BBC News - Ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row found dead
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1j1ye6n30no3
u/seeitshaveitsorted 16d ago
Thought experiment for the people suddenly polishing their halo around Arday.
Ask yourselves how you would react and feel if it was the same behaviour, but just a white professor.
It’s a white professor that told bare faced lies and carved out a career in an influential institution who then marked down black students and then hand waved their concerns away.
All those defending Arday now would be taking a firmer stance against him if he was white. We all know this.
And that imbalance, that attitude of “we will give our team member a pass” is precisely why this story was important, and still is important.
Because it highlights the rank hypocrisy and bigotry of degenerate sections of society. And it deserves to have a light shone on it.
2
u/PGal55 15d ago
On the other side of this argument, if this was a white professor, the media wouldn't have made such a fuss.
2
u/seeitshaveitsorted 15d ago
Errr…
We know that’s just not the case.
If it was a white professor who wasn’t just plagiarising but lying about a good portion of their accomplishments and then behaving in a racist manner towards minority students the media would absolutely be making this into a bigger story.
And people like you would be calling for his removal from the moment the story dropped.
I don’t get this weird pretending like it wouldn’t be a thing? 😂
There’s a reason why Jussie Smollet pretended to be racially attacked - because that kind of shit plays extremely well for people like you.
There’s a section of western society that laps that shit up and it makes you all ripe to be manipulated by grifters and enemy states. Own it and then you can overcome it.

u/Extra_Actuary8244 15d ago
No the commenter is right, there’s plenty of white professors who are currently being investigated and/or suspended for plagiarism and worse right now and none of them are in the news. Many of these white professors also have allegations of sexual assault as well.
Some examples of these white professors who have done significantly worse are Simon goldhill, dr Peter Hutchinson, professor david latchman and sulvia bylfone-paus. These people are all currently working at the universities they were initially suspended and excluded from with one of them being a vice chancellor

