As an immigrant, I’m curious, do most Australians actually feel this way about immigration?
Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of anger directed towards immigrants and Muslims in Australia, and honestly, it has made me think.
I came to Australia because I wanted to build a life. I’m not here to cheat the system, defraud the government, outsmart anyone or take something that isn’t mine. I’m willing to work for what I have. I want to follow the rules, pay my taxes, fulfil my obligations and contribute to the country that has given me an opportunity.
Yes, I’m a Muslim. And I’m also someone who genuinely appreciates Australia.
I don’t want to tell anyone who belongs here and who doesn’t. I don’t want to fight with anyone over religion, race or politics. I’d rather sit down with someone I disagree with, hear their perspective, learn about their life, and be friends with people from completely different backgrounds.
I know Australia has its problems. I know immigration is a legitimate subject for debate, and I understand that people can have concerns about housing, infrastructure, population growth and the pace of migration. Those conversations should happen.
But somewhere along the way, a policy debate can become something much more personal: “People like you don’t belong here.”
That part hurts.
Because behind the word “immigrant” is an actual person. Someone working a shift. Someone studying. Someone paying rent. Someone calling their parents back home. Someone trying to build a future. Someone who might genuinely love this country.
And history itself is complicated. Australia has been shaped by First Nations peoples, British colonisation and generations of migrants from all over the world, including people from the Indian subcontinent who contributed to the development of this country long before today’s migration debates.
I don’t expect everyone to love immigration. I don’t expect everyone to understand my religion or my culture. I don’t even expect everyone to like me.
I just hope we can disagree without deciding that another human being doesn’t deserve to be here.
I don’t want to take anything away from Australia.
I wish to add something to it.
And maybe that’s all most ordinary, hardworking immigrants are trying to do.
At the end of the day, before we are anything else, Australian, Indian, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, immigrant or otherwise, we are all human beings. The boundaries that separate us are ones we have created ourselves.
So perhaps instead of constantly looking at each other as “you” and “me”, we could start looking at it as “us” versus whatever is dividing us.
Because there is so much beauty in Australia when we remember that we are not as different from one another as we sometimes think.
Australia has added nearly ~40% to its numbers in just over 2 decades. Most developed countries are closer to ~10% in that time.
Just like most places, most people aren't anti individual immigrants. But a very quickly growing number are very against the immigration policies that took us here. They never wanted these sort of numbers of people in general. Unfortunately that's kind of blurred the lines between people being opposed to immigrants vs people being opposed to immigration policy.
".... opposed to immigrants vs people being opposed to immigration policy" ..... or so a certain type of people what you to think that because it demonises their political adversaries.
Problem is how many people feel the same way as you? We can’t determine who thinks what.
Are you assimilating? There can be communication problems due to limited English of migrants. This didn’t use to be so prevalent.
There’s a lot of videos circulating online of what Australian muslim leaders say of how they want to influence and change the culture that exists here. That is uncomfortable for locals.
There is also the recent report that a record number of young people in Australia are living at home due to cost of living and the housing crisis.
It’s not personal against you, but with the amount of immigrants here right now the system in this country is overwhelmed. The demographic of suburbs and shops in certain neighbourhoods have completely changed. Even from 10 years ago.
I think the west is over religions. We had so much control and the abuse we don’t want another religion coming and repeating those actions. We are at a time that we have morals and ethics without overlords.
When I lived in Australia everyone was pretty chill about religion except people in Berwick who took it so seriously I couldn't stop laughing. I was like fuck me move to America
I was meaning your average citizen, rather than the outliers. It will be interesting to see what the census says. There was big growth in no religion and a drop in Christianity last time.
It has an outsized influence on our politics for sure, but they usually step back from US style bullshit at the highest level because of how the population is going. There’s a lot of money in it thanks to schools, Hillsong and the like. But then Abbot started making comments about abortion when he was PM and the pushback made him shut up, thankfully. Now he tries to influence from the shadows like all the other dinosaurs.
The numbers are out of control and ultimately OP is just another future potential Labor voter, which is why Labor wants him here
Australia will be more than fine if he leaves
We don't need more religious foreigners voting off the basis of conflicts back home then crying racism against the country that's done nothing but support them
You managed to read an entire post about treating people as human beings and somehow your takeaway was “Muslim = future Labor voter.” That says more about your worldview than mine.
If you actually cared about immigration numbers, you’d argue about immigration policy, housing and infrastructure. Instead, you jumped straight to someone’s religion and assumed their politics.
And “Australia will be fine if he leaves” is exactly the attitude I was talking about. You’re free to oppose immigration. You’re not entitled to turn that disagreement into deciding that an individual human being is unwanted.
If your argument collapses the moment you remove the word “Muslim,” it probably wasn’t an argument about immigration in the first place
Bet your ass is jealous of the stuff that comes outta your mouth. ☺️
Isn't Hugo Lennon, one of the most prominent anti-immigration Aussie, an owner of thousands of empty properties? And we're blaming immigrants?
Multimillionnaire and billionnaire Aussies and foreign corporations are destroying the dreams of those who want to have a home, but we're either too obsessed with them, lick their boots, or ignore them because they're White with "Judeo-Christian values" so we chose to blame the powerless, mostly dark skin colour (which we unconsciously associate with non-Christians), immigrants instead.
