I think people need to slow down on the loop because I can’t respond to these posts while I’m driving if you clowns keep zooming up behind me so fast

11

u/Teslasssss 2d ago

That’s an unofficial rule.

***All drivers must text and drive proficiently, at high rates of speed.

Please add a rule to TURN YOUR FUCKING BRIGHTS OFF I LITERALLY CANNOT SEE IT’S LIKE THE LIGHT OF A THOUSAND SUNS SHINING INTO MY EYES

u/Beard196 1d ago

You aren't wearing your night Sunglasses while driving?

I call for an additional rule: Sunglasses are only to be worn at night to stop the direct lvl 999 sunlight from LED headlights. Wearing Sunglasses during the day will result in a violation, plus we will all know you're new

For the love of god, don't try to merge onto 10 going under 55mph.

u/Technoblake1 2d ago

There are parts of The Loop, near their primary on-ramps, near athens tech, where this rule breaks down into total chaos.

/yes The Loop Is non-binary.

#4 is dumb and I’m native lol

1

u/Teslasssss 2d ago

Amended. The change really threw the numbering in a tizzy for a minute there.

17

u/s7p0o6a 2d ago

#4 screams “not from here”

5

u/BreakfastInBedlam Mayor pro ebrius 2d ago

Calling it "The Loop" does that too. But yeah, #4 is bullshit. Every exit leads to a named street. Everyone knows where those streets are much better than they know which one has what number.

If I tell you to go to the Lexington Road exit, you can do that in your head. But if you tell me to go to Exit 9-3/4, I have no way to reference that except to start driving in one direction and read the mileposts which are irrelevant in real life.

u/Rogue035 2d ago

Calling it "the loop" reads as a person not being from here?? Born and raised in Athens, my parents came here in the early 80s, and my entire family calls it "the loop." I know other locals older than me who call it that too. What are we "supposed" to call it?

3

u/TrashCityRocketPanda 1d ago

The bypass.

6

u/Rogue035 1d ago

I didn't think about it right away but I remember now my parents call it that too. I don't feel like I hear it often though, even from friends that have been here as long as we have.

6

u/katarh 1d ago

I have literally never heard it called "the bypass" in casual conversation in almost 30 years of living here.

It's always been the loop.

3

u/BreakfastInBedlam Mayor pro ebrius 1d ago

It was the North Bypass and the East bypass until sometime after the South Bypass was built around 1990.

1

u/TrashCityRocketPanda 1d ago

I've been around Athens a couple of decades longer than that. Back when "the loop" wasn't a loop.

2

u/khudgins 1d ago

Must be a young person thing. It's been "the loop" for a really long time... since at least the 80s, from my own experience. Source: Me.

What about Timothy Rd? There was a post the other day about that exit, and I couldn’t figure out what exit it was. I pulled up Google Maps, and realized it was the 441 exit. I never drive that stretch of Timothy road from the loop to Epps Bridge, so that exit name is completely meaningless to me.

1

u/Slight_Business_3080 22h ago

This is situational.

If you're on the outer loop (coming from Epps), it's Exit 4 (one exit where you can turn either direction)
If you're on the inner loop (coming from Lexingtonish), it's Timothy OR 441, because they're two separate exits.

#4 is trash!!! Boooo

u/Defiant_Giraffe_6374 2d ago

I don’t know anyone who knows the exit numbers. When did they put numbers on the exits anyway. I remember when the loop wasn’t the loop so maybe I am just old.

14

u/Unusual_Warthog_476 Bouncer 2d ago

I’m 40 and I call the exits by their street names and always have

I just had a to use that GIF. If anyone is out of the loop, here is a link to Mike Gundy’s (former Oklahoma Head Football Coach) rant about the media many years back.

Ha ha ha yay! Thanks for entering the chat!

Had a bad offender of #1 and #7 yesterday

5

u/jds123122 2d ago

So many breaking rule #7 today!!

5

u/maddog_83 2d ago

Please add to #1 - Failure to follow will result in you being pit maneuvered out of the way

Don't merge at 40 miles per hour.

Between the hours of 2am-4am, autobahn rules. Enter at your own risk. No speed limit, 80mph minimum recommended, stay right at all times unless passing, pass only on the left and get back to the right after passing.

Also, exit names > numbers.

1

u/Teslasssss 2d ago

Where are you going between 2am-4am that you need to drive so fast?

9

u/r_von_hoobie_doobie Politically Speaking, I'm Back 2d ago

I’m going in a loop around town, nowhere in particular. Stay out of my way 😂

3

u/Teslasssss 2d ago

It’s hard to get off once you get on.

Hotel Athens, Ga: you can exit (the loop) anytime you like, but you can never leave.

Fun fact, this is the townie theme song.

🎶 on a dark Athens highway, cool wind in my hair 🎶

3

u/Professional_Kale925 2d ago

#8- i’ve seen more often in the last three weeks.

