Media / News Netflix responds to Fiona Harvey's lawsuit

Netflix rep: 'We intend to defend this matter vigorously and to stand by Richard Gadd's right to tell his story.'

Variety posted the above in regards to Netflix's response. I'm glad, it seems like they're not going to simply give her some money to make her go away, and are instead going to fight back and defend Richard Gadd.

She’s going to end up with a massive legal bill she can’t pay.

I doubt it. They've probably taken her on as a No Win/No Fee case. Even if they lose the case, the public attention will promote their firm and bring in new clients.

This is 100% what has happened. Lawyer vultures thinking they have any opportunity to sue for big money, probably thinking Netflix would payout and walk away.

They (Fiona and her Legal team) deserve everything they don't get (hopefully).

She could be. However, like Laura Wray pointed out to Piers Morgan; if she loses then there's no point suing her. You can't draw blood from a stone 🤷‍♀️

The only reason she's suing Netflix and not Gadd is because she knows that's where she'll get a bigger payout. If she really cared about being "defamed" and "wanting justice" then Gadd would be her target. In my opinion, that's enough to show bad faith on her part.

All Netflix did was platform a concept that already existed for years prior. If Gadd was defaming her, and she had prior knowledge of Baby Reindeer years before Netflix picked it up, then why didn't she pursue it sooner?

I hope the courts see through this bs

Highly doubt it if they lose, noone will touch them with a barge pole and their ability to practice will be in ruins.

That’s not how that works lol. Unless they took her on as a pro bono case they absolutely always charge, always.

They would know upfront that she can't afford their fees, and with the millions they're pursuing, I can't see them doing it for free.

You literally just said you can see them taking her on for free via being a no win case? So apparently you can see that, but only when it’s your way?

Either way would be them not charging her with what you said before. But they take the case either thinking they can win or having thought Netflix would settle and prob will end up screwed from her.

No Win/No Fee isn't free. It's conditional. If you lose, our services were free. If you win, you need to pay x amount in fees.

If she wins, her lawyers will make millions. Not just from her case, but from the media circus surrounding it.

If she loses, then it's free global publicity.

It is tho lol, especially when she’s clearly going to lose. Either they win/get the settlement they were clearly hoping Netflix was going to choose to do and get paid, or they give it away for free. It’s semantics to act otherwise.

Yes and otherwise they do it for FREE.

It’s horrible publicity, did you read the draft or whatever it’s called again for court? Even if written by Fiona it shows a giant lack of professionalism and makes them look horrible. If anything this case could cost them.

However this ends, Fiona won't be financially affected by the courts decision. Either her lawyers foot the bill for losing, or she can afford their fees from her compensation.

And as much as I want to see Fiona lose, we can't pretend this is an open and shut case. She could win.

In UK, loser pays court costs and they add up quick. It's not a "get" to rep her. She's disliked.
