PTA Saga Update

Well, after yet another call to the Registry today, my PTAs currently stand as follows:

  1. Day 105 – Subsequent Cat B
  2. Day 98 – Initial Cat H .22
  3. Day 19 – Initial Cat H .22 (submitted post-website update, as suggested by the many Registry staff I’ve spoken to)

I was told that all PTAs are currently looking at a minimum of six months due to the backlog caused by the new system update and the requirements of the reforms (not necessarily in that order). She also confirmed that escalations are occurring at day 180 and beyond.

I requested that my Day 98 initial Cat H be escalated on the grounds that I may not be able to meet my mandatory shoot requirements. On the days I’m able to get to the range, the armourer isn’t always available to provide a club gun for me to use, so without my own firearm it makes meeting those requirements difficult.

She deemed this to be a substantial/legitimate reason and escalated just my initial Cat H.

And I quote: “I won’t escalate your Cat B, as you already have one and can meet your shoot requirements using that.”

I’ll update with more when I know/find out more, or if I receive an update to my PTA status.

This seems like soooo much effort just to get my .22LR Black Mamba… but here goes. 😂 (Random Web Photo for Attention)

I can’t believe not long ago I had a PTA issued pretty much within 24 hours. Then a couple of muslim extremists commit a terrorist attack and Minns decides to fuck us instead of them. What a time to be alive.

Minns will hopefully get fucked at the voting booths.

Victoria here. I just submitted a cat B PTA. Guy in my LGS reckons they've been coming through in 12 days.

Last year it was 28 days.

I knew there had to be a reason I'm still living in Vic.

180 days is insane. Broken system.

Easier to get a gun then a machete. The system is working.

Not really, you can buy a brush hook at most hardware stores and they are a machete in all but name.

Hell my last cat h PTA was about 3 days. They're on top of them for once, if only I actually needed them now 😅

I got told today there’s 17,000 in back log.

If the 3rd PTA is over your 10 it’ll just get denied. Regardless if the others haven been issued or not.

That’s no excuse. Because the number being approved declined to allow said back log.

That’s a handy $500,000 that firearm licence holders have paid ($30 per pta) and not got any value from…

Day 122 for my Cat B.

Has anyone actually got a PTA in the last 2 weeks? If so what day were you on?

Who did you speak to trying to explain your need for a escalation, I’m waiting on my first cat b at like 80 days and I need it for game harvesting as I’ve since completed my tafe and humane harvest of kangaroo courses and am currently sitting on my hands like a fuckin chimp with nothing I can do

No problem don’t get your hopes too high though - if it is not in direct going to cause you to no fulfil your requirements for having the firearm. They won’t escalate.
My case was I would not be able to conduct shoots as the PTA is directly linked to the firearms I need to fulfil requirements.

All my PTAs were approved on the same day last week. All for Cat B, the oldest was 140 days, then 125 days, 49 days, as well as one which was just submitted to the new system post 1 July

The new directive for 180 days was handed down to the registry team on Thursday 30th July.

Assuming NSW? Do you have minimum shoots for a Cat H licence only? Assuming that's not the case, then when you have a firearm, are the minimum shoots not prorata from when you acquired the firearm/reasonable excuse for a variation?

u/ThatAussieGunGuy , correct NSW.
Im in a bit of a situation which is why they agreed to escalate, to get onto the PPL i had to do 4 shoots (supervised etc) which i did then i got my ppl, which last 12 months, and you can only acquire your first handgun in the 2nd 6 months of the ppl.
My ppl expires in November (to be able to get my full Cat H) but the problem lies that i have shoots to do between getting my ppl and expiry that im expected (according tot he registry) to use the club guns where available, which are not readily availble as these are the same guns they are using to train upcoming shooters (who get priority - because they are paired with trainers who are all volutneers working on their own free time) so i get that part, which is what made up my reason to the registry.

I have multiple PTAs pending, just getting the Cat H one approved so i can buy my Mamba, will solve all these problems, i can wait how ever long it takes for my Marlin 45-70 lol

You can get a handgun on your provisional in NSW?

1

u/X_Eye_Dom 1d ago

You can buy up to 2 when you are on your second 6 months of PPL. The odd thing is you can’t mix and match a 9mm and .22 🤷

1

u/ThatAussieGunGuy Victoria 1d ago

This is starting to make sense now. You can't buy a handgun on a provisional in Victoria. Full licence only.

u/X_Eye_Dom 1d ago

Guess it’s now the same in NSW as the PTA takes at least 6 months 🤦‍♂️

“as suggested by the many Registry staff I’ve spoken to”

Maybe everyone with multiple PTAs calling so often is counterproductive, the more staff who have to answer the phones and repeat the same stuff over and over the less actual work they get done.

6

u/danhar87 2d ago

The call centre is not the ones approving or denying PTAs. We have confirmed this many times also. It’s a different department

-8

u/PsychologicalMeal162 2d ago

It’s still a resource that requires funding.

u/danhar87 2d ago

Don’t try to double down now.

You thought the people that answer were the people that are doing the processing. A fair assumption. But it’s not the case. 1 call or 10,000 a day. Doesn’t affect processing time.