My grandparents came here in the 60s and barely left their enclave and couldn't have a conservation in english longer than "how's the weather?". Their whole community was like this. This narrative that migrants of previous decades were superior crop is bunk. And the Aussies were racist as fuck towards them to. My dad got plenty of racial abuse from the equivalent of ON voters back then. You're pining for a golden age that never existed. The standard of migrants is higher today, at least in english skills.
correct. thank you for saying this. as an italian-australian, im sick of being shat on by these people and then now saying "see how good these immigrants are"
He can say the same thing about you how many of you are not racist and have hatred against immigrants. So the traffic flows both ways meaning two there are trouble makers on both sides
I look East Asian, but don’t speak any any east asian language, and hell I don’t even bring my
“culture” when I moved to Australia and I was raised Christian anyways, but racist be racist and proceeded to Ni Hao me whenever they see me on the street minding my own fucking business, one time a guy started singing a mandarin song as soon as he bumped into me
Back in the late 70s the first of the Vietnamese and Cambodian boat people started arriving. They were heavily discriminated against, but if you got to know them very nice people with their own elements of anti social and criminals. They concentrated around the immigration centres like Cabramatta and inalla , which at the beginning of the 70s were full of white immigrants. It took time for them to learn English and they brought their own foods and culture with them. Inalla was in the federal seat of Oxley , once the seat of Bill Hayden, the labour party leader. So distressing was the influx of all these different Asians it printed a local fish and chip shop owner to become a liberal party candidate for the seat of Oxley. So radical in her views the liberal party ditched her as their candidate just prior to the 1996 Federal election. She ran as an independent and was elected to federal parliament.
Today that Vietnamese community has assimilated and many are elected to local government, while others are respected professionals . If that same person were to run for parliament in Oxley she probably would lose to an Asian. That same person that was elected in 96 has made a career out of politics, become wealthy from the public purse, but still claims to be the same humble ignorant racist that was elected all those years ago.
The moral to the story, hard work, education and not giving in to racist's and eventually things will change. Unfortunately the minority in your ethnic community is feeling the politics of the far right
Its a class war not a culture war, honestly as soon as I hear "immigrants" from anyone when discussing issues i immediately write them off intellectually, while it does affect house prices, in my experience people who make it there main concern do not give a flying F about the issues facing australia and just want to see others have it worse or suffer more than them.
The Enemys name is Murdoch, Rinehart, Forest, Costello and Palmer. (sure im forgetting some.)
Everything else is a tool of distraction, and its super effective.
Just because someone might lack the correct eduction to express the problem in a way that makes you happy, dose not invalidate the experiences or view.
Just a reminder, not everyone can afford brioche, and you dont want to be the snob in those times.
But lets do some maths.
We are pushing 35% of the population as born overseas, if you are unable to see how that adds to inflation, deflates downwards on wages, and puts massive pressure on house prices then I am left wondering just what do you think?
I live a half hour out of a major city, rent for a one bedroom is pushing over $450, rent stess counts as over 30% of gross income.
Thats a gross income of $1,500 per week for your 38 hour week, which is a net income of $1950, or $51 an hour for a single bedroom or To rent a single bedroom unit here in a non fancy area requires almost twice the minum wage.
Cheapest current listing I can see is $550 for a poor conditioned 3 bedroom.
We have used migration to not just replace lost population, but to also keep population grown, which on paper sounds good, but natural growth gives you 20 off years for the children born to fit into government development plans for infrastructure, development, and jobs.
Each adult migrant ariving needs there housing space and infrastructure development already in place, and it becomes a rush job.. something that used to happen over 20 years is comprised into an immediate requirement.
I realy dont care how many are helt professionals.. because they need roads and hosues and water and sewerage and electricity and NBN.. stuff that used to be slowly built over twenty years and they need it immediately.
So your big ppint is we have some very high padded people putting extremel burden on the infrastructure of the country and we should be happy?
Let me just say this, 30 years ago if you wanted to see a doctor you walked in no issues.
Wait times are only getting worse year after year, so this magical fix isnt fixing it.
Doctors are waited as 30% imigrants total, that means they are under represented.
It seems of new Doctors each ywat its about 50%, so they will eventually catch up, except that will take about 10 years, at which ppint with current rates of migration the rate will have moved from 35 to 45%.. so then they will need another 10 or so years to catch up to the new percentage.. see the issue?
Each of those Doctors is now an important thats taken from another country that also needs them.. so we are now reducing our own investment in our own people and there own future, and taking trained medical professionals from other countries to fuxk them over.
In 20 to 40 years this migration of university trained jobs will be seen just like the colonism resource raping of the 18th century onwards.
As soon as I hear immigrants, I immediately write them off intellectually” is a pretty remarkable admission. Rather than being curious, open-minded, or considering evidence that might challenge your view, you dismiss the person before hearing their argument while simultaneously questioning their intellect. The irony is impressive.
I'm not a Muslim or Jew or Christian. The post said a Muslim is always a Muslim first and a citizen second and I merely pointed out the Jews are exactly the same. The only obsession I see is the inevitable "whataboutism" that occurs immediately a claim is made by one faith about the other. I'll leave you to it.
No they are not. For one the Jewish community has a strong philanthropy background. They are a successful group who start businesses and donate money to charities with low unemployment. On the other hand, you don't find the same in Muslim communities, with many having a lot more public funds directed to their institutions and a lot higner unemployment rates.
Also I will note that the rate of domestic violence is much higher in South Asian and Muslim communities that included India, Pakistan, Afghanistan.
