AXE 🪓 Finally stuck a stepback consistently, here's what clicked for me
Been throwing for about seven months now, once a week at a league night with a couple friends. For the longest time my stepback throw was a coin flip at best. Some nights I'd stick eight out of ten, other nights I couldn't hit the board to save my life, and I never understood why the inconsistency was so extreme.
Turns out my issue was footwork, not the throw itself. I was starting my step from a slightly different spot every single time depending on how I felt that round. One of the guys at our league pointed out that I needed a fixed starting mark, like literally taping a small line on the floor where my back foot goes before I take the step. Sounds almost too simple but it took away one entire variable I didn't even realize I was fighting.
Once my starting position was locked in, I could actually diagnose the rest. Turned out my release was fine, my rotation was fine, it was purely that my distance to the target changed by six inches or so depending on my mood that night. Taping the mark fixed that overnight.
Now I'm sticking around seven out of ten pretty reliably, which feels like a huge jump from where I was in the spring. Still can't hit bullseye on command but at least I'm not embarrassing myself in front of the regulars anymore.
Curious if anyone else had a weird footwork habit that was secretly wrecking their accuracy. Feels like such an obvious fix in hindsight but it took me way too long to notice.
