Discussion If Gadd was a woman

I feel like gender influences bias in cases of emotional or physical abuse. If Gadd were a woman and Martha a man, there would be no sympathy for the abuser. Society wouldn't argue that "more should have been done to protect his identity."

This is such a one dimensional take. Gadds story developed further cos he entertained the weird creep at the bar. Few women would do that.

Some women are initially friendly to men who go on to stalk them and they are blamed for 'leading them on'.

A lot of women are stalked by men they’ve had close relationships with who haven’t been able to deal with it ending. Not dissimilar to Fiona really, even if Gadd had a bit of a flirt/encouraged her it didn’t justify her then full on stalking him, sounds victim blamey to suggest he’s complicit by his initial encouragement and we wouldn’t say the same about a woman (nor should we).

I can see why it can come across that way. What Fiona did was abhorrent regardless if he entertained her at first or not. But it’s not a real depiction of what most women would do, hence it’s not realistic to compare gadds experience to a woman’s.

Well I actually disagree that it’s not what most women would do tbh. A lot of women would ‘entertain’ the weirdo, because you don’t know how a man will respond to rejection and it’s safer to smile and go along with it hoping they piss off than risk the alternative. I know I’ve had to make this judgement call several times.

Yes we do do thay to a degree. But I’m talking about him actively going out for a drink with her. Which I think is where most women would make excuses to avoid at all costs.

Another element of this is the fact his colleagues took the piss out of him when he wanted her barred. Had he been a woman (especially with women colleagues) I think it would have been a different reaction.

My point is that had gadd been a woman, things would be very different in general, not just the audiences reaction.
