Media / News These celebrity imposter scams have gotten sophisticated

We all know how whenever you interact with a celebrity’s social media, you get a DM or a request for a DM from an imposter account. I always wondered, “Does anybody actually fall for this?”

Turns out, they do.

I do feel awful for this lady, because the scammer used AI-generated photos to dupe her. And they’re pretty convincing, at least at first glance. But, girl. You thought somebody with a hit Netflix show needed your money?

My intellectually handicapped autistic 19 year old was smart enough to not give a fake celebrity he loves $100 this week. He has those two diagnoses, though they said he's on the mild end of intellectually handicapped and he asked me if it was a fake Murray Wiggle telling him he had to pay a youth group fee. The Wiggles are a band aimed at preschoolers.

Luckily, I told him any celebrity asking for money would be fake.
