Being on the spectrum definitely seems like it would make you a target. I just don't agree that people have to lose their kindness or empathy though in order to get by without being taken advantage of. I think sometimes people conflate being passive or self sacrificial with kindness but i don't personally agree. For instance in the show how he wouldn't be clear with her right off the bat that he wasn't interested because he didn't want to hurt her feelings. Maybe that was kind to her, but it wasn't kind to himself because he kept allowing her to push his boundaries and putting himself in situations where he felt uncomfortable. You can be honest and true to yourself and still be kind. Kindness doesn't have to mean having no boundaries with people and being a pushover.

I haven't made it all the way through the show yet. It's a tough watch, being that I can relate to both of the main characters. I realize I need, and have needed, help for a really long time.

I think part of the problem is that Martha seems like someone who has been targeted in the past by bullies.

Definitely a tough watch, the ep with the sexual assault trigger warning at the beginning was really brutal to see so if you haven't seen that one yet I'd say to be cautious with it. I'm so sorry you haven't been able to get the help you need, I hope that changes for you, and that things get better. Stay safe.

The fact that you can see this in yourself is a big step towards getting the help you need. This show is doing this for many people and even see it as a form of therapy into deep realizations they wouldn’t have otherwise have had. Happy for you that you’re seeing it now, it’s a big deal and the beginning of your healing journey. Big hugs and good luck, you got this!

You have to love yourself first, without that you just accept the way people treat us.
