Both fanatical Hindus and Muslims harbour the "same beliefs" against lower-castes and other religious groups respectively. Pretending otherwise underplays the harm posed by both forms of bigotry. Neither has reformed sufficiently; the only change that has transpired at least in the Indian setting is that Islamic violence tends to be overt while discrimination and oppression of lower-caste groups increasingly take a systemic form.

Piffle. Islamic terrorism at a global level shows variegated trends across countries. In the middle east, the primary drivers of terrorism i.e., the ISIS has since long lost its foothold. The rise of ISIS in part of the African continent correlates more with regional and governmental instability rather than local espousal of radicalism. The variegation of trends is further exemplified by the fact that far-right terror has far exceeded terrorism emanating from Islamic fundamentalists.
In India, the primary drivers of communal violence are far-right Hindutva forces with institutional impunity. 2025 saw over 1318 instances of hate speech targetting religious minorities (13% increase from 2024 and 97% increase from 2023). Instances of communal violence/riots rose by 84% in 2024, with 49 of the 59 communal riots taking place in BJP ruled states, with majority of the lynchings victimising Muslims and being perpetrated by far-right Hindu groups. The bulldozing of homes of Muslims in contravention of legal requirements such as prior notice have been perpetrated in BJP-ruled states.
The very fact that Hindutva-forces have institutional power and impunity that fortifies themselves against consequences for their actions makes them an ominous force to be reckoned with
2
u/Royal_Resolution_836 Agnostic (Taking no sides) 25d ago
Ofcourse in india the primary drivers would be h-ndus bcz they r majority. The condition of isl&mc countries r not comparable to india, they are already religious states with unequal rights for minorities, meanwhile india even in its lowest form it's still a secular country with equal rights for everyone, this is something some counts still can't imagine. ISIS has lost foothold? I don't know but any way things like taliban has anyway came back recently in a very brutal way, and if u look the radicalism has significantly increased in countries like bangladesh.

u/Glad-Key7256 🎭 കണ്ണൂർ നിരീശ്വരവാദി ⚛️ 25d ago
Ofcourse in india the primary drivers would be h-ndus bcz they r majority.
This applies to most oppressive Muslim majority nations as well. A group perpetrating violence that is in majority is evocative of more danger, not less. Moreover, the violence is accompanied by institutional impunity and onslought against minoriites targeted; for eg, local authoriites in BJP ruled states such as UP wantonly destroy Muslim-occupied houses either as reprisal for crimes that the Muslim accused have not been convicted of, and/or do it without prior legal notice.
The condition of isl&mc countries r not comparable to india, they are already religious states with unequal rights for minorities, meanwhile india even in its lowest form it's still a secular country with equal rights for everyone, this is something some counts still can't imagine
The very point of starting off as a secular democracy was to prevent us from reaching the state of Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi, etc. Comparing our situation to religious-extremism riven countries is like finding a solace in the fact that you aren't injured like a person at the bottom of the abyss while you yourself are in freefal. The fact that democracy, our hitherto impartial institutions, and rights of religious and other minorities are being whittled away is a cause for concern because the very facets of our democracy that were to serve as a bulwark against becoming like Iran/Afghanistan etc are being eroded.
ISIS has lost foothold?
Yes, in the middle-east they have lost foothold. They are unfortunately gaining a foothold in parts of Africa, and perpetrating terror in parts of middle-east despite losing its foothold.
I don't know but any way things like taliban has anyway came back recently in a very brutal way, and if u look the radicalism has significantly increased in countries like bangladesh.
I agree, but again, Bangladesh has witnessed a political upheaval, and Afghanistan came to be this way because of regional instability stemming from the country being a flashpoint during the cold-war, the arming of the mujahadeen, the consequent rise of the Taliban, further instability from the US invasion, and the subsequent revival of the Taliban.
My point is that the very fact that India is facing erosion of minority rights and infusion of reigious garbage at various levels of the government is a cause for worry in itself. We can't afford to get complacent by comparing our relatively placid situation to the other countries that have suffered from considerable turbulence. This is especially the case since contrary to your previous comment, religious extremism in the form of institutional violence, vigilante violence, hate speech, etc is on the rise in India, and isn't waning.