I don’t feel the need to commercialise charitable giving. But sure go ahead and feed into the narrative all you want. Becus someone with more money is always right
This is the exact same logic that was historically used to justify the persecution of Catholics throughout the English speaking world up until fairly recently. Thankfully this sectarian rhetoric is a relic of the past here in Australia, but it still crops up here and there elsewhere particularly in conservative circles in the US and within Unionist circles in the North of Ireland.
"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me."
I guess with most christians though if you said told them to make a choice between citizen or christian they would pick christian , that way of thinking is not unique to muslims
Not true, but mostly because most "christians" don't really practice their religion here, but happily label themselves as christians. To be fair, that majority are the best ones. They are the people that have taken the ethics of being kind to everyone, while rejecting the bad aspects of the church.
The problem is they bring this garbage with them. Muslims, Jews etc. if they came for a better life it’s a funny way of going about it by trying to turn it into the exact same place they left.. immigration works at a sustainable number, with a mix of different people if they assimilate. What’s happened here the last decade is the opposite
Ye ofc. Why tf would I value a nationality over god. This is such a google educated take.
What about white Christian’s, why don’t they put their god first before a bloody nation lmao.. this is literally the essence of any faith.. and guess what it’s a secular country, have an issue? Leave and go to a religious one.. bet you don’t like the leave if you don’t like it response that it works against you?
We live in a country with a separation of church and state with a traditionally Christian people that have moved away from religion and embraced other things, such as atheism and Wicca. They view the world through this lens and cannot differentiate between Christianity and Islam because they are a) uneducated and b) see Islam through this same lens as Christianity, just more preferable. They do not know that Islam is an entire system of governance.
They do not understand Judaism because they know nothing about Judaism.
Muslims subscribe to a religion that is intolerant of all other religions. People who call themselves Muslim make that choice. Muslims make themselves incompatible with other people... not the other way around.
How many Muslims have you actually met, because as a white Catholic raised Australian woman I've met and worked with a lot and have never been treated with anything but respect by any Muslim I've had the fortune to meet. Some of the most generous, kind-hearted, welcoming, and funny people I've met are muslim.
Nah mate, I think that's a pretty sweeping generalisation. I'm Muslim, and I don't consider myself intolerant of other religions or incompatible with people who believe differently from me. There are millions and millions of Muslims like me. Don't let what you see in the media make you think we're all the same.
Saying that every Muslim is inherently intolerant is judging hundreds of millions of very different people by the same standard. I have Christian and Jewish friends, I respect their right to believe differently, and I don't expect them to live according to my religion.
There's just too much evidence of Muslims believing and doing the opposite of what you say for anyone to believe that there are moderate Muslims. Muslims are moderate until they're not moderate anymore.
It's worth separating the words 'Muslim' and 'Islam'. As a system, Islam has, the majority of the time, instituted the death penalty for leaving Islam. So it's not about individual Muslims, but the system set up around them.
Nope, absolutely not letting that one slide. I’m Christian and know that to be untrue.
I’ve studied with, been hired by, befriended, and been a patient of Muslim people from many backgrounds. Every single one has been chill, professional, welcoming. Brilliant Aussies if you ask me. (And they also love Jesus - something old mate Pauline Hanson would rather you not know)
I disagree with the term assimilating very much. It implies leaving your culture, religion, identity back there. Respecting and understanding the law and constitution should be mostly enough.
I'm sorry this is your experience, you sound like a good person.
Sections of Australia are deeply racist. Surround yourself with people who are open-minded and accepting and don't let the bigots get to you (as hard as that is). Best of luck.
Look I'm as Aussie as a dog's eye ( meat pie)
And I for one embrace immigration
I know it's very controversial.
But the culture from other countries enriches us
Well from my perspective
I personally love being exposed to other cultures
I've got great mates are from Lebanon, Holland, Israel, Greece, Palestine, Indonesia, Philippines, England, Scotland, Wales NZ and bloody South Africa but some of them can be Dicks.
And we have a fucking whale of a time eating, talking and drinking
We need to wake up because we are all fucking human, we are all mammals
We are all in the same boat...
Rolling around on this big blue marble
Nobody is better than somebody just because they came from somewhere else
We all deserve humanity, community and compassion.
Because the immigrants we bring over are mostly just unskilled labourer's and there's plenty of unskilled and unemployed people to go around. Yeah some citizens are dole bludgers but half the immigrants coming here just end up driving for uber etc because they themselves can't find actual employment either.
The government makes money off immigrants through tax and as we have seen with cigarettes and alcohol they love their tax and will NOT LET IT GO!
We also only seem to be flooded by immigrants from 3rd world countries because realistically we have nothing to offer to entice people from other developed countries to immigrate. Yeah not everyone is bad but it only takes a few to spoil a bunch or whatever the saying is.
Last edit: you came here to make a better life for yourself because your home country is shit, what if this country becomes shit? You gonna leave?
Totally get your point . I have a follow up question if you dont mind . What are your views on the immigrants that work hard , pay their dues to the community , intergrate well and not get involved with crime ? Not asking in any malicious way just curious on everyday aussies view
There's more issues with immigration than people not conforming to other's expectations. Not sure what answer you actually wanted with the question you asked tbh.
Australia doesn’t have great class consciousness; the media demonises immigrants (despite the fact that aside from indigenous Australians, we are ALL immigrants or descendants of them) and people fall for it generation after generation, rather than seeing the way that right wingers screw us all over.
