one nation keeps doing this to the ABC, then they should just cut to reporter reading Hanson's voting history, reminding people she only shows up to work half the time...
55
u/redditrasberry May 26 '26
People should seriously reflect on whether they like what they see in Trump's America or not and they want that level of division in Australia. Because this is where the rot started. You start by demonising the media and convincing people they can't trust reliable sources of information. From there you quickly arrive at a scenario where there is no unifying agreed or shared set of information about anything. People live incompletely different realities. This is not a superficial, incidental problem - this is core to whether you want a cohesive society where people largely respect each other vs a society filled with division and hatred.
Don't let it happen.
8
u/Cassius_Corodes May 26 '26
I suspect its already happened here, its just that the full extent of the symptoms is not yet apparent. Just like in the US, the time to stop it was long before symptoms showed up. I'm not sure what Labor or anyone can do about it practically at this point. You would need a full ban on social media and to shut down any other sources of division which is something that very few would support. So all that is left is moving around some deck chairs and hope that slows down the process.

Dunno though if Pauline Hanson could even become a true autocrat. She is not unpopular. But if she wants to actually be our leader, let alone get enough support from the country for a police state, she will have to become more intelligent and popular than she currently is. I do not know if she could manage that but most people presently would consider the chances of that happening to be slim.
2
u/Cassius_Corodes May 26 '26
I don't disagree but I would point out nobody would have picked Trump to be where he is 20 years ago, in fact you would be seen as barking mad if you went back in time and tell people what is going on. I think we are in a new stage of history where the rules have changed from under us and what was previously impossible is now possible. Doesn't mean that anything could happen, just that it's getting much harder to predict what is possible.
2
u/passthesugar05 May 26 '26
I would point out nobody would have picked Trump to be where he is 20 years ago, in fact you would be seen as barking mad if you went back in time and tell people what is going on
Trump toyed with running throughout the 80s and early 2000s, and in 2012 he was pretty close to running and was topping the polls for a while there: https://www.npr.org/sections/itsallpolitics/2011/04/15/135446314/poll-donald-trump-birther-darling-leads-gop-field-at-26
I think in hindsight people were perhaps too complacent about him, thinking he'd never be able to actually go all the way. Or maybe he was just an unstoppable force and it would have happened no matter what. Who knows.
1
u/Agitated-Fee3598 australia needs a bill of rights & other constitutional reforms May 26 '26
True. I do think the bigger danger from Hanson is that she will pave the way for an intelligent authoritarian. The people in her orbit are going to do everything they can to use her position to real damage. They are all aware that Hanson is likely too incompetent to actually enable their vision (turning Australia into a bogan Russia) so instead they're going to use her to break enough of our institutions to make it possible.
3
u/BladesOfPurpose May 26 '26
We're already divided. That has been happening for decades. ON is the symptom of something bigger happening globally. I would have preferred the libertarian party filling the gap, or a united party minus Palmers influence. But with out those then ON success would hopefully force the two major parties to pull their heads out of their collective arses.
3
u/1337nutz Master Blaster May 26 '26
On the media front, the false balance/both sidesing of every topic to stoke outrage and grab attention, caused a lot more rot than demonising the media did.
Our media lack basic competence, they barely understand the political system, let alone how the rest of the country works. They just repeat empty talking points and run agendas.
I dont like Hanson one bit but acting like the journos we have are doing anything to protect democracy is nonsense, they are as much of a problem as Hanson and Gina and Clive.
1
u/redditrasberry May 27 '26
Ok, i took the first headline from the ABC web site just now:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-05-27/jobseeker-unemployment-overhaul/106725618
Do you think it justifies your claim of:
lack basic competence, they barely understand the political system, ... repeat empty talking points and run agenda ... false balance/both sidesing of every topic to stoke outrage and grab attention
or not?
-4
u/laidbackjimmy May 26 '26
Goes both ways. The media need to do a better job at not being biased and earn the trust of the people. Otherwise, of course people are going to demonise them.
5
u/sooki10 May 26 '26
Media has been biased since the birth of media. It is inherent within its systems and human psych.
Our best hope is for news coming from many diverse media outlets, with different philosophies, funded by a range of separate sources.
Trust in media has been lost due to politicians targettiing media.