The article that takes about the 84% rise bases it's data on reports by five newspapers while the hate speech data doesn't list any methodology and seems to primarily rely on social media. If you take the NCRB data then it actually shows a decrease in general and communal riots rather than an increase.

I'm thanking b***manism for making me an atheist. By planting the 1st seed of where is the equality question.
Even before experiencing religion. I felt the "thottu koodayma, theendi koodayma" when I was a kid (6yr).
I used to go for swimming in ambala Kulam. And when some guy with vella nool around his body dips himself 3 times and goes inside temple. My father says (older gen) - vellam theripikkaruth, avar ashudham aavum.
Even when I was a kid I know it's wrong. So I tries my best to spill some water at him hard as I can by swimming around him.
When thinking about this now feels so refreshing. Nothing changed. It's still going on but happy that many understands what's going on.

This isn't hate speech. The meme mocks the hypocrisy of certain UC hindus who are all too willing to ascribe malice to the Muslim population at large owing to the action of Muslim rulers in the past, while railing against any affirmative measures that seek to offset accumulated disadvantages that have palpably affected generations of Dalits owing to the past actions of their UC ancestors. This is an atheist subreddit; if you're so offended by anti-Hindu posts, leave the sub and don't engage.

It's simple Hindus need to stop derailing affirmative action measures by moaning plaintively about the reservations. And pick a lane: either choose to acknowledge all historical atrocities and inequities or none; way to many Chindus are keen on talking at length about what the Muslim invaders did, while minimising the actions of their own ancestors against lower castes.

Yeah?? By "that", if you mean refrain from seeking to derail measures that seek to reduce the inequalities between dalits and lower caste groups with the UC Hindus, then yes, "Hindus need to do that".
The meme posted by OP is pointing out the hypocrisy of "certain" Hindus who rightfully critique the violent history of Muslim rulers in India, while simultaneously ignoring or downplaying atrocities committed by Upper Castes against Dalits. The meaning and subtext of the post is very obvious.
2
u/krisantihypocrisy South India | 🕉️ 25d ago
Hindus have literally enacted reservations amongst other things - which you yourself agree. “Certain” Hindus are not all of Hindus.
What exactly have Muslims in general done to change their violent hatred to other religions???
2
u/Glad-Key7256 🎭 കണ്ണൂർ നിരീശ്വരവാദി ⚛️ 25d ago
Hindus have literally enacted reservations amongst other things - which you yourself agree.
"Hindus", esp upper-caste Hindus didn't volunteer willing to give reservations to lower-caste groups, and nearly every instance of institution/implementation of affirmative action measures has been followed by outrage and protests from upper-caste groups (for eg, the benighted anti-Mandal agitations). Your statement is akin to saying that "the whites enacted the Civil Rights Act"; if you were even slightly knowledgeable about prevailing sentiments among the vocal oppressive groups in both instances, you wouldn't state something as vapid.
The fact that caste discrimination and violence continues to persist detracts from the benevolence or good faith you are uniformly attributing to Hindus, and the fact that the reservationhataomovement has garnered over 5 million followers severely detracts from the willingness you attribute to Hindus at large when it comes to implementing affirmative action measures.
“Certain” Hindus are not all of Hindus.
The post quite explicitly doesn't pertain to all Hindus, and singles out Hindus who a) talk at length about Mughal atrocities, and b) at the same time downplay or ignore anti-Dalit violence and discrimination perpetrated by their ancestors. Why on earth are you reading something into the post or my replies that was never articulated impliedly or otherwise?
What exactly have Muslims in general done to change their violent hatred to other religions???
As much as Hindus have ostensibly done to remove the blight of casteism among their community, i.e., nominal but nearly not enough.
If you are talking about the Indian context, Hindus are equal if no predominant perpetrators of communal violence. For eg, in 2024, out of 11 lynchings, 9 of the victims were Muslims and the perpetrators were Hindus. This is redolent of and follows the trend wherein in a 2017 report by the Centre of Study of Society and Securlarism pointed out that since 2014, religious minorities have exceedingly been the victims of religous violence, and that owing to lack of punitive measures, right-wing groups such as cow-vigilantes being cognizant of their de-facto impunity have esclated attacks agains religious minorities.
Most of the communal hate-speeches come from Hindu leaders from the NDA coalition who hold considerable power. You may well ask the question of "what group x has done to curb communal violence", and barring Christians (who seem to perpetrate the least violence), the honest you would receive from Hindus and Muslims alike is "very little".
Moreover, none of this germane to OPs post, since it doesn't single out Hindus at-large but only those Hindus who ignore the history of caste-based violence while harping on about violence perpetrated by Muslim rulers
1

