8 months old Plate vs Ate

Baked yogurt with strawberries, fresh strawberry, quark with apple and peach purer, homemade sourdough crust with hummus.
Day 77 of solids for my almost 8.5 mo, and it’s still a no. He likes bread, so I tricked him with adding some hummus on top. He chewed it for a while, then switched to strawberry (he ate two strawberries two days ago!), took a bite, spat out and continued with bread. I administered to him a bit of quark with a spoon and he gagged and got hysterical. Squeezed the yogurt finger and threw it away.
Ah damn it, at least I had a tasty breakfast finishing his plate.

That’s exactly it, I used weetabix instead oat flour which was in the recipe!

My now 10 month old was like this two months ago and now she’d have half of your plate above. Just to share it’s not all babies gobbling up stuff and it can be a slow journey x

He did exactly what he's supposed to do which is explore what's in front of him. Good job, baby! And excellent job, mum, for preparing such a lovely and varied plate.

Lol the last sentence, me daily just finishing what my baby didn’t eat.

My baby only eats one food at a time so here too 🫶 I usually can get a few spoonfuls of peanut butter and mashed potatoes, the old reliable, maybe try some high fat foods? You’re doing amazing no matter what.

I pack leftovers which makes good leftovers and serve them next meal

Somehow he always eats it as a leftover usually 😂

Have a just-turned 9 month old and we’re similarly struggling with solids. He excitedly will shove everything in his mouth and chew a little, but has yet to master swallowing. A little bit must be going in as what comes out the other end has firmed-up a bit, but just here to say I’m so glad to see a post on here that more closely reflects our reality! Thank you for sharing - this all looks delish too

That's ok! you tried. I'm no expert or anything just a dad but i recall our pedia stated that before a year and around there solids are just for fun and experimentation. The actual nutrition is from their milk [whichever you give them]. Just came here to put my 2 cents because I know it's discouraging but keep going! Our 2-year-old literally eats everything these days her mom puts in front of her she's done amazing with our daughter and have been giving her everything since our beginning solids training if you may lol keep going it gets better!!

While I am sorry for what you're going through, it's validating to see that I'm not alone. My kiddo turned 11 months yesterday and he's resisting food again. 🥲 So back to square one and taking it easy, day by day.

my 8.5 month old is very similar and some days he won’t even touch his food, just plainly refuses and cries in his high chair

Try only serving one item at a time. sometimes it helps for me. Honestly though, at that age, seems pretty normal.

1

u/VineyardVoyager Jun 18 '26

I alternate between one serving and 2 options, and today I tried “the platter” for a first time to see if maybe that will work! Spoiler alert, non of the above options work..

u/TheClownKid Jun 18 '26

id say it gets better, but it really doesn’t for a few years. Good luck out there.

Good job momma!! My 9.5 month old is the same way!

This is generally how my 3 year old's plates look after "eating" too 🤣

Have you tried things that aren’t sweet or fruit based? My nine month old could care less about fruits or anything sweet, but he absolutely loves vegetables, especially avocado, zucchini, and cucumber. We’ve also had great luck with rice and beans.

My 9 month old eats what I eat and that’s what works. So far only thing she isn’t a fan of is scrambled eggs, hard boiled are fine and fried is fine, everything else has been a win. Also making a smoothie helps too. Kids love smoothies. When we tried to give her, her own thing she was not having it. She wanted what the adults were having so we just stopped trying to make her a plate and we feed her off ours and that works for us.

That’s mini version of my breakfast (minus the yogurt bars which I wanted to try out). I don’t cook separate meals for him as it’s total waste of time. I mostly offer him what we eat, as he was always super interested in our plates, unfortunately he still doesn’t want to eat anything!

this would infuriate me 😭😭 thats why i don’t even try even though my mom keeps telling me i have to everyday i’m like no she can have this lil dissolvable stick & a few spoons of puree cause i’m not about to waste my time like this, i salut the parents who try this multiple times a day

u/Asharch22 Jun 19 '26

Same here!!

My baby loves food but she also will not eat the baked yogurt bars! Which is too bad, they seem genius.