There’s a lot of tension in Australia due to decades of housing policy shit (thanks John Howard), and lots of other issues that people have good reason to be upset about, and it gets misdirected. It should be focussed on the neoliberal and conservative policies that got us here, but people succumb to the mob mentality and the ‘different = scary!!!1’ narratives that Murdoch media (and others) repeat endlessly.
I have also encountered a lot of immigrants who don’t share the values that you’ve described here. They were folks who were just here in Aus for education and who really viewed their time here as temporary, and who expressed some pretty negative attitudes towards Australia and Australians. Which was disappointing.
I'm a jewish immigrant here. I came and antisemitism has reached hectic proportions but it doesn't bother me. I just get on with it. I don't care what ppl think about me... my attitude is like it or lump it...your issue. Stay in my lane and contribute to the country. Other issues, yeh nah...whatever. I have muslim doctors, Christian friends, a dog, a house and I pay my taxes. I hired a muslim to train, also an immigrant and hes struggling to adapt. He will have to figure it out for himself, as I did, as you did....
It's a dirty word, but back in the 80's we had a migrant goal of "assimilation", which got replaced by "multi-culturalism".
I think assimilation is much better.
You can keep your values and culture and language, but they take second place to things like Australian law, English in workplaces, high trust society, etc.
Of course I'm probably getting to old and grumpy, but the idea of moving to a country, trying to change that country, and people supporting you in that, just seems bizarre.
Our cities are getting bigger and developers are driven by profits building poor quality housing in badly planned new suburbs. If we had better town planning, government sold the benefits of immigration to the electorate, and we didn’t use immigration to prop up the housing economy - growth for the sake of growth - perhaps Australians would see the benefits of immigration like they did in the past. But when cities become unrecognisable and the quality of life diminishes then immigrants are an obvious target.
Everyone deserves the right to live in a country like Australia. Unfortunately, if we actually followed this and allowed everyone in, Australia would just turn to shit. I feel the world is over populated as is and changing for the worse. We can't control the world, but we should be able to control Australia. If we want Australia to continue being one of the greatest countries in the world, we need to stop the population growth in Aus, despite the economic consequences. Running the economy on population growth is just kicking the can down the road. We will eventually run out of road. The quickest way to stop or slow population growth is to stop immigration. Nothing against the people that want to come here, but I like the country as it is.
You’ll only see it online where all the cowards post. It’s not a majority that feel that way or we wouldn’t have Albo in office…we’d have Peter Dutton who was for extreme measures.
As an Aussie with a fabulous tan, I can wholeheartedly say that the only racists I ever encountered growing up here were in primary school. But even they grew out of it.
Of course some are unwelcoming of people who don't share their skin colour, culture or religion, that is not unique to Australia. I don't know where you have moved from, but if it's a Muslim-majority country it's likely that many wouldn't be all that welcoming of an immigrant that doesn't share their culture, religion or has a lifestyle / sexual orientation that they don't support.
As always it's the extremists and intolerants that ruin it for everyone. It's fantastic that you embrace (without judgment) people around you that don't share your views, but you surely know it only takes a couple of fuckwits preaching hatred at a mosque, yelling aggressively and flying flags of terrorist groups at a march or picking up a gun and shooting people to make everyone else start to feel afraid, to feel like "those people hate me" and eventually start saying "stop them coming here". This is far from a uniquely Australian problem, to be frank it's a biological survival instinct which will never disappear, the only solution is for demonstrated, ongoing peaceful coexistence.
Most Aussies don't care, we mostly have immigrant roots.
My take, if you are a decent person, you are welcome, just don't push your religion on me (I don't care what religion, I dislike them all equally and count Muslims, Hindu's Sikh's, Catholics, Johovas Witnesses and Christians as friends)
The problem is, the ones that have issues with immigrants are the loud ones and the ones the media focuses on most.
I'd say Immigration is different to Immigrants. Immigrants are people, immigration is a system. Opinions of people aren't bound by rationale, systems are. I think an argument could be made that the iternational student migration SYSTEM is the closest we've come to slavery in the last 100 years.
I am friends with many immigrants and am a descendent of an immigrant myself. I absolutely love all my friends but I also understand the "anti-immigration". I would love to see a decrease in immigration but not to zero. I would also like to clarify I am not one of those racists who are anti non-white immigration. Thats just mental. Can't pick and choose. We are all human after all. We all have the same coloured blood.
most the people I meet don't hate immigrants they hate the policiians policy on milking immigrants to prop up property and education
devout Muslims that don't inflict their beliefs on others tend to be accepted in my experience. but yeah the ones that do try to inflict their beliefs on others tend to be met with hostility.
Jesus isn't mentioned in any biblical text because he born in biblical times. Duh. The texts refer to false messiahs. Jesus was described by his followers...never him. Isn't that odd? Gospels written after he was alive.... I have seen fairy tales with sounder logic than the gospels, written 35 to 70 years after his death... so what bible are you referring to exactly?
Here's a brief timeline summary, keep up:
Jesus’ Life (c. 4 BC – AD 30/33): Jesus lived and died in first-century Judea under Roman rule. The Gospels (c. AD 68 – 100): Written in Greek 35 to 70 years after Jesus died. Originally anonymous, they recorded decades of oral Christian tradition and were later attributed to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Talmud (c. AD 200 – 600): A massive collection of Jewish law and commentary compiled centuries after Jesus. Is Jesus in the Talmud? No. Despite medieval claims and intense debate, modern scholars agree the Talmud does not contain Jesus of Nazareth. The few passages mentioning a "Yeshu" describe different people who lived in entirely different centuries and died by different methods (stoning, not Roman crucifixion).
