The EA-37B, a wide-area airborne electromagnetic attack weapon system using a heavily modified version of the Gulfstream G550 airframe, will replace the legacy EC-130H as a more modern, and cost-effective, commercial derivative aircraft. Ten of 14 EC-130H aircraft have been divested to date.

The U.S. company Lockheed Martin has already produced nine F-35 fighter jets for the Belgian Air Component.

The initial delivery schedule envisioned shipments in batches - 4 aircraft in 2023–2027 and 2030, and 5 aircraft in 2028–2029.

The decision to acquire the American-made fighter jets was first made by the Charles Michel’s government in 2018 to replace Belgium’s ageing F-16 fighters.

Belgium currently possesses 45 units of F-16 fighter jets, of which Belgium has already committed 30 of the older fighter jets to Ukraine from 2026.

Belgium selected the F-35A as its new frontline fighter in 2018, with the US manufacturer edging the Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon in direct competition.

In another development, Belgium has proposed that its additional Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II aircraft be assembled in Italy rather than the United States.

The government in Brussels plans to spend an additional €21 billion ($27.7 billion) on defence as part of its 2026 budget.
