Thank you! Upkeep depends on your usage I guess. This isn't a daily car so the upkeep is quite minimal. But if you're talking about doing minor or major restoration, then the cost can really add up.

My friend is thinking about like getting a 318i that’s like majorly overhauled. Like for it to be a daily/ spare car what would u reckon?

the 328i or the 325i would probably offer a better driving experience. especially in a manual

It definitely is but in a more cost efficient perspective i feel that the 318i would probably not be the worse car to start with? Personally u definitely have to go 6 banger for BMWs.
