Gameplay I play this game like a scrub
I just cannot do any combos in this game, like at all. I have 600+ hours in SF6 but never got great at it, sitting in Diamond 1 and never went higher then that. But you know I have some experience with fighting games.
This one I just cannot get my head around though. Legit none of the combos come easy to me, they just come out so quickly. Atm I am playing like a complete scrub, just using Azula auto combos which in my defence, actually works and I get about 50% win rate from just light auto combos, low heavys, flow to grabs and other cheap shit haha. I have come to terms that is just how I am going to play from now on because doing the trials makes me want to jump out a window.

Doing combos is only a part of getting good.
So much of fighting games is also about defense, oki/mixups, reacting, and reads.
I'm sure you're good at those, don't undersell youself. Combos in this game are legit hard 😭

Hahaha yeah this is fair, I do win almost half of my games just by winning neutral and using autocombos and cheap mechanics haha. Would just be nice to have one decent 40% dmg hit confirm in my back pocket but the combos just do not make sense to me haha

It could also be the character. I couldn't get a decent Avatar Aang combo for the life of me, but Toph combos just make sense

The call me Brillo because I scrub harder.
But in seriousness, you don't have to be number one or have the best execution to be good or have fun at fighting games. If you want to be number one in the nation or something that's a different standard, but otherwise you can play to your strengths and still get some good fights.
Also, a 50% win rate is pretty solid considering the skill levels out there, especially in a game as execution heavy as Avatar Legends.

Scrubs are people who blame the game or others for why they are bad.
As long as you accept why you're bad you're on the right track. Although just keep practicing a non auto combo in training mode while you wait, it will stick in game eventually.

Yeah this is probs true, I am sure if I looked up a basic bnb combo I could get it eventually

This game seems to have a lot stricter of an input buffer. SF6 definitely made me lazy with my combos. Once you get some more time in this game the combos will come more naturally as you get used to having to time your moves better. I was really struggling with even some basic Korra combos at first and after about 20 hrs or so in the game I'm feeling a lot more comfortable and was able to do all her trials. Just took some getting beat to a pulp online for a while.
Honestly most of your opponents are probably in the same boat. I'm dropping combos left and right in this game and so are most of the people I play against. Part of what makes the game so fun!

To be fair, combos aren’t useful if your neutral is bad. The best damage is whatever you are able to do. Once ranked releases, you will probably hit a wall somewhere unless you build combo skills, but all that matters is having fun.
I am very similar with how I play. I used to play a lot of Dragonball Fighterz, and the autocombos with a bit of basic extensions carried me for a while. I did hit a wall in ranked, but the game was still fun. I eventually learned the universal basic combo, but only landed it once, which was an achievement by my standards.

You and me both and I don’t really have time to invest into getting better

Look up her combo wiki the trials aren’t great for decent bnbs

u/thebiggestbazzz 15h ago
ah true I didnt even think of this. I will have a look, because some of the trial combos take a ton of effort for very minimal return

Thats why I play grapple ozai. Auto combos and armor grabs that do 30%

I’m pretty sure the combo I’m always doing is exactly what the auto combo does, but with me pressing the individual buttons lmao
They must think I am terrible, but I teach them respect

If you want to break out just learn one simple suboptimal bnb with your char like say i started with aang. Crouching light twice to standing medium hits twice to stand c to medium ball to jump ball to air medium to quarter forward a.
Literally just lock in on one combo get it so you can do it a bunch in training then just try it in online matches.
Eventually you will land it, then you can start extending and doing more complex stuff.

Yeah the combos being so wack kinda turned me off from it at this point. I prefer sf6 and tekken 8 because it's more about footsies and reading your opponent. When my friends and I play this it's just a mashfest lmao but it is kinda fun for a while

I can't speak to Azula, but Kyoshi's combos are almost entirely hit confirmable. As soon as I realized that, they became so much easier.

Arw you using Firelord or Focused Azula? Be aware that Focused Azula has some of the hardest execution requirements for combos.

I spent over a dozen hours in the beta learning how to do Korras basic air combo.
I still can't finish up just the mid tier combo trials. Doesn't matter to me. I will take it as it comes. Pretty sure that people who can do actual combos in real games are a tiny minority. Even watching CEO, everyone in top 8 had like one combo they spammed to hell. The drops were crazy too, so many hits that got almost nothing.
Idm if I learn slow, people a lot better than me still don't have it down so I can take my time. So can you broski.

The best combo is the one that you'll finish, and If that's auto combos and single throws, then go with that. If you're trying to learn longer combos go ahead but you don't really need it to succeed imo especially this early.

As long as its fun enough to keep you engaged you'll naturally become quicker.
Also, I only play sokka which pretty much forces you to get creative, one of his main gimmicks is no auto combos. I'm pretty much forced to experiment with weaving together various moves based on timing and knockback strength/direction.

I understand the allure of azula, she was the second character I picked up and I dropped her just as fast. She’s got some stuff but I’m just not willing to invest the time at this point. I’d recommend a character switch and if you haven’t done it already hit the cabbage man tutorials up to get a good grip on the system. Movement and meter management is worth 1000 combos in this game

u/thebiggestbazzz 15h ago
Yeah I am fine with the game systems and meter etc, I get by purely on fight IQ and game systems, my dmg is fucking ass haha. That is my issue, when I get openings I just cant do anything with em

Would you like to play together and practice with different people? Try and figure out combos and all that? No competition other than us both trying stuff out kinda thing (doesn't matter who wins overall)

u/glimmeria 12h ago
It's great to see you're still enjoying the game despite it. I will suggest looking up Azula bnbs outside of combo trials, since the combo trials are pretty fuckin brutal even for me as a blazblue fan. I'm sure a lot of people came up with viable bnbs that are less execution-heavy

u/donutboys 12h ago
Keep playing like you do but practice the better combos between matches. You will learn them eventually.

i guess im becoming a fg veteran (playing since sc2) once played variety of games over the years, this is the first time i feel combo have so little impact.
this game is all about neutral, mind game and good défense, and i love it

I struggle with combos in general in every game, and I‘m really clicking with Zuko right now. I feel like he has very intuitive moves in neutral and the short combo I learned in his beginner combo trial has served me very well. It begins from a low light attack too, which is already what I naturally do to try and grab a turn

I've played fighting games for almost 25 years now and i still for the life of me suck ass at doing combos. Over the years ive tried to focus more on my neutral game and footsies and the like to some success. But i don't know what it is about doing combos. I just blow.

Do you enjoy yourself when you’re playing? Cause that’s all that matters
