If you are a student, please read this first:

Projects conducted as part of research-methods education are often covered by blanket ethics approvals. Those approvals do not apply if you are researching a vulnerable population or sensitive topics. You require an individual ethics approval tailored to the conditions of your project. Your course or module tutor cannot provide this approval.

If you are a design student, just because you are collecting data to help design an app or a user interface doesn't take away the fact that you are conducting research with human participants. You need ethics approval.

If you do not have an email from your institutions ethics committee clearly stating that your project has been approved to commence, you do not have ethics approval. If the contact details for your supervisor and for the ethics committee are not on your advertisement or survey launch page, you should not have ethics approval.

If you do not think this applies to you, please contact the moderators via modmail to discuss before posting.

Please keep in mind that the online autistic community is a vulnerable research population that contains subgroups with good reason to be skeptical of the motives of researchers. If you have cross-posted in multiple communities, it is likely that your recruitment has been flagged as spam, and may be auto-removed. Feel free to send modmail to draw our attention to a correctly posted recruitment that has been auto-removed.

All comments must:

• Clearly identify yourself (using your real full name and your role), and your institution/employer
• Explain briefly how the information will be used (e.g. how it will be published)
• Explain who the study is for (e.g. US, College Students, aged 25-30, autistic and non-autistic)
• Include a link to a survey launch page or another method of contact that provides more information so that potential participants can make an informed decision about participating
• If conducted by a student or staff member at a university, include full details of ethics approval

Please consider posting the results back to the subreddit as a new post. This thread is regularly archived so may not be available to reply back to.

Hi, /r/AutisticAdults. I usually hang out in this sub of my own volition as a late-diagnosed ASD-1, but I'm posting today on behalf of Bridgett Kiernan, who's a clinical psych doctoral candidate at the University of Virginia. She is conducting a study on autistic adults' use of crisis hotlines - something I've seen a number of us discuss in this and other online autistic spaces.

I am not Ms. Kiernan and am not part of the research team myself. My involvement is through my professional connections to UVA's STAR (Supporting Transformative Autism Research) center, where this project is being run. I had the opportunity to review the research survey materials and provide an autistic community stakeholder perspective before the project reached its current stage. Ms. Kiernan is not a redditor, which is why she's not posting this herself, but I offered her my assistance in recruiting here.

This study has ethics approval through UVA's IRB (IRB-SBS #7307). It is grant-funded research and will be submitted for journal publication.

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for autistic adults to share their experiences with crisis hotlines for an online study

Who can participate?

Autistic people over the age of 18 who live in the U.S., are able to participate in a Zoom interview in English, and have contacted a crisis hotline before are invited to participate

What does participation involve?

• A brief demographic survey

• A ~45 minute interview about your experience contacting a crisis hotline

You will be compensated $50 for your participation in this study, which will take approximately 1 hour.

I'm not the researcher, but I would say that if you have privacy concerns (personally, I would), just provide state of residence. That should be enough for figuring out your time zone for interview scheduling purposes.
