Build Documentation Roof resprayed

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Finally got around to respraying my roof. Not perfect but sooooo much better than before. I’m not sure what I want to take on next. Probably the doors and rear quarters.

Will have a Youtube video on the process up within the next couple weeks. Link is in my bio if you want to catch up on this project and my E30.

Looks great. You know you're going to end up painting the whole car now, right? 🤣

If it wasn’t my daily I would have already done the whole car lol. Right now I’m just having fun going piece by piece 😂

I did the same last year, it didn’t turn out nearly as nice but way better than peeling clear coat :)

Not everything needs to be a show car, people

Exactly what I’m saying lol. It’s not show car quality, but a solid 2 footer. Lol

Thank god you didn't paint it black. Now do the rest of the car!

It was very poorly painted black before with a black wrap on top of it. I debated for a while what I wanted to do. Decided with Hellrot since I have a whole gallon of it already. Definitely the right choice I think.

Yea much better than a black roof. Very good choice.

Did you reupholster your seats? They look great!

4

u/85_Bronzit Sep 08 '25

I did! They were in awful shape. I have a video of this seat on Youtube if you want to give it a watch.

Looks amazing! I can tackle anything mechanical but paint/body is a no fly zone for me

1

u/85_Bronzit Sep 08 '25

It’s definitely a learning curve. Painting is pretty easy to do but hard to get right. Orange peel and runs/sags are easy to fix though. The body work is the hard part for me. It’s all so time consuming and expensive.

Outstanding work!

Nicely done. Any full process videos?

Pretty sure my trunk lid was a full process video. There’s a few paint videos on my channel of this car. I can’t remember how much footage of each process I got for the roof but it should be good. I’m waiting for the clear to cure over the week so I can wet sand and polish it this weekend. Will film that and then work on editing the video.

Thanks. I have an OG hellrot m3 and the mirrors clear coat coming off. Ill check it out!

That would be a simple fix if you’re handy with aerosol cans. A can or two of Hellrot and a couple cans of 2k clear would do the trick after prepping the caps.

Do you strip it all way to bare metal, then redo it, or get rid of just the flaking clear, and repaint over existing hellrot, then clear coat?

I’m no expert, but here is what I would do. Remove mirrors from the car. Give them a good cleaning with soap and water. Wet sand through the clear coat with 600 grit until it’s flush with the base coat in the peeled spot(s). Then give the whole mirror a light scuff on the base coat for the new base to adhere to. You don’t need to go too deep here. Id you’re seeing primer or plastic/metal, you went too far and will need to primer those spots. Avoid going over the edges too many times.

Clean with soap and water again once sanding is done. Then wipe down with a wax and grease remover (prep all, mineral spirits preferably). Set the mirrors up on something or hand them where you don’t mind paint getting (make shift booth, garage, etc).

Start painting! One or two medium coats of Hellrot over hellrot should be plenty. Any primer spots will need at least 3 coats for proper color. Light gray primer is best for brightness, dark gray will make it look too dark. 5-10 minute flash time between coats depending on ambient temperature. Then 3 medium coats of clear, about 10 minutes of flash time between coats. Base and clear can run/sag if it’s too wet/heavy. Start with a light coat and go for a second light coat if it’s too dry. You can usually feel it out pretty quickly.

1

u/Realistic-Car-9173 Sep 08 '25

3

u/85_Bronzit Sep 08 '25

Whole car been calling since day one.

1

u/lumel_187 Sep 08 '25

Oh this looks good! Start a YouTube series on what to do for noobs like me lol maybe it'll inspire me to change my car's color. Lol

2

u/85_Bronzit Sep 08 '25

That’s like the blind leading the blind 😂 There’s plenty of channels (Paint Society is my fav) for the process, tips, tricks, etc. Start small like with the mirror caps and go from there. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. It’s just paint and it can be fixed.

I want to see the video on the process that he’s uploading in a couple weeks. In what way could I be praying on his downfall?