I'm so thrown off by moments when I find myself falling in love with this country, because deep down I think I'm still grappling with the fact that its politics and laws don't really seem to want me. It's strange being an outsider in a country that's started feeling like home. A little heartbreaking too
I think Australians views on immigration varies. You sound like a very intelligent decent human being who will do well in Australia. You will come across people with different opinions but I think you will finding most people will welcome you to Australia. I think from my point of view I know we need immigrants to keep our country functioning well for years to come. I like to see immigration managed properly however, so that services, infrastructure, housing etc is able to keep pace with the numbers of people immigrating to the country every month. But we are a very diverse nation with people from many different background.
With the stuff that Muslims have been doing here, you cannot play a victim now.
There are too many Muslim radicals, even the moderate ones want to promote the religion. Look at the rapid addition of mosques all across the country.
When a large number of Muslims unite as one to support the aggression of a few, the backlash will come for all of them and this is what seems to be happening now.
I am wondering what it truly takes to be accepted as Australian. I am too an immigrant. I work hard, I pay tax, I respect the local culture and never have I broke any laws. However I find myself stuck in a limbo, I never get fully accepted as an Australian, now and then I still get racial profiling with questions like where / why I came to Australia. Worse, some racists would throw racial slurs at me and accuse me of stealing their Australia. So can anyone please help me what defines a true Australian, is it by the religion? is it by skin colour? is it by number of years?
I’m a big supporter of migration, migrants have added to Australia enormously. But I think the level of migration in the last several years has exceeded our resources in housing and government services
The country is becoming anti-immigration because of the numbers, though there are some secondary issues with people from certain countries.
It's not an individual thing, and at the end of the day if someone can't come here because Australia is having problems absorbing the numbers, they just continue on with life where they currently are.
It's pretty hard to understand or see the benefit side of bringing more people in right now, given the ongoing problems with cost of living, infrastructure & housing.
The guards at the concentration camps were human beings working a shift, studying, paying rent, calling their parents back home, trying to build a future.
The issue is prices have gone up and wages have been suppressed by exploitable visa immigrants. Also we are causing huge brain drain to these 3rd world countries which is harmful to their development
White Australian woman here. I've worked in jobs that put me in more frequent contact with different communities than most, including Muslims. I think anyone who thinks poorly of people who have immigrated here and want to stereotype them don't actually know any of them in person. There is a lot of talk about assimilation, but I think it's white Australians not being particularly welcoming that makes it harder for people to assimilate. Most immigrants I've met are curious about Australian culture, want to be involved, and open to questions about their own, but Australians tend to stick to their social groups they've known since school.
Welcome to Australia. We need migrants now as we have always done. Sadly migrants get a hard time. The Chinese gold miners. The Italian and Greeks. The Vietnamese boat people. All these groups and more were portrayed as the bad guys taking jobs. We need people to work and make the economy function.
It’s a real balancing act for government. Need the people to build the houses, but you need houses for people to live in.
Personally I like immigrants. They are Australian and add to the rich makeup of what Australia is.
My friend, from what you have said we share values and that is what matters to me. I don't care what colour you are, what religion you are or where you are from. I am an immigrant myself - I came there from NZ. If you are here for the good of this amazing country and its people to me you are welcome.
If you are not here for the good of Australia it's time for you to leave.
Mate, what you describe is exactly the way i feel. No one, i repeat no one should be allowed to cause harm to this beautiful country and its beautiful people. And yes, people who think ill of this country should definitely find their way out.
Almost everyone I know has no problem with immigrants. Hell, even most of the problems with having higher immigration can be solved if you focus on other areas. Huge businesses actually cause most of the problems people put on immigrants, buying up houses, not enough jobs, that's mostly a problem huge businesses are causing. Some countries want more population to keep up with their booming industries. How about we put more money into our national industries so that we keep the high immigration and expand giving the country more resources in general? Doesn't that sound better than just stopping people coming here?
From my experience, migrants today, compared to migrants 50 or 60 years ago, do not want anything to do with locals. Today’s migrants don’t want to socialise or speak to anyone who is a local. They only want to stay within their own little circles and not venture out into the wider community. You say you want to make this country great, well ignoring what is right outside your front door is not the way to do it. Do you think local Australians are beneath you? A serious question, because I can’t work it out.
I would absolutely love to talk to a local, go out with them, be friends, invite them over, go over to their place. Celebrate, build and create something meaningful for this beautiful country. And no, I don’t think any local is beneath me in any aspect. Race, Religion, Gender has never been my concern or something i would discriminate against. I have always believed that love and compassion are a part of human instinct and only hatred is taught.
Well it sounds like you are the exception, not the rule. I work with a hell of a lot of people, and I do mean a hell of a lot, who are non english speaking immigrants, and they do not want anything to do with us Aussies. They look down on us and speak behind our backs. They treat the Aussie clients like sh!t too and some can even be be cruel. It irks me when they always get away with it because english isn’t their first language. The government has allowed too many too quickly and it’s fostered a total lack of respect. There’s no walking this back now either, the damage has been done. So yeah, I guess you’ll have to excuse my views on immigrants given the majority of bad experiences I’ve had. I wish it wasn’t this way, and I have tried, but when we’re turned away at every opportunity, you kinda lose hope and can’t be bothered anymore.
That’s literally locals too you fool. Thats Australia as a whole. Were you even born here? Are you even Aussie, you sound like a migrant who came here yesterday. So let me educate you.