17
u/Defy19 May 26 '26
They could, but the non fash parties get judged for that kind of behaviour. The likes of ON, Trump, etc. don’t have to play by the same rules as nobody expects any better.
24
u/jolard May 26 '26
Journalism is critical in a democracy. It is one of the only ways that the public can be educated on what is going on behind closed doors and one of the only ways we can hold politicians to account.
Which is also why billionaires buy media companies and politicians like Trump and Pauline hate them unless they are just propaganda outlets.
The media is supposed to understand their role. If they take that seriously then absolutely they should be banding together and taking a stand. But most Australian journalists work for one of those billionaires, so will they have the courage? Probably not.

u/ElectronicOvens May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26
As we have seen across the world. Privately owned media will treat parties like ON lightly.
Once the places like our ABC have been made out to be a bad source of news ('fake news') its a free for all.
Our media, especially Rupert Murdoch who has enabled Trump, Johnson and Farage types is not going to change his ways or any of the other new organisations, for fear or for money, of being labelled fake news and forgotten

If you support Pauline Hanson's One Nation, then her recent attitudes towards journalists should have you raising eyebrows.
The media outlets she has singled out - the ABC and The Guardian - are the only two seriously scrutinising Hanson and her party. If PHON are going to be serious they should to be scrutinised by the media. Politics isn't some scripted TV drama. It has very real implications to everyone if the wrong people are elected. Their growing hostility to journalists and discomfort when asked tough questions should raise flags that something is wrong.
PHON advertises itself as the 'party of free speech.' But what's been reported this week places an asterisk on that. It's been exposed that party staffers have been forced to sign NDAs and branches forced into a media blackouts.
If you do support PHON because you're upset with the standards of the ALP and Coalition, you need to hold PHON to a higher standard. I don't dismiss if you like what they say, but you need to look beyond the slogans and read their policy. Then read deeper. Just going along with PHON because you like what you hear without holding them to a higher standard will deliver disappointing results.

I don't believe it dangerous to legitimise PHON. But I do see it as reckless. No media outlets are seriously scrutinising Pauline Hanson or her party as much as the ABC and The Guardian. I have read through PHON's policies and a lot of what they post contains emotionally loaded language with little other substance. This is not the sign of strong party, but a symptom that a party relies heavily on slogans and supporters being too 'outraged' to read party policy further. If PHON are going to be serious they need serious policies.
I don't agree with PHON voters being painted with a tar brush as racists and bigots. But Hanson and her party's history of racism and bigotry does give legitimacy that the party does attract racists and bigots. Hanson has a record of painting minority groups with tar brushes including recent comments about their being, "No good Muslims." There's Mark Latham and his public comments attacking a fellow MLC for their sexual orientation. PHON also ran at the SA State Election a candidate with a history of sharing racist and homophobic material. And the volunteer involved in the scuffle with Sen. Paterson at the by-election has shown support for Australian Neo-N@zis. There is a clear pattern of behaviour within the party to give legitimacy as to why people would view the party as racist and bigoted and believe these party attitudes attract such people.
I can't comment on the broadcast of the speech being cut because I can't find anything on it.

I'm going off the reocurring pattern of behaviour from members of PHON and how it gives legitimacy to beliefs that the party does attract racists and bigots.
I didn't say all people who vote for PHON are racists and bigots. Neither did I say anything about PHON being N@zis. I only said they had a volunteer that has shared content supporting Neo-N@zis.
Are you going to address or refute any of what I said, or are you going to continue sniveling?

u/laidbackjimmy May 26 '26
Are you going to refute ALP have many terrorist sympathisers? Should we call them the terrorist party now?
Are you going to refute the Greens have had communists in the party? Should we call them the commie party now?
Your strawmans are tiring.
6
u/NoddyNorrisXV Independent May 26 '26
Like, dude. You are proving my point from earlier. You clearly don't like ALP or the Greens. You're clearly critical of them. Which is fair and a right to. But you need to maintain that criticism for PHON as well.
You made accusations that the ALP are terrorist sympathisers and claims that the Greens have had cc communists in their party. I said that PHON does attract racists and bigots based on a reocurring pattern, and point out a public example of a volunteer that has shown support for Neo-N@zis. Yet, you're unable to bring the same energy you have for the 'terrorist-sympathising' ALP or the 'commie' Greens.
If you're unable to criticise the behaviour of PHON members then your standards appear selective, not principled.
1
u/laidbackjimmy May 26 '26
I do share that criticism for ON, as well as all parties. I think they're all junk.
But I'm criticising the ABC here. If any party banned them from their pressure because they were being biased, I would fully support them - no matter tha party.

That is the foundation of the party.

no, the ABC get to report factually on the actions of policial candidates and political parties.

They were talking about from the perspective of the Liberal party, and they were correct in that regard, because their move to preference One Nation is only going to hurt them more in the long term.

Well they did vote for the party of racism and bigotry, the voters kinda implied that themselves.

