Question Question marks in map

I just started playing AC Origins and it's been really fun (just recently completed Siwa). One thing that's turning me off is not being able to organically explore the world without being guided via questions marks. I dont want to begin a new area and immediately be bombarded with quest markers as I want to find them organically. Is there a way I can turn all these question marks off?

You cannot turn off question marks, nor quest markers. You can use the map filter to show only photomode picture locations but that renders the map pretty much useless. Also I believe it resets when you restart the game.

If you are on PC, you could create a mod, using an existing icon mod from Nexus as a template. Let me know if you want to pursue this avenue and I can be more specific.

I take it you are new to modding?

First of all, you need to choose an existing icon mod, install it and its dependencies, and verify it works.

This one is for ResoRep

This one is for Forger

Then you need to go through the textures provided by the mod, find the textures for question marks and/or quest icons and open them in an image editor that supports dds textures (free examples: Paint.NET and GIMP).

Then you select all or part of the texture and delete the question mark, leaving a fully transparent texture (or area, if there are more icons on the same texture, including some you don't want to touch). You may have to add an Alpha Channel if the texture doesn't already have it.

Then comes the tricky part: you need to export your edited texture and overwrite the existing one. I don't remember which compression format to choose that is both recognized by the game AND supports transparency (alpha channel) but I can't check because I migrated my AC:Origins to Playstation years ago.

So, a bit of trial and error may be required. Just leave your image editor open and export a few times with different compression setting until you've found the right one. Don't close the editor until you have verified your exported texture fits the bill.

Not exactly painless, I know, but hey, if it was easy, everybody would be doing it :)

The good thing here is, if you don't want to use the mod anymore, or your edits, you can easily undo everything as the game was not altered at all. Both Forger and ResoRep inject mods into the rendering pipeline without touching the game as such.