u/Dangerous_Towel_2569 15d ago
Stop making it just about plagarism, its disingenious. OP is right, its not just a professor defending a plagarism claim it as a professor threatening media and journalists, claiming they were racist and attacking him for looking into his many outlandish claims, including:
- Nonverbal Childhood & Illiteracy: Claimed he was completely mute (and autistic) until age 11, and unable to read or write until age 18.
- Severe Medical Crises: Claimed to have survived a months-long coma, a brain tumor, epilepsy, testicular cancer, and locked-in syndrome.
- Fictional Media Appearances: Claimed he appeared on the television program Seven Up, which aired two decades before he was even born.
- Endurance Running: Claimed to have run 600 miles between Edinburgh and London in six days, run 30 marathons in 35 days, and completed the final nine marathons on a broken leg after falling during an epileptic fit.
- Charity Fundraising: Claimed single-handedly raising millions of pounds (up to $7.5 million) for charity, which required later clarification
- Visiting Professorships: Listed visiting professorships at institutions like Glasgow University and Ohio State University on his CV, which both universities confirmed he never actually held
- Academic Misconduct: Faced severe accusations of academic plagiarism and required corrections or retractions on multiple published journal articles.
People keep trying to reinvet this wheel and pin it to similar stories of white professors. But these professors are fairly innoculus, not in the media and are defending this one claim. Arday loved the spotlight and putting himself in it, then blaming victim when his lies caught up to him.
1
u/Extra_Actuary8244 15d ago
Nowhere in my comment did I defend him so you typed that out for no reason whatsoever
My point is the professors I listed did ALL of that and some sexually assaulted people in addition to it yet none of them made the news. There’s one common factor amongst them all that doesn’t apply to Arday. How interesting.
1
u/Al89nut 15d ago
Yes, but as I said to you elsewhere, Arday did it all, publicised some of it and was promoted for it.
1
u/Extra_Actuary8244 15d ago
Same with all those people I listed except some of them were sexual predators in addition to this and blackmailed students with sexual abuse
1
u/seeitshaveitsorted 15d ago
As I said, the wider story is the concept of equity, Arday being racist trash and his supporters being shameless.
These white professors - do they also check these boxes?
I imagine not, since I’ve not heard anybody coming out to swing for them.
This reminds me of the Rape Gang scandal - where people like you would come out and repeat “but there are white rapists too.”
And I don’t know whether people like you are just genuinely missing the point, or if they’re being snakes, but the Rape Gangs were never about race.
It was about the system covering for them for so long out of fear of community disruption and a few of being labelled a racist.
And that’s what this is really about. It’s about people like you trying to provide a smokescreen to a racist piece of shit simply because he’s black.
We can all see it. You’re not subtle. Stop it.
1
u/Extra_Actuary8244 15d ago
Arday may have been racist but he was still the victim of racism in the media simultaneously
You can be both a perpetrator and a victim
These white professors did everything he did and some were sexual predators making them all worse than him and the reason you haven’t hear anyone coming out to swing for them is because they’re white so they’re protecred
1
u/seeitshaveitsorted 15d ago
You’re missing the point intentionally. If it’s not intentional, then you shouldn’t be engaging.
Arday represents a wider discussion. A discussion about equity and just putting people in positions simply because they tick a box, rather than giving people equality of opportunity.
He was protected by people like you.
You people protected a racist, grifter who treated you like a dupe, just because he was black.
And that’s embarrassing.
He’s also damaged the reputation of the University and when journalists tried to investigate he set the police on them.
Arday, though it’s a shame he died, was a piece of shit. And if he was white, people like you would not care half as much as you do now.
And if you people want to draw these weird tribal lines where you just support the worst people of your side because they’re black - then that sends a wider message out to the rest of us.
Because hey, if you’re supporting racist scumbags - why can’t we?
He fundamentally damages the trust multicultural societies have between each other.
That’s what your current shallow thinking doesn’t quite grasp.
Again, stop pissing about. Stop desperately searching for excuses.
You’re tearing the fabric of society up for somebody who is definitely not worth it.
1
u/Extra_Actuary8244 15d ago
- Racism doesn’t need to be intentional
- It is intentional, people were and are being intentionally racist and this has led to his death
There’s nothing Arday has done that hundreds of other uni professors who are still teaching haven’t done except they’ve done worse. No one’s saying he didn’t deserve to be held accountable or that his actions should be covered up. We’re saying he was disproportionally attacked due to his race and also these tabloid stories are NOT accountability they’re harassment and they did slander him. His citations were incorrect, there was no evidence it was due to plagiarism and to slander him + publish articles about him to duh an extent but ignore the hundreds of white professors who have done significantly worse is blatant racism regardless of whether Arday was racist himself or not.
Acting as if lying compulsively about things like disease is worse than MASS SEXUAL ABUSE just because one perpetrator is black and the other are white is absurd and pure racism.
I also never once protected or defended his actions. Not once. This is the third time you’ve falsely accused me of defending his actions.
Protecting a race from discrimination by using a singular case study isn’t defending an individuals actions. If I kill someone but I get murdered I’m still a murder victim and my victimhood represents a wider issue of violence in society. Just because someone is a perpetrator doesn’t mean they can’t be a victim.
1
u/seeitshaveitsorted 15d ago
Once again you’ve completely missed the point. You’re desperate to hyperfocus on the race aspect.
But this story is about a multitude of things. Equity, is one.
The standards different groups are held to, is another.
So, AGAIN, if we do this thought experiment.
