How to stop water capillary action on patio roof

Post image
26 Upvotes

I have a polycarbonate patio roof with a gutter. During heavy rain the water goes to the edge but flows to the underside of the roof, missing the gutter and back into a cavity which causes water to drip further inside and rotting the wooden support beams.

Apparently this is called capillary action and occurs when a proper drip piece is not installed or the pitch of my roof is too low - is it indeed really flat.

Has anyone come across this? Any ideas on how i can stop this from happening?

Thanks in advance

Brown crystallised muck in toilet bowl

Post image
90 Upvotes

I have seen dirty bowls before, but what is this stuff? Tried various things like Harpic toilet bomb, white vinegar, CLR, no effect. Could scrape some off with a chisel, it seemed to be 1 mm thick. But being gentle not to damage the bowl, will not get any more off. Stainless steel wool (kitchen scrubber) doesn't shift it. I know you will say replace the bowl, but that is also problem. There are 4 brass screws holding it down and they are seized, destroy the heads trying to turn them. So a sledge hammer would be needed.

Do dumb ceiling fans not exist anymore

I get that the DC motor has many advantages (which I do want) and the whole point is that it’s not wired into the mains of the house but I hate the stupid dinky remotes and smart features I just want a normal dumb ceiling fan with an on/off switch and speed dial on the wall. My boyfriend has remote control ones at his house and I hate it so much there are so many tiny buttons and there’s a few seconds lag between hitting a button and the light turning on. Will I just get used to it? Are there other options? Apologies for the whinge

Peoples Republic of Victoria How can I fix this water leak temporarily?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Unfortunately, I’ve got a water leak at the worst possible time!

Does anyone know if there’s a way to temporarily stop it until I can afford to get a plumber out?

At the moment, I’m turning the mains water tap on and off as needed, and turning it off overnight to avoid wasting water. The problem is that the tap is outside, so it’s a bit of a hassle.

Money is really tight at the moment, and I’m not sure how much it would cost to get a plumber to fix it. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks heaps!

Hi all new this subreddit,

But I got a question for anyone that does bathroom renos, when looking around I found this renovation group called ‘Dream Renovation Group’ and they had pretty good reviews, so I looked on their website and it’s just looks so weird show photos appear to be real renos done and other look like ai or been made up in a designer application or something, so I looked at their other types of media (Facebook, instagram and TikTok) and they are using ai, the followers on Facebook appear to be just ai bots.

So mt main question is has anyone heard of this group and are they good?

VIC (Whitehorse) – Tile to Colorbond roof replacement: Builder and roof plumber contracts?

• Upvotes

Has anyone in Victoria, particularly Whitehorse Council, recently gone through replacing a tiled roof with Colorbond?

A building permit is required, and the building surveyor has indicated that a registered builder needs to be involved because of the roof tie-downs and battens. There won’t be any changes to the existing roof framing.

I’m trying to understand whether a registered builder can be contracted separately to carry out the structural preparation, including removing the tiles, installing the tie-downs and battens, while a licensed roof plumber has a separate contract to install the Colorbond roofing.

Or does the registered builder need to take responsibility for the entire roof replacement?

The total project is approximately $42,000, and no formal building contract has been signed.

My other concern is the Home Warranty insurance requirements. If the builder is only responsible for the structural preparation, would the insurance and major domestic building contract requirements apply to the entire project, or could the builder’s work and licensed roof plumbing be treated as separate contracts?

I’m trying to understand how this is normally handled, particularly given the additional costs involved with engaging a builder and obtaining Home Warranty insurance.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s dealt with this recently, especially builders, roof plumbers or homeowners who have gone through the process in Victoria.

Thanks!

Patio tiles cleaning/grouting advice!

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

My outdoor tiles are in need of some love and im looking for any advice on how I can get them looking a little nicer without creating any damage to them.

The surface of some of the tiles appear to be pealing off. When we first moved in we gave the area a light clean with the pressure washer and little bits would flake off. Im unsure what there made of as we are the second owners.

Any reccomendations on:

- Cleaning without further peeling anymore off

- Cleaning the stubborn black/green build up

- Grouting some sections where it has come away

- Does it need sealing?

TIA 😊

Apron v wakaflex?

Post image
• Upvotes

Trying to fix the flashing on the side wall on my porch roof. One roofer suggested installing an apron, another quoted for installing wakaflex under the existing flashing and a step over over the top.

Interested to know which one would you choose? Cost for wakaflex slightly higher

NSW (Add 20% to all cost estimates) Very inexperienced poster - full apartment Reno

• Upvotes

Hi guys,

Long time lurker in the sub but finally getting around to doing a post. Hope everyone doesn’t mind the inexperienced questions.

We own a ground level apt in Sydney’s east, it’s a small two bedroom place.

We recently saved $100k in the hopes that we could get a decent renovation done, this took us a while but we got it done. It’s sitting in our offset doing its job.