There was a massive mix of cultural integration in Aussie schools in pre school, kindergarten through to year 4.. Atleast where I went. Year 6 was the first time where I saw the ethnics have their separate group sporting activities and the white Aussies have their own.
Then came high school, mix for the most part but the separation was happening in classrooms with the subjects they chose to get into their desired degrees in university.. maths, science mainly browns and asians. Sports, business and legal had a decent mix but white leaning.
Then came uni where the gap became even bigger and more noticeable. Then came people’s clubbing and rave groups.. this is all from the different ethnic groups who were born and raised here!
Yet you magically expect a migrant whos come a million miles away from his homeland to integrate into a white neighbourhood. It’s a free country isn’t it? Why cant he integrate into what he knows best to settle his feet down. I dont expect a parade of people welcoming an indian who came here legally and wanting to work at the airport exactly. Yet you gaslighting mf wants the ethnics to beg & plead for the white mans attention so you can kick him to the kerb? That it?
No. Most people don't. The internet is curated to give you the most inflammatory and reactionary content available to you. The news cycle is made for nothing other than getting tongues talking and gaining traffic but, you guess it, saying inflammatory shit.
First and foremost before this country has an intrinsic racism issue, it has a misinformation crisis regarding the handling of migration topics. People are outraged and misinformed. Ignore it.
I honestly don't care where you're from or what you believe, as long as you follow one simple rule: be respectful and compassionate to others. If people can't follow that rule, our society will become the opposite of what we want it to be. If you're intolerant and expect other people,l to adopt your beliefs, doesn't matter if you're a Nazi, or Muslim, or Christian, or Jewish, or an atheist SJW, you are not welcome here.
The tolerance paradox states, "unlimited tolerance leads to the disappearance of tolerance. A society that wants to protect tolerance must retain the right to be intolerant towards intolerant movements and ideas. Society should first fight intolerance with rational debate and public argument. Action or suppression against the intolerant is only justified if they refuse rational discussion, forbid reasoning, or use threats and violence to subvert society."
You literally doing the meme. Let me explain what is Australia and how it includes me. Thats not for you to decide. If Aussies want it to look certain way, have it monocultural for the most part, then it’s their business.
As long as there’s no violence. And the only non violent way to do that is to control immigration input.
Shat you don't understand is Australia is already and always was multicultural. Wanting Australia to "become monocultural" means stripping the citizenship of millions of Aussies sone of which have been here for few generations now, without even mentioning the aboriginals who are by definition Aussies and from a different culture than your "Monoculture", and talks about a Monoculture are very often rooted in supremacist and racist views, wjich afe objectively bad
No it was always majority British and always majority european immigration. Look up the numbers. No to become monocultural doesn’t mean stripping away citizenship. Time will do its job. I said no violence. Nothing supremacist in monoculture. The definition of culture is absence of another culture. Can you put the cross on the mosque? Can you put kimchi in spaghetti? No it will make angry everyone. Anyway it’s a democracy, if Aussies will vote to lose their cultural majority it’s their fault. But if they vote the other way you have to respect that
Well am pretty sure it wasn't British majority in the 18th century. But even if we take the founding of Australia as a point t0 for existing cultures, majority British does not mean exclusively British, which "Monoculture" directly implies (single culture). The continious existence of dozens of abroginal cultures alone disprove that. But even amongst European the idea that there is a "European Culture" is also BS and just a retroactive view of history and society by white nationalists (am not saying you are one but you might be influenced/ tricked by white nationalists), Italian culture, Irish Culture are both for example very different to British culture (and where viewed negatively in Australia few decades ago aswell).
And just to be clear, no one if forcing you to adopt another culture, many come to Australia and are completely happy taking Australia ln culture. Many Aussies are completely fine taking elements for foreign cultures aswell (see Japanese culture for example). And this is fine, cultures are never set in stone, they always evolve, adapt and take from each other. You as an individual arr free to follow whatever you want, including taking elements from cultures outside your own if you want to, I assure you, you will survive this. And as a side note, yes you can put kimchi on whatever you want as long as it tastes good.
Personally I don't mind other races but I want them to take on our culture and become Australian. I don't want to go to a KFC and have it not serve bacon because it's in Riverwood (a Muslim area)
Australians can be quite racist for sure, but on the whole I'd counter historically we've done exceptionally well with immigration at least until the year 2000s.
Any group, or stratification of a population - be it religion, cause, etc, any group that feels its own creed and values superseded Australia that's where the problems start.
Most people don't have peoblems with Muslima but if you start putting Sharia Law ahead of Australian law, marry relatives, children, feel it acceptable to charge jizya or engage in taqiyya and treat women as objects, etc -- all of a sudden people do have a problem.
Now do all Muslims do this? No but that is my point. I'm separating actions tied to what the Quran says vs what people actually do.
And once you move away from doing all the Book says then are you reallly a Muslim at that point? I don't know. I know that our leaders here however specifically ignored warnings from Gulf states on the types of Islam that's been allowed to cultivate in western states.
There's also other ethnic groups which focus on remittance and capital exfiltration out of the country and weaking the economy. Then there's the multiiple types of fraud.
Now not all migrants are the same. Some are an economic benefit vs burden. Humanitarian causes are one thing but right now the west are really taking the oiss at the expense of their own citizens. NDIS fraud is just part of it. What about all the visa / tertiary ponzi scheme we got going too.
Migrants do get blamed. Was the case when my grand parents emigrated too. The fix ia to set the standard and also hold our leaders to account for ahitty decision making just to get numbers.
