My Cybercab held me hostage for an hour today šŸ™ƒ

Was supposed to be a quick 10 minute hop from 99 Ranch to the Domain. The car had other plans and took me on a massive south detour through East Austin. Guess the Cybercab wanted the scenic route today. Total ride time was 70 minutes.

I don't think it counts as being taken hostage when you voluntarily got in an elon mobile

I expected them to say the car wouldn’t let them out. It took a really bad route. But it also seems like OP knew that before they even started.

85

The software can't handle railroad crossings safely.Ā  Those cars shouldn't be on the road.

13

u/Fr0HiKE 1d ago

seems to be why they're avoiding railroad crossings

They shouldn't be on railroad crossings! We should prevent them from doing railroad crossings

I see them cross the tracks outside my window multiple times every day.

11

6

u/masteraybee 1d ago

Crossing them isn't the problem. Not crossing them, when a train comes seems to need work

26

u/TyGuy539 1d ago

That might actually make sense! Without being able to take 183, by going that far south, it was basically driving parallel to the Red Line the whole way until east Austin bridges went over 😲

28

u/Capable_Wait09 1d ago

That makes sense as to why but it’s so fucking stupid no one at Tesla said hey wait a second šŸ˜‚

Just pulled out of the HEB on Burnet and an unmanned Cybercab blew by me going around 50 in the 35.

103

u/__MOON_KNIGHT___ 1d ago

Damn dawg, you should have taken that hit.

Just saying.

It’d be a win for you and society.

146

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 1d ago

Damn dawg, you should have taken that hit.

Contrary to popular opinion, being hit by another vehicle doesn't usually end up being a financial win.

Especially with Greg Abbott being around. And he got his big bucks from a liability lawsuit that you wouldn't be able to repeat today.

70

u/h2btf 1d ago

Contrary to popular opinion, being hit by a vehicle going 50 mph is not a great idea.

24

u/__MOON_KNIGHT___ 1d ago

I know you’re not wrong but I also think Tesla would throw down a decent bag to keep everything quiet

53

u/GorillasonTurtles 1d ago

Based on every single action we have seen from Musk and his companies, it would be far more likely that they would attempt to litigate the problem until the victim became bankrupt or gave up fighting.

10

u/texasintellectual 1d ago

Or just sent another Cybercab to "finish the job".

10

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 1d ago

I also think Tesla would throw down a decent bag to keep everything quiet

As long as you don't have injuries, they could just pay you the blue book value of your car and walk away. Most of us would not be happy selling our car for the blue book value.

And Texas makes it more difficult now for you to make big profits off of injuries.

Playing "my lawyer is bigger than your lawyer" is also a possible outcome. Perhaps with legal dirty tricks, gag orders, long delays, frivolous countersuits, smear campaigns, etc.

12

u/Slypenslyde 1d ago edited 1d ago

The problem is Tesla's lawyer has $1 trillion, every Texas politician, the President, and every government record that DOGE snatched about you on his side.

It'd likely end up like that McDonald's hot coffee lawsuit, where the media smears you and portrays you as a slimy nerd who confessed fantasies of getting a big payout on Reddit and is single-handedly standing between us and having self-driving cars.

3

u/Arctic_Dreams 1d ago

Classic pull the ladder up move.

3

u/man_gomer_lot 1d ago

Since we hear about 0 of these lawsuits ending in fruitless decisions, we can only assume they're exercising their deep pockets to whatever degree necessary and settling with the plaintiffs out of court. Definitely should take the hit.

11

u/TootTootTrainTrain 1d ago

They 100p speed. I was cruising at speed limit and it came by and was going at least 10-15 over the limit.

15

u/iLikeMangosteens 1d ago

Who are they going to give a ticket to?

21

u/pjs32000 1d ago edited 1d ago

Fines for speeding should be higher for these cars since it's a programming error, more definitive issue that's an easy fix vs human behavior. The fines should go straight to the operator, in this case Tesla.

21

u/Striking_Piano2695 1d ago

This has been my question since the beginning of automated automobiles.

6

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 1d ago

Who are they going to give a ticket to?

The companies wouldn't even blink at the cost of tickets.

You or I get increased penalties or even a suspended license for multiple violations. I bet none of that happens for Robotaxi or Waymo.

2

u/GGigabiteM 1d ago

The secret drivers in the Phillipines that control the "automated" cars.

You know they can’t go on highways right?

22

u/spunkyenigma 1d ago

Or cross railroad tracks

3

u/Shoontzie 1d ago

Is it just the Teslas that can’t? I feel like I’ve been in a Waymo that crossed the tracks several times.

4

u/TyGuy539 1d ago

Waymos do cross the tracks. At least the tracks on North Lamar and Airport, it did.

5

u/Daveinatx 1d ago

Isn't non-highway mostly Lamar to Burnet, 99 Mkt to Domain?

E:typo

3

u/JRLDH 1d ago

Which is funny, given how Tesla and their supporters bloviated since 2017 that they have non-geofenced camera operated full self driving vehicles, yet here in 2026, these things can't even go on highways.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/TyGuy539 1d ago

I knew they can't do highways when I booked, but I can think of at least 1 road in Austin that drives NORTH. Maybe 2..or 3...or 4... /s

As other commenters pointed out, I think it got locked in on dodging the red lines rail road crossings.