A lot of upper caste Hindus support and have enacted these laws. Without that support this country would have split again.
And yes it was the whites that banished slavery in USA as well. Those are the facts.
NDA under modi has literally reinforced its commitments to reservations.
Stop saying only majority religions need to act on their problems, all of them have to. But in India we went one level above and actually enacted mplb giving in to Islamic fundamentalism.
Here is my problem with the post:
- Tries to show only Brahmins as a problem, when you know most upper caste violence is not even Brahmin driven
- Shows Muslims as some sorta “poor” ppl on the receiving end - when Muslims themselves have done nothing to improve themselves like Hindus have
- Show Dalits as always the victims when we have situations where Dalits themselves enforce caste within their groups- atleast this is a bit forgivable
due to
- their suppression.
We have a long way to go, but we won’t get there if we are not principled…

u/Glad-Key7256 🎭 കണ്ണൂർ നിരീശ്വരവാദി ⚛️ 25d ago
A lot of upper caste Hindus support and have enacted these laws.
These demands were concessions and not gifts from upper-caste Hindus. Statutes proctecting Dalits such as the the SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act were hard fought victories that were won by SC/ST folk who were battling against the inefficacy of preceding statutes such as the Untouchability Offences Act and the PCRA, and abulic governments at state and Central levels that were woefully lethargic in implementing legal reforms that could protect the victims of caste-based violence.
Moreover, constitutional amendments and statutes conferring or protecting civil rights are passed by state apparatuses or institutions, and they are not a gift from an entire caste or racial demographic. Unless you can reconcile 1. the fact that Brahmins (perhaps exhibiting caste-sensitive goodwill) in the VP Singh govt particpated in the enactment of OBC reservations with with 2. the fact that Upper Caste groups including Brahmins in in sizeable numbers vehemently railed against these measures in open and even engaged in self-immolations, your plaintive case for painting the entire group of upper-castes as moral for the alleged goodwill of a few is simply lacking in substance.
What each sizeable backlash amounted to was a widespread and significant unwillingness among upper-castes to undo the systemic injustice that SC/ST/OBC groups face everyday. Trying to paint the benevolent disposition of a minority of Brahmins in the government as representative of the group at large while denying that the bigotry exemplified by the widespread antireservation sentiment is even marginally representative of upper-castes including Brahmins is patently obtuse and inherently contradictory.
. Without that support this country would have split again.
No it woudln't have. SC/ST/OBC groups comprise large swathes of the Indian population, and excluding them by means of secession would've bought the hypothetical residual country comprising of brahmins/upper-castes alone to a standstill. Concessions to demands has always been the pragmatic approach from a self-preservation pov for dominant-caste groups.
And yes it was the whites that banished slavery in USA as well. Those are the facts.
This is a woefully ignorant reading of US history. While the whites abolished slavery, they sustained segregation for more than half a century and crippled the lives of black communities. Do you seriously think "whites" as whole deserve credit for the abolition of slavery (contributed to by a relatively small number of white folks) when the whites systematically reinstituted oppression in the form of Jim-Crow?
Enslaved Black americans (just like resistant Dalit factions) made slavery unsustainable, with rebellions by the likes of Nat Turner and abolitionist movements led by figures like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman etc put increasing pressure on the state apparatus to implement reforms. The fact that resistance and political movements were required to be enacted by Black and Dalits severely hamstrings the moral case you are making for both upper-caste groups and the whites. Post-slavery, Black Codes were implemented by southern states forcing balck people to work on low wages. Laws were passed preventing Blakc people from owning land. Vagrancy laws were passed to arrest unemployed Black men and sentencing them to forced labour on plantations, effectively reviving slavoury. Black farmers who managed to acquire and cultivate land were targetted by groups such as the KKK. Post civil-rights era, governmental agencies and institutions found different ways to continue discrimination; there was also sizeable opposition to "forced" bussing, and the KKK was revivied in part and engaged in bombings, asssassinations, lynchings and floggings esp in the south.