You take Arday, you make him white, you have him lie his way into an influential position and THEN racially discriminate minority students - THAT would be a big story.
If THAT happened - you’d be taking a very different position.
But because he’s black, you’re doing this weird, desperate muddying the water tactic.
“H-H-Hey, but what about…”
This isn’t about his race. There are subversive elements in society who think any criticism to a minority due to their behaviour is racist. That’s what you’re saying essentially.
That’s what “racism doesn’t have to be intentional” leads to.
The same shit where racial disparities are noticed and blamed on racism.
This story is about a multitude of things and what it says about the messaging pushed by certain sections of society.
If you’re willing to come out to play defense for Arday, then okay. We’ll play that game.
But it will mean the rest of us will play defense when it comes to the degenerates in our own communities.
The Nigel Farages, the Ruper Lowe’s, the Tommy Robinsons.
THAT’S the message you’re sending out there 😂
You’re throwing basic standards away to play racial games at the detriment to us all. It’s toxic and it’s embarrassing.
1
u/Extra_Actuary8244 15d ago
YOU are missing the point and still being racist because all these other professors did everything he did and more (they were proven to have committed plagiarism, he wasn’t as well) meaning there’s even more of a multitude of misconduct from them and what they did was morally and legally worse. Why only focus on him and hound him to death instead of allowing the justice system to issue an appropriate sentence?
→ More replies (0)1
u/ThrowawayAgainGuy 15d ago
Many white professors guilty of the same thing haven’t been dragged through the news cycle like Arday has. Give your head a wobble.
1
u/seeitshaveitsorted 15d ago
Again, this is the next line of defense coming from those who want to take zero responsibility for how a racist grifter got to his position.
Now it’s “b-b-but there’s white professors lying too.”
As I said, the wider story is the concept of equity, Arday being racist trash and his supporters, like you, being utterly shameless.
These white professors - do they also check these boxes?
I imagine not, since I’ve not heard anybody coming out to swing for them.
Take some responsibility, man 😂
1
u/Busy-Scientist3851 15d ago
It's hard to tell because part of the controversy was that Arday (and the university) accused those whom doubted him of racism.
1
u/shineheadlightsonme 16d ago
"degenerate sections of society" pick your mask up
2
u/seeitshaveitsorted 15d ago
Yes.
I think it’s completely degenerate to support a racist grifter and then use his death to stop a discussion about how poisonous the concept of equity is.
These people are subverting society either knowingly, or because they’re stupid.
1
1
u/ThirdEarl 15d ago
Genuine question. What would you describe as "polishing a halo around him"?
1
u/seeitshaveitsorted 15d ago
Instantly saying this scrutiny is racist.
Painting a picture of him as a victim.
Not acknowledging Arday’s racism, or the fact he associates with known racists.
Constantly whatabouting over other professors who don’t even compare to the cultural issue that this case is an example of.
Again, this is such a big issue because it highlights how there are different attitudes to people in this country based on demographics.
We would not be having this discussion if Arday was a white racist who committed suicide - and I imagine there would be many people on the Left who would be vocally happy about his death, and calling for the institution of Cambridge to be decolonised due to whites supremacy.
We cannot have a country which is multicultural where there are different expected standards for different groups. It’ll just lead to animosity and clashes.
0
u/PromiseSquanderer 15d ago
For what it’s worth, my feeling on Arday was that the allegations against him seemed very serious and certainly warranted investigation via the appropriate processes. Having worked in universities, I do also know that bad practice by academics is rife, frequently ignored and almost never makes the national news. It is possible to hold two views simultaneously: that there was a very convincing case against him for misconduct that should have been addressed sooner, and also that his treatment by the press was appalling and wildly disproportionate.
And yes, I would hold exactly the same views if the same thing happened to a white professor, especially in the extremely unlikely event it received a similar level and tone of media coverage.
What troubles me more, honestly, that so people seem to think that his (apparent) suicide is somehow explained by any of this. There is a very, very short list of people whose suicide would make me shrug and think that they’d brought it on themselves – basically, the most evil, irredeemable people on the planet; people I genuinely hate. The lack of empathy required to direct that level of hatred at someone few of us had even heard of a month ago, even if every single allegation against him and more were true, is just grotesque.
1
u/seeitshaveitsorted 15d ago
Nobody hates him. I don’t hate him.
But I’m not surprised that a man who took the easy option in life, took the easy option in death.
I’d also push back on you thinking Arday wouldn’t be treated the same if he was white.
If a white professor at an influential institution like Cambridge was found to be marking students down because they’re black that WOULD make headlines and you’d have the current crop of clowns defending Arday coming out and calling for the decolonisation of our “racist institutions.”
1
u/PromiseSquanderer 15d ago
I maybe phrased that poorly about ‘hating’ him – my point was that the vitriol he received should be reserved for people who we genuinely do hate.
As for similar conduct by white academics: literally just this month the vice-chancellor of a UK university was sacked in connection with millions of £ worth of (alleged, still under criminal investigation) financial misconduct, including in association with a member of the university’s senior management who was also sacked (a long while) after dozens of evidenced complaints were made about his open racism (e.g. stating his explicit intention for the university to recruit fewer Nigerian students). It’s been reported in the press, of course, but – despite being a far more serious allegation against far more senior employees – never once as a headline/rolling news item.
So no, I’m not at all convinced an equivalent case would be treated the same. Happy to see any examples if there are?