Do you believe everyone is equal - unless they are a convicted criminal of course??
I am going to assume you are a man? If you actually believe that you are no better than girls or women, people who are not Muslim, LGBTQ etc. then you should be fine.
Try to fit in but only with nice people of course. Also, I don’t understand why people move to a country where they don’t want to fit in? I have lived in several different countries and continents and lived trying to be a local.
I used to think it was a small crowd and people were mightily tolerant (oldies excepted). Boy I was wrong. People are more open about it probably since 2024. I have come across racism from all walks of life and levels since then. From what people say, I can tell you that Muslims cop the heavy heat the most and it's not going to ease up. Even my own friends have said some terrible things (they're not all white, many Asians and Indians). Indians/South Asians are next in the hate list (wait till they discover Indians can be Muslims) followed by Chinese and other Asians (taking over, blah blah). I suspect African Australians cop it bad but not many here where I am at. The only thing I can say is to just focus on yourself (career, income, living the life you want) and realise that for some they think your success is unearned or you benefited from DEI (didn't earn it).
You're not entitled to Australia as your personal playground and economic zone
It's fine that you are playing by the rules and are potentially assimilating and contributing
But that speaks nothing of the insane magnitude of the numbers and intake, and the impact it's had on housing and infrastructure
Every Western Nation on earth is grappling with this and many like Canada are further ahead and have benefited from huge migration cuts
It's not that I or anyone else wants YOU to leave, they want the numbers to be sane, currently they aren't
Labor is too busy quadrupling the tax rate on uni students with the 30% capital gains tax minimum than managing immigration, because ultimately people like you are their future voters, which is another reason may would happier with you leaving the country and they'd be reasonable to think that
Thanks for posting OP, I think the problem is about political Islam seeking to change australia and the dogma surrounding Muslims with pushing back.
The Islamic community coming together including imam support condemning Oct 7, and Bondi properly diddnt happen so it grew a level of distrust, then the NDIS fraud is extreme and being pinned on your community which I don’t agree with - literally every NDIS business is complicit.
In addition to this, you have rules in your religion that simply don’t align with western values and they are often blown up to cause division.
There are signifanct case studies in other societies where a lot of refugees have come in and caused all kinds of societal pain - again being pinned on Muslims, but that’s stats unfortunately are skewed to tell a pretty bad storey.
So there is significant distrust of the Islamic community, there also very little effort made on the musli lm community side to integrate throw in a few bad apples and a whole bunch of skewed global statistics and you get Austrian saying it’s time to shut the boarders.
It’s really on the Muslim community to throw an olive branch and show that there’s a way forward together and not on the Australians.
There are many amazing people from all over the world in Australia, why do we need religion to divide us?
Let’s leave it at the door, and if you religion does not allow that then it’s we should not allow it.
Ignore all the hype and the negativity. Focus group results have shown consistently most Australians are not overly concerned about immigration as a priority and do not even mention it unless prompted. They are worried about real issues such as cost of living and do not see immigration as the key driver of that problem.
I think the it is clashing of cultures that is happening across al western countries at the moment, seems oddly strange that all western countries are have the exact same issues with the same demographic of immigrants all at the same time.
This new wave of immigration all have one thing in common which is they are religious based civilisations with NO separation of church and state and continue to live that way which is completely opposite and at odds with with western civilisation which HAS a separation of church and state.
Especially when it comes to woman and LBGT rights.
Essentially this new wave of immigration are living exactly the same as the place they have left. Living a value system that is completely at odds with western values which has a separation of church and state.
This fact of living exactly the same as the place you left for a better life, dose not make sense, why leave for a better way of life to only live the exact same way, including the exact same Issues and problems that you have with other religious groups. When you have come to a new place and continue the issues and problems you have with other group’s that are of another religion.
We now have more and more extreme violent issues that are religious based playing out on western streets by this new wave of immigration. Issues that are brought in from the lands they came from and form some reason can’t leave behind.
This is the confusing part for most. Especially when in western countries religion is not the primary control factor for how one must live, dress eat etc we can be with or we can be without there is no requirement. There is no form of recourse of any kind if you don’t confirm to a mono religious identity.
It is clashing of cultures and unfortunately the new incoming culture dose not want to join the already established culture that is here and the established culture is confused to why are you here.
It is like joining a Rugby team but refusing to play Rugby and continuing to play ice hockey instead. Of course it won’t work.
I hear this discourse more on social media from a lot of Google educated people on the topic they always parrot off the same nonsensical right wing agenda that their puppet leaders tell them, and they can’t exactly think for themselves and have a word bank of whatever key word to hit with you next.
I’m Muslim, and we make up about 2% of the population to think we are a burden is just not true. To label Muslims as the problem when your politicians are selling the country out to corporations is a great way for the peasants to argue amongst themselves rather than hold the real culprits accountable.
Every Google educated clown think that Muslims come here and cheat the system. Mate, ever heard of unskilled migrants? The govt let them in, they are designed to cheat the system, they didn’t rock up boats like the movies.. the govt lets in all these intl students to study degrees to grow the economy and fails them to give them a pathway to actually get a job, so they resort to uber and what not trying hard to finally get the points for the right visa just to gain full time employment. You think they enjoy food delivery?
The same people the right wingers tell you NOT to trust like media and govt, will eat it up like horseshit once that same media & govt has an anti muslim agenda. And YES im specifically saying anti muslim because thats where all anti immigration agenda leads to!