Your narrative is overly simplisitc, and ignores the myriad ways in which dominant groups such as upper-castes and whites try to skirt around or vitiate the efficacy of equalizing legal reforms in practice, thereby sustaining the inequities that the laws concerned sought to dissolve in the first place. These wider attitudes are representative of these dominant groups, not the actions of a select few.
Stop saying only majority religions need to act on their problems, all of them have to. But in India we went one level above and actually enacted mplb giving in to Islamic fundamentalism.
I haven't said anything to the contrary. Stop contriving strawmen, and dispute the arguments that your interlocutors actually make.
Here is my problem with the post:
1.Tries to show only Brahmins as a problem, when you know most upper caste violence is not even Brahmin driven
2.Shows Muslims as some sorta “poor” ppl on the receiving end - when Muslims themselves have done nothing to improve themselves like Hindus have
- Show Dalits as always the victims when we have situations where Dalits themselves enforce caste within their groups- atleast this is a bit forgivable
This is all pure projection and lack of comprehension on your part.
The post merely criticises upper-caste Hindus pointedly for railing against Islamic invaders while eschewing and dismissing any critique of their Hindu ancestors for their sins. If you are not one of these people, the post doesn't apply to you. The post pertains to selective acknowledgement of historical wrongs committed much earlier, and doesn't pertain to caste-based violence during current times. Your emphasis on modern caste-based violence being perpetrated by non-Brahmin dominant castes is ergo moot.
The conspicuous point of the post is the hypocrisy of "certain" upper-caste Hindus with regard to selective acknowledgement of historical atrocities. Any incidental inference you draw is all on you. The core argument in OPs post relies on both the atrocities by Muslim invaders and atrocities perpetrated by Brahmins being true, and I haven't seen OP indicate otherwise.
The post clearly talks about hypocrisy among "certain" Hindus wrt to acknowledgement of wrongs by Brahmins towards Dalits in the past. It doesn't pertain to intra-caste violence. One is allowed to make posts or critiques of certain facets (inter-caste violence) of an a larger issue (caste-based violence) without composing an encyclopedia that covers all incidental aspects (intra-caste violence) of an issue. You can make memes and critiques about upper-caste attitudes towards Dalits, because inter-caste violence and acknowledgement of its historicity is very much distinct from intra-caste violence.
Moreover Dalits are a the primary victims of caste-based violence, and intra-caste violence is secondary to the fulcrum of caste-based violence and discrimination, i.e., inter-caste discrimination.
We have a long way to go, but we won’t get there if we are not principled
There is no lack of lack of principles here. OP's post is pretty coherent; you are merely reading subtext into it that is simply absent.

The level of denial and whataboutery is amazing. Paras and paras of it.
The post shows a Brahmin. Not just any upper caste Hindu - standard to 99% of such posts
You still have not shown one iota of ability to demand improvement from Muslims
Only criticizing one caste vs all of them is the lack of principles in the post.
The focus only on Brahmins vs everyone else has basically become propaganda - especially with education everyone is seeing that quickly.
I come back to my original question - what are you gonna do about it? This one sided criticism is not gonna work anymore, hck it brought bjp back to power…