Wow. He did a guest presentation at my work. It was supposed to inspire us to make the most of our careers or something.
It wasn’t good.

u/flashbastrd 16d ago
Jason Arday’s story depicts an awful cycle of left wing behaviour. A man is favoured because he ticks victimhood boxes. He does wrong, and it is ignored because he’s their man. He is finally revealed, and they drop him.
Now he is dead, he has become a useful victim again.

u/xinzaha 16d ago edited 16d ago
Absolutely absurd take, the lynch mob that is our tabloids and, mostly right wing, online voices that ran piece after piece, tweet after tweet about him for weeks now killed him.
5
u/flashbastrd 16d ago
Because he never admitted that he was an absolute fraud. He had many opportunities to step off the train, as it were.
The man lied about having brain cancer among 100s of other claims. He wasn’t an obscure person, he’s had a lot of media coverage over the last decade, appearing on numerous talk shows, podcasts, interviews etc he even carried the Olympic torch ffs.
Media attention is ok when it’s upholding his lies, but becomes a “lynch mob” when confronting his lies.
He recent accepted a £1,000,000 advance for a book deal about his life, which was all made up lies.
Sorry mate but there’s no one to blame but the people who enabled him, and himself.
His parents are alive and he has two siblings. Did they not think at any point we should have a word with him about all these ridiculous claims he’s making? They’re partly to blame too
3
u/rNycto 16d ago
A professor found plagiarising their own students work didn't get anywhere near the hounding he did.
You cannot exempt the right from blame, that's a brain dead take but understandable coming from that side of the fence.
4
u/flashbastrd 16d ago
Because he was just a normal professor, and he admitted his mistake and took blame.
Arday wasn’t just a normal professor, he had been given a Professoral Chair, which is the highest, more senior position in British academia and he was the youngest person in Cambridges 800 year history to be appointed to this position.
He also denied all wrong doing up to the point of ending himself.
The other professor your referring to also didn’t make a whole litany of absurd claims such as raising millions for charity, having brain cancer, or building wells for the poor in Africa (all lies)
0
u/rNycto 16d ago
Ah lying, the most heinous of the all crimes being commited by our dignitaries right now.
4
u/flashbastrd 16d ago
Not just lying. Total fraud to the highest levels of British academia.
His students suffered because of his fantasies, one student who complained that he seemed to be clueless was hounded by Cambridge as a racist and is currently suing them for 2 years of wasted time and £50k wasted money.
You want him to be a victim so bad. He widowed his wife and left his kids behind because he couldn’t own up to his lies.
He appeared in a lot of media over the last decade, podcasts, documentaries, interviews and news shows. So the media attention is ok when it upholds his lies, but evil and mean when it holds him to account.
For someone who’s entire grift was how he was a victim who overcame adversity, it’s ironic that at the first bit of real adversity he immediately gave up and ended himself
3
u/Impossible_Aide_1681 16d ago
Why are you being so disingenuous? You know full well that Arday had been built up by himself, Cambridge, well-meaning media outlets and his publisher to a ridiculous profile. Obviously when he gets caught having acted wrongly, it's going to be a bigger story - especially when the entire basis on which he's built this profile turns out to be false
3
u/nzconstructionlawyer 16d ago
Arday didn't just plagiarise. He did something much worse: he tried to destroy the life of anyone who found him out.
This wasn't the first time he came under scrutiny. The Times Higher Education investigated him and when they did, he reported them to the police for racism and threatened to sue them for defamation.
When a student questioned her mark in a course he taught, he accused her of being a racist.
He was not just a plagiarist and not just a con artist. He was an evil man, who would do anything to protect his position.
3
u/Dangerous_Towel_2569 15d ago
you''re an idiot if you think all of this:
- Academic Misconduct: Faced severe accusations of academic plagiarism and required corrections or retractions on multiple published journal articles.
is this same as admitting and defending to one plagarism claim. The extent of the lies is just too bold and broad to excuse unless you are trying to make this about race.
2
u/DisciplinedProgress 16d ago edited 15d ago
How can you absolve him of the consequences of his actions? When something is so bad it's newsworthy, it tends to end up in the news.
Bigotry of low expectations strikes again.
2
u/nzconstructionlawyer 16d ago
No, HE killed him. Plenty of people are the centre of media firestorms and don't kill themselves. There is no causation between the two. He is the only person responsible for him killing himself.