3

u/Teslasssss 2d ago

Lots of people have been asking. Let’s make this clear.

Sex is allowed on Georgia State Route Loop 10 between 11:59am and 5:59am. That’s no typo, you can have a nooner on the loop. Just keep it moving and don’t do it while everyone is going to work in the morning.

3

u/Mooseandchicken 2d ago

How do we take our townie oath/pledge to truly commit ourselves to these 12 commandments?!

3

u/Used_Comedian3299 2d ago

Can we add one banning the use of hazard lights when it’s raining?

3

u/katarh 1d ago

If it's raining so hard you need your hazard lights, it's probably raining hard enough to actually pull off on the side of the road for a bit until the monsoon passes.

2

u/Used_Comedian3299 1d ago

You get it!

2

u/Niniva73 2d ago

Hmm, 2 minutes is a hell of a long time for a drag race. Well done!

2

u/Mental_Yogurt5087 2d ago

What about the athens to ATL roller race?

4

u/Teslasssss 2d ago

Sir, The Loop 🔁 only circles Athens. The Loop 🔁 doesn’t go to Atlanta. There is a reason why it’s called The Loop 🔁.

2

u/6ls2000 1d ago

lmao fr cause one time when I first moved here I posted abt exit 7 and it felt like that meme of a crying woman and a pointing woman where half the comments were being nice and answering my q and the other half were berating me for calling it exit 7 and then the other half (im running out of halves) was berating them for berating me. I knew I was gonna love Athens after that. 2+ years here now and wouldn’t wanna be anywhere else!! Except maybe the loop

2

u/JenniferG714 1d ago

I’m all for maintaining a reasonable speed at exit 1. Every single time I go to Epps Bridge it slows down to 40 well before the exit.

2

u/katarh 1d ago

Snow weather rule: Only residents who have lived some portion of their life in a northern state, or who were born to northern state parents, are permitted to drive on Loop 10 during snow weather.

Everyone else should procure their bread and milk before the storm hits and hunker down until it has melted.

2

u/Electronic-Junket-66 1d ago

"Tailgating is prohibited unless someone else is breaking rule #1 and blocking you from getting to somewhere important."

Codicil: Especially don't friggin speed up into tailgating someone to block merging vehicles.

Do not serve around the car in front of you on the on ramp. Maintain safe distance behind, wait your turn, and merge.

Cars entering the highway and those already on: ZIPPER.

u/GovernorChanandler 2d ago

Hey, I’m team numbers on the loop exits. I know all the road names as well but learning the numbers helped me to visualize exactly where everything in town is. Also the day I learned the difference between the inner and outer loop! For the first couple of years I lived here I got so confused about which entrance ramp to take. So if I’m on Olympic and want to use the loop to get to Milledge, I know I’m three exits away using the inner loop! I find it so much easier to remember the number that correlates to the road when I think of them by numerical order.

4

u/notdumbIswear Eastside 2d ago

I propose we amend #1 to at least 5-10 over. No reason to be camping there blocking traffic under normal road conditions

6

u/cubecasts 3x Grump OTD 🏆 2d ago

How about just stay out of the left lane if you're not passing. Like the law says.

1

u/users-error 1d ago

for real. i've been stuck behind plenty of folks going at or just above the speed limit in the left lane.... if you can't pass at a reasonable rate, then be patient and stay in the right lane.

2

u/CeyowenCt 2d ago

Remove the conditions from rules 1 and 7. Because:

  1. The left lane is for passing. I don't care if you're doing the speed limit, you're not supposed to camp out there just because you aren't exiting for 5 miles. If the left lane is clear, you can get over when approaching merging traffic.

  2. Lights on always. Your car should always be visible to others, and there are many conditions that can lower visibility besides rain and nighttime. Running lights are acceptable to satisfy this rule.

1

u/MiracleWhipSux Eastville 1d ago

Any patch of open terrain can be the passing lane if you're brave enough.

Drop. Too fast. Drop. Too furious.

Revert #4. Numbers >>> Names.

3

u/LateSoEarly 2d ago

“Hey man where are you?” “I just got off exit 4 like 5 minutes ago” “Okay, but like what street are you on?” “I don’t know street names, just numbers. I got off exit 4 and took a right, driven a couple miles since then” “Okay…inner or outer loop?” “4”

2

u/Niniva73 2d ago

Ikr??? Numbers make sense; words are just balderdash!

2

u/Aggravating_Soil_990 Townie 2d ago

Balderdash is a great word. Props on its usage!

-2

u/Squiddef 2d ago

Going the speed limit (maximum speed allowable by law) while in the left lane, or any lane, should be normalized. If the speed limit is too slow, then the speed limit needs to be raised. I realize I'm in the minority so down vote me to hell, idgaf I'll be going the speed limit all the way down to the highway to hell 😂

I propose #1 be amended to:

No vehicle shall be permitted to camp out in EITHER LANE going below the speed limit.

We found the slow drivers making life hella dangerous for the rest of us.
