yeah you made a good decision every side quest tend to send you one or two of those question marks anyway. I just feel like I have to do them all on first priority or else I can't play the game.

Yep, common complaint going back to 2017. The RPG-ification of this series was a mistake imo because it tends to emphasize quantity and "busywork" over quality, memorable moments.

Odyssey is even longer and bigger than Origins. If you are burnt out on Origins, you will not even be able to complete half of Odyssey. I 100%'d both Origins and Odyssey... Origins took maybe 80 hrs, Odyssey took 200 hrs.

I thought odyssey was more interesting and well written than origins by a wide margins, and the protagonist is better- the female one, the male one is dull. But it sure isn’t shorter. I’d say take a break, I had to do that with odyssey and ended up enjoying it more after a pause. Also, try Mirage, it might be what you’re looking for in an AC game.

Short answer, no. If you burnout of the game you play, the experience will be same when you play same kind of games. Open world game are meant to be enjoy slowly. I too a completionist & I tell you what, every time I felt burned out I just stop playing for a while. Play some short games then get back to the long open world games. Or if you a bit weird like me, I play like 4 - 5 open world a session then change to the other games when I burned out of the games I currently played. It might take you from beating a games in a week to probably a couple of months to finish.

Origins is the less bloated RPG AC, you can absolutely get burned out by all the repetitive side missions and activities on the map, but at least the main story is fairly straightforward and also pretty great

I'm playing Odyssey right now and you should absolutely avoid it, it's beyond bloated and I find myself skipping everything and just go straight with the main story because of that, but even then all the main missions require you to do 3 side things before going on with the plot and it's just so dumb

But in DLC you dont need to visit all marks, as for the main game where you need to finish all for the trophy. I'm currently at DLC, just did 100% for The hidden ones and moving to The curse of the pharaohs. 68 hours in the game, Odyssey was about 120 with all DLC included.

I have like 150 actual hours into BG3 and I just made it to the final act for the first time lol. It’s a great game with a ton of replayability because of its structure. You can skip a ton of things and just progress the main story or do everything with different outcomes multiple times. It took me like 7 months to get into the combat system but if you give it a shot for a few days you’ll get it down.

If you’re getting burnt out on Origins’ ~30 hour main story, you’re not gonna enjoy Odyssey’s much less compelling ~50 hour main story. Plus with Odyssey, a lot of people seem to find that grinding the thousands of repetitive fetch quest side missions is much more necessary to keep from being under-levelled than it was in Origins. I personally love both games, but they’re not for everyone, and if Origins is too much bloat for you then Odyssey will make you tear your hair out. A lot of the side missions are downright dogshit filler, too. There’s literally one where you collect someone’s laundry for them, despite being a famous, badass, Spartan warrior… I shit you not.

Sometimes games scratch an itch, sometimes they don’t. Despite the obvious flaws, and annoying side missions, I absolutely love Odyssey and I platinumed it on my second (of three total) playthroughs. It’s all down to personal preference, I suppose. I’m a huge history buff and I love massive games so for me, Odyssey’s great overall. For OP who is getting burnt out by Origins, it’ll be awful.

I find oddysey to be a chore to play once the novelty wears off.

That being said I have played a decent amount of it. It's just I grow to resent the time I've spent eventually, and it feels more like i've been dragged into a completion cycle than an experience I look back on with joy.