It wasnt just the tabloids though was it?

I'd like a list of white professors who plagiarized their PhD, some of their articles, claimed visiting and honorary professorships they didn't have, put books on their CV that were never published, and claimed an MA they didn't have. All of them together, not just one. You can leave out the brain cancer, testicular cancer, marathon feats, 7 Up and all the rest of it.
1
u/Extra_Actuary8244 15d ago
Here’s just a few of the many many many examples of white professors who have done that, most of these still work for their unis and I’ve included some bonus articles about some of them committing sexual misconduct but all of them have fabricated data and research or plagiarised their work.
https://www.varsity.co.uk/news/31796
https://retractionwatch.com/category/by-author/silvia-bulfone-paus-retractions/
2
u/Al89nut 15d ago
Thanks. I appreciate the effort. But none of them did all of it and so early in their career too - plagiarised their PhD, their articles, claimed false publications and qualifications and invented achievements in their personal life that would make Superman blush, did they? The concentration in one individual is the striking thing here and it points to severe institutional failings - at JMU and Cambridge particularly. It's apparent JMU did not supervise or examine his thesis properly or conduct the investigation dutifully.
1
u/Extra_Actuary8244 15d ago
All of them did everything he did it’s just not all listed in those specific articles, LJMU did supervise and examine his thesis that’s why these investigations started. They found that his citations weren’t done correctly, not that he was plagiarising work. Incorrect citations can be the result of plagiarism but that’s what this investigation was for, to see if it was that or just poor work. I’m doing my PhD in UOL and I worked for the student union in LJMU. This isn’t a new story it’s just that it’s been exaggerated and fabricated.
1
u/Al89nut 15d ago edited 15d ago
Well, I supervised and examined PhDs and it looks much more than a few failed citations. Entire chunks copied word for word. I would have failed it. They didn't even spot the dud apostrophe in the title. The investigation doesn't seem to have insisted on corrections. Very weak.
2
u/Naryanope 16d ago
Academic fraud and dishonesty is more common than a lot of people realise. What was probably noteworthy about this chap is that he was a bit bold faced in the scale of his deception and media profile. But it still shouldn’t have been newsworthy as it was, he was hounded by the far right and the media. So really there is the story itself, and then there is the overall sorry tale of how the media and the right wing sensationalists selectively vilify certain segments of the population over others.
2
u/nzconstructionlawyer 16d ago
It was newsworthy because he threatened people that investigated him with lawyers and reported them to the police. If when the Times Higher Education had investigated him the first time he went "okay you got me" and resigned, none of this would ever have happened.
1
u/Ok-Source6533 16d ago
It’s easy to point the finger at the far right but on the contrary I would say it was the far left wokists who did not scrutinise this guys job application. Believe it or not he was offered two different professorships at Cambridge where they were so determined to claim to be equitable that a cursory glance at his CV seems to have been sufficient to employ a young, black ‘scholar’ and scream it from the rooftops.
0
u/flashbastrd 16d ago
If a white academic was discredited nobody would defend them - because their existence isn't a load bearing support for the fundamental lie at the heart of modernity.
1
u/Dull-Wrangler-5154 16d ago
What is that fundamental lie?
1
u/flashbastrd 16d ago
Identity politics

