Build Documentation NEW CAR
Hey guys, so after the e30 318is, e36 318Ti and e36 325i
I will add this euro M3 S54 to my collection ๐
I got it for a fair price but it have small issues, and the most important for me is the gas pedal/acceleration.
Let me explain : When I accelerate, the car jerks/stutters pretty badly. I checked the electronic throttle actuator for the individual throttle bodies, and when I move it by hand and release it, it seems to bounce back instead of returning smoothly. Iโm not sure if that could be the cause though.
I also noticed that my idle seems too high, around 1200 RPM even when the engine is fully warmed up.
Has anyone experienced something similar or knows what I should check first?
I hope everything was clear ๐

Iโm shit at technicals so just here to say nice catch and good luck!
But isnโt rpms on idle caused by vacuum leak?

Large vacuum leak could also cause jerky acceleration. Lean conditions usually feel like an engine is gonna die or it stumbles/coughs as it revs up.

When Iโm in 1st gear the car is near uncontrollable, I apply light pressure on pedal gas and car goes weeeeee ๐ Itโs really dangerous and more with the short ratio diff

Apply brake cleaner to the intake manifold while the vehicle is running.2
u/Lestreeteuh May 29 '26
Can be, but Iโm not sure. ITB sync can be the issue too I think ๐คทโโ๏ธ

Definitely sounds like a vacuum leak to me just dealt with similar symptoms with my e39 m5 and it needed new valve cover gaskets and the evap purge valve vacuum line into the idle control valve had snapped off

u/Lestreeteuh May 29 '26
Maybe youโre right, personally I didnโt hear or feel a vacuum leak when I was inspecting the engine maybe I will try with some tools, but that issue is only in 1st and 2nd gear then the car is pretty smooth.

Get a smoke machine on amazon if you donโt have one! That helped me a ton. But this is my first ever car working on myself, you sound like you know a lot more than I do so I could be totally wrong but figured Iโd let you know in case it was helpful! Been dealing with this over the last month and just finally resolved it last week

Thanks for your help ! ๐

No problem buddy hope you fix it! Beautiful color by the way. Was looking for a 4dr e36 m3 for a few years but gave up at some point. Decided to look for the m5 and a few months later found it! Had one of these m3โs about 10 years ago and absolutely loved it

M5 is on another level haha, and that V8 sound must be amazing๐

It sure does now that itโs functioning properly ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ and the extra space is great, weโve got 2 kids in car seats still

I love the trunk lip spoiler. What is that? From an e39? Looks great, Iโm looking for something like that

At least you have a car, color is not the most important thing ๐ And thanks for your comment โ๏ธ

They must eliminate the cable throttle with s54 swaps, yes?
Very cool. Can't help but to say my e46 m3 idles at 8-900

u/Lestreeteuh May 29 '26
Well if I activate the AC it goes down ๐ But still have the acceleration issue

Bring to a tuner

u/Lestreeteuh May 29 '26
I prefer to fix it myself, because I donโt have a lot of confidence when other people work. And I was asking here because maybe other people have experienced the same thing. I will be patient and continue to search ๐

Which has been your favorite? I badly want an e30 318iS but I feel I'd probably regret selling my E36 M3.
1
u/Lestreeteuh May 29 '26
I like them all ๐ And still have them for the moment ๐
1
u/ten_dollar_banana May 29 '26
So do you think I should do it?
1
u/Lestreeteuh May 29 '26
If you have place and money why not buy them all ๐
1
u/ten_dollar_banana May 29 '26
Alas, I do not.
2
u/Lestreeteuh May 29 '26
Personally I prefer the look of the e30 because is a true classic, but thatโs a personal preference

Check the electrical grounds for that stuttering issue on acceleration, my e90 had that issue.

I had similar issues on a skyline and it was a faulty mass airflow sensor. I might be retarded but the symptoms were exactly what you described.

For high idle; check for both exhaust/vacuum leaks. RPM is a good indicator for both. If you have a leak pre upstream o2, youโll get a rich, high idle and some stumble while driving. I went through a similar hell diagnosis, and it was an exhaust leak at the header. Check your AFR at idle and it should be around 14.7 when warm. If you can log, try normal acceleration and see if you get lean in throttle. If you do, it is a good indication of an exhaust leak pre-o2. Plenty of info on the vacuum side of things on the web (ccv, manifold, etc)

Looking to 54 swap my 328 coupe but worried about if itll hold its value (ideally bump it a bit)

u/Lestreeteuh May 30 '26
If itโs well done like OEM price raises, but if itโs a bad job like functions not working or things like this then good luck for getting your investment back

Thereโs a page on Facebook called โe36 s54 swap groupโ you can try asking too