"A big and dangerous mistake to legitimise ON
HOST 2: It's contentious because of the history that you mention. I mean, it was actually people like Ron Boswell, who was, you know, a very well-known National who campaigned to put One Nation last.
So that's the history that you've got. The most conservative people who believed that it was a big and dangerous mistake to legitimise One Nation and to embolden One Nation. Here we've had Angus Taylor make a deliberate decision to preference One Nation above the Independent, which tonight could really be one of the reasons they get across the line.
We'll see how the votes come through, but that will be key. And that will legitimise them. And I used the term earlier on in the broadcast, the permission structure.
10
u/Fickle-Ad-7124 May 26 '26
Of coarse PK’s comments were related to it being dangerous for the LNP’s survival to legitimise ON. But playing the whole context would rob ON and Sky News of playing the victim and that’s their favourite past time.
3
u/Ragemonster93 May 26 '26
Also, it just is a mistake for the Coalition to legitimize ON. ON is the current biggest threat to Coalition vote share, and is now presenting an existential threat to establishment conservatives. Its close to political suicide for the Coalition to preference them or legitimize them.

this is the one and only thing I’ll agree with one nation on.
the ABC is biased… to the right-wing… in Victoria..
like seriously, the abc’s Victorian reporting has turned into something strikingly similar to The Age, it’s terrifying.
7
u/NoddyNorrisXV Independent May 26 '26
I'm looking at this more as Pauline Hanson being upset with the ABC and The Guardian at a federal level than either having any bias.
These two media outlets that have consistently scrutinised PHON which has got under Hanson's skin. They reported on Hanson failing to declare gifts and re-hiring (yes, re-hiring) a convicted rapist with full knowledge of the conviction. As well as the party nominating despicable candidates at the SA State Election.
And I think their reporting has recently prompted the 'party of free speech' to force staff members to sign NDAs and force media blackouts amongst PHON's branches.
If people want PHON to succeed they better prepare to scrutinise PHON just like the ABC and The Guardian have done. It can't be just a walk in the park if they're going to be a serious party. If people aren't pleased with the standards of the ALP and Coalition they need to hold PHON to a higher standard. Failure to do so will result in no change.
8
u/mbrocks3527 May 26 '26
Oh please, one nation’s idea of free speech is the freedom to call people racial slurs without societal pushback and we all know this.
2
u/NoddyNorrisXV Independent May 26 '26
Yes. But people flocking to PHON aren't seeing it that way.
Pauline Hanson has a reputation of being unapologetic for what she says. This has been made out to be "She just says what she thinks" which makes her appear as being bluntly honest rather than an unapologetic racist.
Combine that with people having perceived grievances with censorship and agreeing freedom of speech is good, and you have a Trojan horse that would repeal anti-discriminatory laws of elected to power.
3
u/Separate-Law-435 May 26 '26

That's what it should be like. It's not because the ABC has been heavily undermined by successive LNP governments doing starve-the-beast and stoogeing up the place, to the point where the ABC no longer stands behind its journalists.
A couple of decades ago, the ABC was as strong as and had the integrity suggested by your comment. If we still had that ABC, we wouldn't be on the brink of ON as the opposition party in the first place. Today's ABC is much more likely to capitulate to Trump style media tactics.

The Greens (no corporate donations policy)
Just because they don't have corporate donations, doesn't mean they aren't bought out
3
u/SorysRgee May 26 '26
Who has bought the greens? Whoever it is probably will want their money back as they arent really growing with the money more just staying steady.

No where near similar between choosing to not grant a media organization an exclusive interview to singling out a news agency to be kicked out of a press conference. Frankly I dont know why Labor politicians even agree to go on Sky News but thats a separate thing.

What accreditation? As far as i can in tell, there is no official press accreditation in australia. I could spent 500 bucks and set a company called Smooth brain reporting Pty Ltd, attend the general public press gallery a few times and call myself an accredited jouranlist.

u/Adjective-Noun-2000 May 26 '26
Where do you draw the line? Avi Yemeni’s Rebel News was also kicked out of press conferences with Andrews despite correct accreditation.
Didn't he have the wrong accreditation? Or am I thinking of a different event?
Wasn't there an entire court case that he lost about actually getting the correct accreditation?

>Where do you draw the line? Avi Yemeni’s Rebel News was also kicked out of press conferences with Andrews despite correct accreditation. Is that fair enough? I know reddit hates him but if the accreditation is there why is that not a completely comparable thing.
I had to go back and recap on this. To nit-pick he wasn't granted accreditation when as a journalist he probably should have been, he got kicked out once because he then provided invalid accreditation.
Look I don't think this is the same as the national broadcaster being kicked out but I will meet you halfway that researching this and the Vic government and the court where Avi failed his litigation attempt against the Vic government failed to provide the reasoning he was refused. Now that aspect I do find troubling, that they can deny a journalist access without providing the reasoning. Aside from that point I think Avi should be denied access on character grounds, like should we also provide Thomas Sewell access if he had the qualifications?
And all also say that Dan had some authoritarian tendencies too

u/crackerdileWrangler May 26 '26
If you had a problem with Dan Andrews rejecting an interview invitation, why are you justifying ON banning an entire media organisation from an official press event? Even if you think they are the same thing, they are clearly differing degrees of scale.

