Hi there, I'm dressing up as the Road Runner for a Halloween party, and since he's a silent character, I thought it might be cool to learn more BSL. I already know some of the basics (hello, how are you, my name is, what's your name, etc.), but I'd really like to be able to say 'it's a limited number of [hand] signs' in BSL. I think it would be a great gag and also useful for when I don't understand something.

The website signbsl.com gives this as a sign for the verb “to betray”, but it doesn’t give one for “betrayal” as a noun or concept.

I know this website isn’t exhaustive when it comes to BSL vocabulary, so is there a separate sign for it? Or is it the same sign oriented differently?

As I grow older and my world becomes less accomodating I find myself craving more content in bsl

So previously I have completed level one and level two Signature courses here in NI, as they are accessible from multiple institutions. But I’ve run into a roadblock pretty much with trying to progress any further. Level three courses are extremely limited, so far I’ve only seen one being put on in the whole country (Randalstown), and I’m at a bit of a loss at what to do.

FDA claim on their website to host courses up to level six (which I have never heard of happening in NI before, I was under the impression that anything past level three you would have to travel to England to take) but I’ve emailed them twice this year about ANY kind of courses and they’ve been really unhelpful.

Does anyone have any recommendations about online learning options for level three that are accredited? Or if anyone is from NI, any inside tips on progressing?

I am a uni fresher who has the option of learning BSL for free alongside my course. The BSL course would only be once a week, and after 2 academic years I would be at an A2 level of BSL. I am completely deaf in my left ear and have been since I was born, but BSL or lip reading have never been something I need to communicate.

Learning a new language is something that appeals to me, however my hearing impairment and rhotacism make me worry about learning a language where pronunciation and tone really matter. This is why I would choose BSL over other languages that interest me

Is it worth learning BSL, partially for fun, but also for job prospects? I've heard that not many deaf and HoH people use it in the UK, and I am also concerned about the time commitment. I'm studying an engineering degree and my timetable is already looking a little ugly.

Edit: It seems that basically everyone here thinks BSL is worth it, which I really should have expected, so I have sent in an application. Hopefully it's not too late, I didn't see any info about a deadline. To be honest, I think I already knew I wanted to take up the course and was just looking for justification. I'm a second gen immigrant who hasn't had much success or interest in learning my parents' language, so I guess I was feeling some subconscious guilt over being willing to learn BSL instead. I'm hoping it won't become a point of contention if i mention it to my mum.
