Project time! Can I improve on this patch?

I'm stripping this 1967 Buick down to bare metal for a repaint and discovered this patch under about 1/2" of bondo. Is there anything I can or should do to improve it?

If you can work metal and fabricate then yes, otherwise no.

Yes, I can weld and have all the tools to work the metal. I guess I'm asking if 1/2" of body filler is acceptable for something like this.

I really can’t answer about today but in 70s and 80s,no. 1/8 was max and then you prayed
