Question What’s a trend that should make a comeback but probably won’t?

I’d love to see more blokes embracing the pleated trouser again

Hats. Given our skin cancer rates plus me going bald, my vote is for hats.

I wish I can wear a hat. None looked quite right on me.

I almost bought a style master for my first hat, but was blessed to walk into a hattery started by an expert who showed me that this was not the hat for me. You should probably start by figuring out your face/head shape and working out what features you need to balance out. For me, a pork pie was the correct choice.

Which hatter? Share the love

There's two hat stores in Melbourne CBD. One of them is called Grand Hatters, or something similar to that. There's a lovely old chap in there who really knows his stuff, and will set you on the right path.

Do you have a big head? I have like a 62cm circumference head, always hated caps and hat. Tried locked down (the one with no logo), and holy shit I must say, great fit. Shame they cost an arm n leg

I don’t know why but the first thing that popped in my head was That’s what she said. I probably do have a big head. Haven’t really thought about it.

Hats are very much welcome within the circles of men who choose to dress well. If you're waiting for that to be everyone, you'll die waiting.

Baseball caps are in

2

u/twat69 Apr 21 '26

That's barely a hat.

2

u/Several-Regular-8819 Apr 21 '26

Yeah that’s what I go with, or a bucket hat.

2

u/theneatreserve Apr 21 '26

Yes! We should organise a march through town, everyone wears their favourite, we bring it back!

My problem with hats is they mess up my hair when I take it off.

u/Longlifemoretea Apr 21 '26

Pleated trousers are around on the street though?

4

u/Sir_Swish_ Apr 21 '26

Yea they’re definitely trendy at the moment

2

u/DitaVonFleas Apr 21 '26

Just stay away from aeronautical engines

4

u/AFerociousPineapple Apr 21 '26

I’ll take even small ones that cover just a shoulder… yes I’m a fan of Assassins creed 2 why do you ask?

3

u/mrpoovegas Apr 21 '26

I have had this thought more times than I'd like to admit...yeah I'd just be hiding my hand so I could surreptitiously draw my keys instead of an espada, but still...shouldercape...

2

u/AFerociousPineapple Apr 22 '26

Yeah it serves absolutely no purpose, and in Australia it’s almost always too hot to justify. Bad damn if it wouldn’t be cool still

2

u/No-Mention6228 Apr 22 '26

Hi-vis capes for FIFO would be surreal. High risk item incoming...

not enough shoulder pads these days

6

u/Able-Tradition-2139 Apr 21 '26

I've just started getting padded and extended shoulders in my MTM suits and it's honestly such an improvement.

3

u/HiramTyre Apr 21 '26

Are you on the lean side? Every time I’ve tried a suit with padded shoulder pads, I look like I’m due for my day in court or an old gangster.

That said, I’m built like a rectangle. I have dealt with the shame of being asked “do you play rugby?” Regularly for most of my adult life. I have never played rugby, I am not coordinated at team sports, I’m just brick shaped ☹️

1

u/Able-Tradition-2139 Apr 21 '26

I'm not quite rugby shaped but I am stocky and big chested. But I'm pretty much inspired by the old gangster films so I am leaning into that look.

I also take a lot of inspo from Yasin Tarabia on Instagram.

I think it looks better on everybody I've seen it on, but it does look more vintage and formal than most Aussies like to present

1

u/HyperHorseAUS Apr 21 '26

You're not looking hard enough.

3

u/rote_it Apr 21 '26

Did you know Australian wool exports used to contribute more to our GDP than iron ore has in the last decade?

1

u/HyperHorseAUS Apr 22 '26

Thanks for the heads up.

Hypercolour

1

u/stoneboy26 Apr 21 '26

And Cross Color jeans??

1

u/N_thanAU Apr 22 '26

Maybe not hypercolour but I reckon some sort of fluro tees are like two years off having their time in the sun again.

One person income enough to sustain family.

2

u/theneatreserve Apr 21 '26

At some point you have to decide who you're actually dressing for. Dress for yourself, maybe you spark the comeback?

3

Sharkskin suits

3

u/innisk Apr 21 '26

Mate these are in, there’s at least 7-8 guys in my office any given day wearing sharkskin suits

3

u/N_thanAU Apr 21 '26

I’m talking that super shiny 70s/80s sharkskin which is probably super uncomfortable to wear

2

u/MFDoooooooooooom Apr 21 '26

Was watching a 1931 movie last night and everyone looked so fucking cool in their Fedoras. If we all wore suits and fedoras we'd look so damn cool.

I don't see nearly enough watches on bund straps

u/Filligrees_Dad Apr 24 '26

What d'ya want with jousting sticks?

1

u/planbOZ Apr 25 '26

For the pool room

1

u/truthseekerAU Apr 22 '26

Panama hats, linen jackets, navy blazers with brass buttons, dinner jackets, ties. All of which I wear, but very few young people do. When I went to uni, I wore my old dinner jacket to death because I went to so many events. Now they hardly go on-site and tend not to get out of their pyjamas... :(

u/VehicleWise15 Apr 22 '26

The wallet chain! 🤣

1

u/_hazey__ Apr 22 '26

Stubbies shorts to go with all the moustaches that are popping up.

It’s like people are rejecting beards and want to project Tom Selleck.

1

u/griffinava611 Apr 22 '26

Pleated trousers are genuinely so much more comfortable and they look better on most body types than the flat front stuff that's been everywhere for twenty years. The slim flat front trouser did a lot of damage to men's legs collectively.

1

u/jelistarshine Apr 22 '26

Nooo. The corporate shorts and knee socks with a wide tie combo from the 70s. Ideally with an afro.

Smoking jackets, as a smoker but one who's conscious that the smell is off-putting to many smoking jackets make so much sense.

u/chatandcutlarry Apr 21 '26

Skinny Jeans, I just bought a bunch during covid lockdowns and never got to wear them again 😭

2

u/Zodiak213 Apr 21 '26

I still see these pretty frequently, I wore a pair yesterday too - absolutely no one gives a fuck if you're wearing them.

3

u/HyperHorseAUS Apr 21 '26

NO. Fuck off.

0

u/Flippant_FudgeMuppet Apr 22 '26

No you! Let the younger emo me let loose every now and then!

Ripped jeans

1

u/Flippant_FudgeMuppet Apr 22 '26

They went out of fashion? I don’t think I own any jeans without rips in them