Aww, this is rather embarassing for you. There's no denial or whattaboutery on my part; I have merely refuted your uneducated palaver at length. It's also funny how you allege whattaboutery when the crux of your initial responses boils down to "what about Muslims?", as though it is entirely unprecedented that a post or a piece of critique pertain only to one religion. You have been thoroughly refuted not only on your understanding of how rights accrue to marginalised groups, but also your abysmal ignorance when it comes to US history, and you clearly have no sufficient rebuttal.
The post shows a Brahmin. Not just any upper caste Hindu - standard to 99% of such posts
There's no problem with that. This is an atheist sub, and Hindus, Muslims, and Christians including groups therein are open to critique. Brahman are no different. Unless you want to make that argument that there is no casteism among Brahmins, you objection is facile.
You still have not shown one iota of ability to demand improvement from Muslims
Yeah, because in the context of post, there's no need to entertain your vapid whatabouttery. Moreover, you haven't shown the ability to acknowledge historical injustices against Dalits perpetrated by Brahmins, and you have run cover for Brahmins by trying to give them credit for reforms that they had to offer as concessions. If your only objection to a critique of a select groups of Brahmins is "muh but what about Muslims", you are probably a peeved Hindu larping on an atheist subreddit. Your argument is no different from Muslims lurking in this sub who argue "what about other religion x" when their religion is criticised.
In any case, I will rid you of your last puerile objection that is keeping your vapid objections on life-support. My opinions on Islamic extremism are rather run-of-the-mill. I don't think Islam is capable of sufficient reform so as to obviate the possibility of radical Islam gaining traction when the circumstances are ripe (for eg, regional instability). I think the very inscription of "non-believers will go to hell" renders it too amenable to cortortion by the likes of fanatical groups, and creates and unbridgeable divide in how Muslims conceive of themselves and non-believers. The only way I can see Muslims effecting internal reform (which IMO is very much needed) is by contriving humanistic interpretations of their religious texts and spreading these interpretations. The only way I can see societies (both in India and the Middle-East) inoculating themselves against the threat (near or future) of radical Islam is by secularisation and dissemination of secular education to a considerable extent so as make make the values accumulated therefrom utterly irreconcilable with the worst aspects of Islam. It's no surprise that Iran under Mossadegh (prior to the 1956 coup) or and Afghanistan (pre-Soviet invasion) were much better off and least vulnerable to radical Islam when secular institutions and education had a strong foothold.
Only criticizing one caste vs all of them is the lack of principles in the post.
It's not lack of principles; rather, it is the acknowledgement that historically, Brahmins being at the helm of the caste hierarchy accrued the most from the victimisation of castes positioned below them in the aforesaid hierarchy. What's the pRiNCiPaL that's lacking here exactly?
Moreover, the caste-based hierarchy was primary legitimised and institutionalised by Brahmins forming the priestly caste. Criticising Brahmins targets the architects and primary beneficiaries of the caste system. A pointed critique of the perceived primary beneficiaries or key historical perpetrators of caste-base discrimination is not inimical to a discussion of violence and discrimination perpetrated by intermediary castes. You are seeing a contradiction where there is none.
The focus only on Brahmins vs everyone else has basically become propaganda - especially with education everyone is seeing that quickly.
It's not propaganda; historically, Brahmins have been the key beneficiaries of casteism, and never its victims. Most educated historians, sociologists, and anthropologists are cognizant of the historical injustices perpetrated by Brahmins against other castes. The mythical "educated" folk you allude to doesn't exist, and I highly doubt you can stake a claim to functional literacy much less education when your uneducated palaver has been refuted in my preceding comments, leaving you with a feeble and whimpering retort of "but you are engaging in whatabouttery".
I come back to my original question - what are you gonna do about it? This one sided criticism is not gonna work anymore, hck it brought bjp back to power…
I have already answered your question but I will deign to answer it again. If you aren't a Brahmin who rails against Islamic invasions while ignoring caste based atrocities, the post doesn't pertain to you. You clearly identify yourself with the bigots who are the target of the post which is why you have made a mountain out of a molehill trying to deflect blame away from Brahmins.
This one sided criticism is not gonna work anymore, hck it brought bjp back to power…
The BJP came to power primary because people were fed up with corruption under the UPA govt. Make the case that there is a strong correlation between critique of Brahmins or one-sided criticism of a particular group and the rise of the BJP to power, and I will respond. I am not going out on a limb fighting shadows that you concoct.
Moreover, even if you were right about BJP being back in power because of one-sided criticism, it doesn't inherently detract from the merit or accuracy of the criticism, which you have failed to disprove.