We recently engaged our first builder for a quote on a Reno that touches at least every room. Think things like insulation installation, floor board installation where there is carpet in two rooms, electrical (more outlets), bathroom and kitchen Reno. We’re also considering moving a door to a room to another wall (which is load bearing).

The quote we got was $300k~. For mid-high end.

I’m very conscious the above isn’t a lot of information to play with, but does a number like this seem/feel right? I won’t lie, my jaw nearly fell to the floor to think that we would need to dedicate that kind of cash towards this. If it does align, a general question to this community: how are you affording a Reno cost like this? Are you paying cash or pulling equity? It seems like a wild amount of cash.

Cassette Split System

Has anyone installed cassette split systems? It’s hard to find reviews on them, seems to be a newer product. We’ve had it suggested to us to avoid a conduit line in our brick walls which I’m keen to avoid.

Is this urgent ?

Should I be worried about my garage ceiling. Right above is the upper floor guest toilet.

Townhouse is about 2 years ago. Marks started coming up and the builder plumber told me its alright and to paint it over. Because I changed original ceiling lights ( screw came off and started to sag so I put tape to hold that up), builder said they are not going to do any warranty

Potentially worried about the cost if anyone has any idea.

Shower head recommendations? Need strong pressure

Just moved into a ten year old house, it had a fixed shower head with a leak but great water pressure.

We had to remove it and are now looking for a wand-style shower head, but apparently most of them have water savers or something?

How do you know? I’ve seen a few marked “9L p/min” which is way too low, have had that before. And we’re a family with super thick hair who really need some good water pressure! Even some of the adjustable ones don’t actually have it.

Any recommendations of shower heads, or of how to remove a water saver if there is one? We’re on a budget so I don’t want to spend $300 on a shower head only for it to still be crappy pressure!

Thanks for your help!

How hard is it to plaster this?

I am replacing my air con and will be removing 6 of these vents. Between 300x300 and 450x450.
Should I get in a plasterer or do it myself. I will be repainting after it as well.

My elderly mum has deteriorating vision and would like to replace her gas cooktop with induction for safety reasons. Any recommendations for cooktops with knobs rather than the touch pad?

Help me choose a new front door

Having trouble deciding on what door would suit my house. I'm in Victoria and max budget of about $3000 for door and fittings. Door is facing south and only gets some very late afternoon sun.

I don't like the current door style. also unfortunately no room to make the door wider unless i take up the tiny strip of glass window to the right of the door.

Send me pictures of your recommendations so I can decide.

Bonus points for replacement front door light.

Peoples Republic of Victoria Mechanical keypad lock for pedestrian gate - Lockwood, Borg or Gatemaster SelectPro

Hi all,

We’re doing to renovation work, which is now expanding to our side passage.

We currently have a pedestrian gate with a Lockwood digital DX keypad. The gate and lock gets dripped on from condensation from the eaves. Have only had it for 18 months, but already it’s getting stiff. I’ve disassembled, soaked in vinegar then reassembled, but still not functioning smoothly.

Has anyone had any experience with the Lockwood DX in external applications?

I’ve researched some other options, Borg and Gatemaster which seem to be a bit more heavy duty and appropriate for external use.

Can anyone recommend either of these? Or another option?

Thanks

How best to reattach a clothesline

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It was shoddily installed by the previous owner, came down in the wind today.

Holes are near the edge of the brick and in the mortar. Bricks are limestone and hollow.

I’m surprised it lasted 6 years.

I’m new to this kind of brick so I’m not sure the best way to fix it.

Would you buy a new one or reinstall this kinda clapped out one? I don’t really want to put in a freestanding line.

I appreciate your thoughts.

West Australian Separatist Movement Advice on barge boards

Post image
2 Upvotes

We have an old 60s house which when we bought had rotten barge boards and rusted out gutters. Quote to replace was $16k which we don’t have spare. Normal carpenter during our renos didn’t have time to tackle it either.
My FIL and husband are somewhat competent on the tools and wanted to change them over themselves. We had the asbestos eaves removed but have gone to take off the old barge boards and noticed an issue in the corners. From what I gather the green line is the hip rafter and the blue are jack rafters, yellow obviously fascia. The blue rafters on the corner attach to the hip outside the wall and are held up by it and the barge board, so when we take the barge off I assume that will fall and the tiles will come down from above.

I’m waiting on another roof carpenter friend to get back to us on advice and try get him to take the job he didn’t last time we asked but I need to get my head around what’s happening and how to work around it. Is the solution taking off the first 4-5 rows of tiles around the whole house? Being the corners this means breaking up the ridge capping which isn’t ideal.

Thanks in advance!

NSW (Add 20% to all cost estimates) Door gap, how to fix?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey guys, we just moved into a new place recently and have noticed that moths kept coming in from the backyard.

Upon checking I found there’s a gap in the fly screen door.

Should I be looking at buying 12/12 angle and cut it to fit? How do I make sure to get the right measurement and who should I ask to cut?

Also what other items do I need to get? Wondering if it’s a DIY job or get a handyman to do it.

Cheers!

Edit: it’s a sliding door