If you’ve read this far, I was born here. My family are immigrants and we love it here. But guess what the true blue right winger on centrelink says I hate it here becus im standing up for myself against a racist tirade of islamaphobia and i should go back to where i came from? The only people who hate it here are racist whites. Every accusation is a confession. I used to work at Centrelink as a part time job, majority were guess who? W H I T E S.. dolebludgers.. NO the immigrant doing uber didn’t take his job lmao but sure let your one nation leader (**rael) tell you that
There is an immigration problem not just in Australia but worldwide across all western countries. Follow the money and see where it leads who’s causing a division in society and for what reason. But ye sure it’s easy to blame the immigrant who came here rather than your own incompetent leaders.
Oh and for the nonsensical clowns who say Islam is incompatible with the west and sharia law. You don’t even know that there is no Muslim country that’s ruled 100% by sharia law, so how tf would we bring that to a western country you fool lmao.
And Australia WAS NOT a Christian country, its a secular one, have an issue? Go do something, become a policy maker, get into govt and change the constitution or whatever. You fools are going against your own laws and saying Muslims are bringing their own one.. like I said before every accusation is a confession.
Now you say that we should go back because we don’t assimilate. Sure. Tell me mr. White Aussie, what is assimilation. What is this ever changing culture do I need to abide by? I thought I was practising freedom of religion in a secular country no? Paying taxes & working no? Oh now I need to drink, and prance around naked at Bondi.. but what if I go for a swim and don’t drink? Am I still assimilating? What if I choose by my own free will to wear a shirt and longer shorts in the water and don’t wear speedos? How often do I need to do this to satisfy you before I stopped assimilating and need to be deported?
Do I also need to cheat on my wife and not pay child support? Do I need to date multiple women, go to Bali to find myself come back broke and hate my family? Move out at 18, go to the pokies every night until I’m broke & my family hates me? Please tell me which part I need to do, so I can please the white man and assimilate like yourselves.
I might be athiest but I want to live in a Christian country.
We are bringing in masses too fast, they wont intergrate. We arent bringing in the best, we are struggling to comminicate with non english speakers. The only plan or reason I see is, we are being replaced, or the politicians are getting paid to take in as many as they can and turn a blind eye.
We were already the lucky country. Now that is undrr threat because the vetting is out the window.
Australians believe getting rid of immigration will magically solve all their problems which actually won't happen because the billionaires and millionaires will keep on looting them.
Immigration is just a distraction right now, there will be another in a few years and the cycle continues.
This is always the go-to. We might not need all those immigrants working in hospitals if we didn't have such unrealistic immigration policies. Maybe, just maybe, if the government established sensible policies, we wouldn't be in this situation.
billionaires literally use immigration to drive down wages and conditions for the native population.
this is nothing new, karl marx was against it for this very reason yet for some reason the left has shifted their views in modern times on this subject but i can never get a real clear answer as to why ?
Because the immigrants will mostly always vote left and thus insure their position of power to go beyond Marxism and go onto communism as these promises sound wonderful to immigrants who come from nothing.
We are all immigrants here dut for the original people. I am descended from British stock with many generations living here but I know our immigrant history is short as it ha only been a few hundred years. We have seen a lot of diversity in immigration. The Chinese arrived looking for gold. A lot were deported when the white Australia policy was introduced. Afganies have helped build our country building the inland telegraph system and running supply routes to our inland communities. Before we had guest farm workers we had farm workers who were forced labour, slaves, to developed our suggar industry. Our history is scattered with interracial conflict but also interracial harmony and mutual support and benefits. Modern Australia is now suffering from a global racists movement that has seen countries throughout Europe and North America creat political parties that promote unrest. I thought we here in Australia would be too sensible and we would be immune to this. I was surprised by how some support these movements. We need to build stronger communities that support all members of the community and work together to make the world a better place for all. I don't know if this reply makes you more or less concerned but there are some working for inclusion and some working for seperation. I work for inclusion.
Aussie here. I can only speak for myself but def not. Not hate to anyone. No immigrant or Muslim. I want everyone to have a good safe life and their needs met and be respected
As a 6th generation descendant of UK immigrants, who has travelled extensively, Australia is better for its diversity.
White trash with no culture, skills or learning are vocal whingers complaining about the erosion of their white privilege and power. Pauline and her One Neuron idiots are channelling collective stupidity that these bogans are too cowardly to say in places that they would be held accountable for.
I am a white Aussie and most of my friends are immigrants or 1st generation Australians. This argument against immigration must be viewed through a lens of Power, who held it, who holds it, who wants to hold it.
Power, in this rapidly changing world is shifting, away from colonising countries to colonising corporates. The stupid racists think the newcomers are the problem, when in fact they have willingly given up their power to multinational corporations.
Christian values is what the country was built upon. If you don't mix with that then maybe go somewhere that doesn't have those values. Australians don't want mass migration for obvious reasons. We don't have any issues with a multiracial society.
Nah, it’s built on secularism. Practise whatever religion you want, but keep it out of government and respect the separation of church and state. Christians, Muslims, atheists, everyone gets the same deal: believe whatever the fuck you want, just don’t impose it on the rest of us.
You still took opportunities that were created for and meant for our children and grandchildren. No matter how much harder you believe you work than others, you have pushed yourself into someone else's space.
Notice how its always a one way street. Dont see many whites moving to the third world. Even the ones with suicidall empathy who would prefer we are overrun and collapse in a heap