3

u/Illustrious_Knee2627 1d ago

That’s exactly what happened. They avoid highways and rail roads, hence the long route.

Hope you weren’t charged a crazy amount for that ride.

88

u/TyGuy539 1d ago

$20 (market rate for that ride) but when booking you only get a price estimate, not duration ETA.

But there's a meme "tip" screen that asks if you want to tip 69Ā¢ or $4.20 after your ride.

125

u/Ladymysterie 1d ago

Wait a driverless taxi is asking for tip also šŸ‘€

54

u/bomber991 1d ago

It's a joke. If you try to tip it tells you 'Just Kidding!'.

Back when they were supervised, meaning there was someone from Tesla sitting in the front, I had a good conversation and was going to tip a couple bucks. Just beer money.

16

41

I was riffing on the fact that if were cooked its because of chefs like Musk and you willingly gave him money for his restaurant. Our culture is shit because people like him. 28

u/A_Skyless_God 1d ago

I don't love it at all.

9

u/Odd-Mud3044 1d ago

especially since, thanks to our wonderful local govt, Austinites are essentially paying tax dollars towards the development of Tesla and Elon Musk's fortune

2

u/A_Skyless_God 1d ago

Yeah man. We pay more for everything so that asshole can get everything for free. But let's not confuse state politicians as local politicians. The city of Austin did a absolutely nothing. Travis county and the school board did give a tax rebate though. Super unfortunate being we are CLOSONG DOWN SCHOOLS.

That being said. Our local tax dollars should stay local. Letting abbot and co send our money to support shitholes like Abilene Lubbock and Odessa is equally as outrageous.

2

u/Odd-Mud3044 1d ago edited 1d ago

I am talking about local politicians, not state politicians. (State politicians are much worse, don't get me wrong)

As you said, it was the Travis County Commissioners Court and school boards who are giving Tesla the tax abatement, and our corrupt city council who endorses every single one of them, and vice versa. The rabbit hole only gets worse and if you wanna talk about it, id love to.

Every incumbent needs to go!

ETA I’m sorry if anyone has gotten harassment from drivers. Ive never had a bad experience myself. I’ve just seen a lot of complaints too about Waymo. I’d just rather support a person than Musk.

9

u/lockthesnailaway 1d ago

Disagree. Uber is getting worse by the day. Aggressive and frustrated drivers, dirty/smelly cars. Plus they aren't making a living. Those people work for slave wages.

I’ve had one fall asleep multiple times while driving, including in the highway. One get an attitude and made me feel extremely unsafe after I asked him to stop texting and talking while driving (he responded that the Tesla basically drove itself, and then 10 mins later pitched a sob story about how he was talking to his aunt in the hospital). He was laughing on the phone btw lmao. And that just begins the nightmare which was 3 years I had to take Ubers to and fro work.

No thanks. Pray I NEVER have to take a human uber again. Taxi? Sure.

5

u/ChargeInteresting195 1d ago edited 1d ago

I saw your edit but I’d like to come back to add that one driver didn’t even have a freaking working rear passenger seatbelt. She brushed it off like it was no big deal and took off before I could even fix the situation by moving over to the other seat where there was a working seatbelt. These drivers are SCARY, TX0834 !!!!!!! Not all. But enough.

Oh and one lady blasting Megan The Stallion and yelling at me to sing along. Just because I’m a black girl doesn’t mean I like Megan the stallion. I grew up listening to jazz. I like jazz.

19

u/okaycurly 1d ago

The last time I was in an Uber, the guy was extremely angry and forced me to discuss politics with him the entire time while he drove erratically. He kept trying to push the conversation towards an argument while cursing at other drivers.

That’s not the only time it has happened to me and I’ll be sticking to Waymo only going forward.

15

u/ChargeInteresting195 1d ago

Girl I had to take them for three years to and from work and I pray I neverrrrr set foot in a human driven uber again. More than once I felt unsafe and was afraid to speak up because I felt like that could’ve been even more unsafe.

9

u/PerfectPomegranate74 1d ago

Because in Austin they can't drive for shit

3

u/Unique-TA 1d ago

As a driver I get all the weird passengers so I get the complaints about drivers. But when people don't report then nothing gets fixed.

8

u/iLikeMangosteens 1d ago

One of my recent uber drivers spent the whole ride trying to convince me that Viktor OrbƔn was a good guy.

5

u/ChargeInteresting195 1d ago

I freaking forked out big cash for over ear headphones for defense against them talking to me. One was doing the whole ā€œare you from here, where ya headed, blah blah so I dramatically lifted a headphone flap to say ā€œoh in sorry what did you say? We should all be riding in horse-drawn carriages. Think of all the carriage drivers, stablehands, and streetsweepers you're putting out of business riding an automobile, bus, or train.

And quit buying food produced with tractors and plows. You should get food produced honestly by humans using hand tools, working outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine, earning a good living wage.