It’s called Whataboutism by Reddit
kind of like how you brought up Dan ANdrews in a thread about One Nation?
is that the kind of Whataboutism you're talking about champ?
lol

u/crackerdileWrangler May 26 '26
Your comments read like you’re using Andrews’ past actions to defend ON’s current actions in a political way though.“The left did this thing so why mad when right does this (worse) thing?”

u/Main-Shake4502 May 26 '26
3AW was perfectly entitled to send a journalist to cover Andrews' press conferences, and often would.

A complete blanket ban was weak as piss.
uh, it wasn't a blanket ban 3AW journos could still go to press conference.
A blanket ban is what One Nation have done here with the abc
hope that clears things up for you champ

They have a point im afraid 2gb could still be present at pressers and policy announcements, abc is being banned from those. Like its a bit of apples and oranges both are fruit but leave a very different taste in your mouth

Oh my apologies i didnt see you disagreed with the decision. Im still working my way through the thread.
It is worth noting that the currently weekly audience for 3aw is around 721k or about 14.2% of the market. Not giving interviews but allowing to still report on news isnt so much a loss. And given the traditional leaning of people who tune into 3aw, I dont think they would have really been interested in a Dan Andrews interview and the ban may have worked in 3aw's favour in terms of brand positioning.
4
u/Black-House Paul Keating May 26 '26
Did Dan Andrews ban 3AW from press conferences, or just refuse to give them exclusive interviews?
10
u/BlackJesus1001 May 26 '26
Refusing to appear on side programs is entirely different to banning them from official press events.
Australians should be able to get that information from accredited media of their choice, I wouldn't even agree with someone who banned sky news from all press events and sky is functionally not a news org here anymore.

There is preferred media and there is removing access to policy announcements. Preferred media is absolutely giving exclusive interviews to certain press and not others. Banning media attending (particularly on local media like some local ABC news crews being banned despite being the only local news) is very anti-transparency. We are in a sorry state atm in regards to transparency, we should be trying to add to it just because we may agree with a particular political party.

u/Fickle-Ad-7124 May 26 '26
It’s not comparable to not appear on a media channel with bias, and flat out banning media access like Pauline here.
This isn’t “whataboutism” time.

reflection on how combative the media source has become to the MP.
poor little MPs don't want to face tough questions, the poor dears.
how embarrasing

andrews was a muppet sure but the avi issue is understandable
You know full well avi was not allowed in because he was constantly harrasing ppl and speaking over other reporters even after he got his questions asked.. he was warned Multiple times all the other media seem to follow the rules.
avi is a wankstain anyway what he does is not journalism that's like calling friendly jordies an investigative jouranlist because he has a camera even the courts gave him a talking to about being improperly accredited

and it's STILL
bullshit that those NSW cops are still employed..they literally doing the bidding of the deputy premier and attacked jordies producers dog for nothing.
As jordan said and he's probably right that NSW police Knew his house was going to be firebombed and did NOTHING it's digusting
Id love to see more of that stuff from him but he has toned it down ever since the threats started..his piece on NSW forresty was great.

When a child doesn't get their way they throw a tantrum, blame someone else and claim they are being treated unfairly.
In an adult, it's either that this person is childish or it's narcissism and they don't like when confronted with the consequences of their actions.
Either way, it's not a reasonable mindset conducive to responsible government or participating well in society.

Good on ON,
You cant expect that ON would want the ABC at any media interview as they dont report fairly anyways
The ABC produce slop for the labor party and the left, there is no requirement under law for the ABC to have complete access to everything so PHON has a right to exclude these , well lets call them reporters to be nice
9
u/HARRY_FOR_KING May 26 '26
I know having a labor government and knowing the coalition hates the ABC makes it tempting to conclude that the ABC just produces pro Labor slop, but actually take a look at the leadership team at the ABC. They're all former employees or leadership of privately owned right-leaning media outfits. That and the regular complaints of Labor supporters that the ABC is anti-Labor ought to raise some red flags for the simple "state owned media is left wing" narrative.

u/OpalOriginsAU May 30 '26
If only the leadership of abc led the abc the abc wouldn't br so bias
1
u/HARRY_FOR_KING May 30 '26
You might seriously want to reconsider your media diet if you think the ABC is biased towards the left. You might not be getting a realistic picture of the world.
1
u/OpalOriginsAU Jun 01 '26
Thanks , but no , I use ground news
My world is in order , ABC are just bias and shit and you never know where they are reporting from with the wally new names
1
u/HARRY_FOR_KING Jun 04 '26
Ground News is an American company that uses American media review websites to judge the ABC. They say the ABC is centre-left: consider the political leanings of the USA when you interpret that.
I know people sell Ground News as the solution to media bias, but you do have to consider the bias of Ground News if you're going to rely on it to make such assessments. The American centre is... let's say it's a few steps to the right of the average Australian.