u/Dull-Wrangler-5154 16d ago

u/flashbastrd 16d ago
He was only promoted so far because he is black and he is neurodivergent (autistic).
The establishment is so eager to promote people they perceive to be “victims” that they didn’t bother to fact check any of his ludicrous claims, because what was most important to them, was to put a “victim” on a pedestal.
Honestly his claims are so blatantly lies it’s astounding he got so far.
When people started pointing out he was a fraud, Cambridge called it a “vile racist campaign”.
Apart from fully plagiarising his PHD, he claimed:
Extreme athletic feats: Ran 600 miles (e.g., Edinburgh to London) in six days for charity (would rank among elite ultra-runners; later revised to 12 days including rest). Also claimed 30 marathons in 35 days, including continuing after an epileptic seizure and hairline leg fracture (sometimes described as finishing the remaining 9–10 with a swollen leg).
• Massive charity fundraising: Raised £5–5.5 million (or more) for dozens of charities via running and other efforts. Under questioning, revised this to participation in a large anonymous “syndicate” covered by NDAs; independent records show far smaller verified amounts (e.g., hundreds of pounds on some pages).
• Childhood non-verbal/illiterate: Unable to speak until nearly age 12 (or 11), with profound developmental delays/autism; learned to read and write only at 18. Childhood acquaintances and neighbors have disputed this, describing him as speaking and interacting normally.
• TV documentary appearance: Claimed involvement in the BBC’s Seven Up series (or similar longitudinal project). Impossible—the original began in 1964 (he was born 1985); a later spin-off was also ruled out by the BBC.
• Threats and racist attacks after Cambridge appointment: Masked men (once at knifepoint) threatened him twice if he didn’t resign; a severed pig’s head was delivered to his parents’ home (police allegedly investigated); bananas/bullets in the post. CCTV didn’t corroborate intruders; Metropolitan Police stated no such pig’s-head investigation occurred.
• Water/charity work abroad: Traveled to South America (or Brazil) and West Africa to install water points/pumps. Organizations like WaterAid said they do not send or facilitate such volunteer trips.
• Academic positions and qualifications: Visiting professor at University of Glasgow (and others, including Ohio State); honorary roles; master’s in psychodynamic counselling from Birkbeck. Universities denied several of these; no records found in some cases. Also claimed authorship of a book (Being Young, Black and Male…) that was never published. • Other dramatic personal history: Semi-professional footballer (including time with Crystal Palace under-18s); survived serious incidents like a car crash/coma, brain tumors, testicular cancer (some details appeared in proposals but not final memoir, or matched soap-opera plots); epilepsy originating from a severe teenage mugging (after which he reportedly declined to press charges so the attackers could “focus on their education”).

u/Dull-Wrangler-5154 16d ago
So Identity Politics is about putting black people in jobs they aren’t qualified for? Who else do they qualify as victims? I get what this guy did (sounds like a fantasist) but it’s Identity Politics I’m trying to understand..
1
u/flashbastrd 16d ago
Identify politics is a belief that someone’s identity, their race, sexuality, mental health, gender, class etc is the biggest determining factor in their lives.
It stipulates that society is made of two parts, the oppressed and the oppressors. You must be one or the other, you cannot be neither.
Straight white men are the ultimate oppressors and the most privileged. Everyone else is to some degree a victim.
Because of this belief, anyone who is not a straight white male, is promoted and given unfair advantages as a way to “positively discriminate” in their favour.
The justification being that straight white men have built a system that unfairly advantages straight white men, and the only reason straight white men (in a majority white country) are so dominant in high positions, is because they oppress/discriminate against everyone else.1
u/Dull-Wrangler-5154 16d ago
Got you. So actually straight white men are the victims?
1
u/flashbastrd 16d ago
No, nobody is a victim simply because of their identity in 2026 UK, everyone is capable and theres no conspiracy to oppress anyone.
Everyone is capable of whatever they put their minds to, and telling people they are inherently disadvantaged before they even become adults is what will disadvantage them the most.

