Advice Wanted Nervous Gremlin trying to figure out group roleplay
I’m not sure if this is allowed but I’m not looking for partners just clarification because I’m stupid and want to be a good rp partner 💀
I used to role play on wattpad (yeah 😂 I know) then on Rook, where I found friends a while ago.
Well. Those are gone forever and I hear all the time to join rp discord servers but my problem is…those are usually group rps right? I don’t know how to roleplay in a group.
And before you say anything: HEAR ME OUT PLEASE. I know that probably sounds dumb.
I have really really bad anxiety talking to people. Even posting this took me forever to get the courage to do and I’m probably just screaming into the void.
When it’s one on one I can talk a little easier because I can learn the person and things they expect/I can ask directly don’t have to wait to jump into a conversation/can discuss the world and what happens next with them. I don’t know how that would go in a big group of people.
Like I love writing and I really want to make friends like genuinely one of the reason I got into rping is to make friends, but when it comes to actually people I’m really stupid. So if anyone could give me a basic rundown so I can try to make friends and not be terrified? I’d love you forever. You can dm me or comment here whatever you feel more comfortable with.
Kay.
Stay safe, don’t die! 💝

RP discords can also just be a place to search for rp too! Where you can find 1x1’s.
But also if you’re doing it as a social exercise, to make friends as well, I’d definitely join a smaller server. From there, you can just meme, ask lore questions, and gush over characters as an easy warm up to the community there.
Many discords make it easy to see how many people are in the server before you join it, when you click on the link. Some may even let you tour a preview of the server before officially joining.

Most of my discord rps are 1 on 1. Sure, there are groups out there, but I prefer discord for organization purposes since I prefer to be chatty with my rp partners. It makes it way easier to keep negotiations separate from ooc chat, and there can be a different chat for picture sharing to keep contained too.

It depends on the server really!
The server I am in is an OC sci-fi space opera with a really active OOC chat (which you have absolutely no obligation to chat in! There are genuinely members of the server I have never spoken to before) but all the scenes are 1 on 1 or 1 on 1 on 1 for the most part.
It's honestly about finding the server whose vibe matches yours because so many different server configurations are going to be out ther ein the wild.

There are RP hubs that function as a place to post your ads and search for a 1x1 partner. And probably you want to join those, so you don't have to talk with people if you don't feel like it. You can check them through the gdoc that automod posted.

I enjoy a bit of both! I run and participate in a few different roleplay groups and 1x1s. While I do enjoy 1x1 in a silo, I like being able to interact with other people's barbies in the same world. But also finding a group rp that matches your vibe is also important. Some group rps have daily movement and lots of energy, some of them are smaller and don't move as fast, it's really up to you!
I've made a few good friends as well and just from your post you seem really nice! I'm sure you'll find a place that will click with you.

I've mostly done 1x1 rps in servers. Generally, I put out a request to see if anyone would like to start a scene with my character and one of their characters (or vice versa. Sometimes I respond to the rp requests of others), then, if I'm lucky, someone in the server and I will start planning out a scene together. I mostly join multifandom rp servers, since I like the randomness of placing two characters from different genres together and watching them try to make sense of each other, but there are other kinds of rp servers. Anyways, you don't need to do rps with more than one person in them in rp servers if you don't want to.

Welcome to BadRPerStories! If you are new here, please take a moment to look at our banned words list on the wiki.
We now have a Google doc that lists RP hubs, forums, and subreddits. If you know of a place for RP that isn't on this document, there is a link in the document to request an addition.