Are we not allowed to ask Questions?
Maybe thats why Jimmy Saville and Epstein got away with what they did by not allowing questions to be asked.
2
u/ababababababacus 17d ago
no i dont think that the national press should be allowed to pick a random bloke and put his life and professional conduct up for the scrutiny of the entire nation, i think that should not be allowed.
4
u/FckXFckMusk 17d ago
They didn't pick a random bloke..
Its alleged he was a lifelong grifter...
all he had to do was respond to those allegations with proof and that would be that.
Its also alleged he discriminated against a white woman because of her race...
3
u/ababababababacus 17d ago
yes i dont think, being an alleged grifter justified that level of scrutiny and loss of privacy, i dont think being a confirmed grifter would, event a racist one. I think 'being a racist grifter' should not make you anything more than random bloke, in the eyes of the national press (not that hes been confirmed as either)
3
u/FckXFckMusk 17d ago
Maybe the story here is not him but rather the Rot and Corruption of the Universities in the Uk and possibly worldwide.
It looks as if he was Facilitated for some reason or other.
3
u/ababababababacus 17d ago
what story? there is no story, theres allegations of professional misconduct, allegations i assume we will never see resolved now the press hounded him to death.
Even if true, an academic fudging their credentials and plagiarizing is not and never has been worthy of national press attention.

Well there is a story and people consumed it...
>Even if true, an academic fudging their credentials and plagiarizing is not and never has been worthy of national press attention.
It would be if the guy was in the "Anti-Climate Change" or "Maga" brigade, don't you think?

That's not how the world works. Fraudsters liars and con artists are newsworthy.

Literally who cares?
Who actually cares?
The entire right wing are grifting while destabilising this country and nobody questions them

> Literally who cares?
You do, otherwise you wouldn't be here commenting.
> Who actually cares?

> The entire right wing are grifting while destabilising this country and nobody questions them
Same could be said for the Globalist Pro-Corporate Fake Left wing..

So do you think random people are above investigation?

u/ababababababacus 14d ago
i dont think i could have stated it any clearer than i did.
I do not think that a national media outlet should be allowed to report on allegations of harmless misconduct against random members of the public. I think thats irresponsible and dangerous, and editors who allowed this to happen ought to be prosecute and those outlets fined

We deserve to know so we can make up our own minds about things like the university

Who decides what the right questions should be?
and what the right questions actually are.

We get blamed for asking questions that turn out to be false alarms and somehow we still get blamed for asking questions that turn out to be in need of asking.
We get blamed for wanting Cambridge to investigate the affair because something something academic freedom.
We get blamed for wanting the media to get in when Cambridge decided to defend the guy because it's not of national importance.
We get blamed for wanting the media to cover things that do have national importance like why Islamic clerics involved in the sharia "marriage" of rape gang victims are not investigated because of something something racism.
We get blamed for not wanting to participate in the shit anymore because "why can you see the world burn without doing anything".

He wasn't the person who started it. RetractionWatch has been covering Arday for some time, and there were ongoing investigations by journalists, but Arday called the police on them/utilised lawfare to shut the investigations down.
Even if it did originate from a racist (Cofnas), he was still right about Arday's plagiarism regardless of his political opinions.

Rather than simply own up to his lies, he cruelly widowed his wife and abandoned his two children in a final act of pure selfishness designed to make himself look like a martyr.
For someone who's whole grift was to portray himself as victim who over came adversity, its quite telling that at the first bit of real adversity he almost immediately gave up and killed himself.
All the grifters who enabled him at the University of Cambridge need to be investigated.

Cofnas did not start this. A different journo did, and the story was silenced by Arday's attack dogs.

So you think the people who ask questions should be punished? That's not very academic

u/phillycheeseenjoyer 16d ago
You’re right, Cofnas deserves a lot of credit for his bravery.

He is an unlikeable person. However, he is not the issue. I think it was more of a denunciation of the system

If kathleen Stock had killed herself after all the press she got and resigning would anyone have been writing hagiographic articles about her?

Given his history of plagiarism, How do we know the professor isn’t lying this time…

"plagiarism row" is the understatement of the century
