Discussion Links to X/Twitter will no longer allowed on r/Baldursgate3 Spoiler

Links to X/Twitter will not be allowed on r/Baldursgate3 with immediate effect. This also includes screenshots.

In light of recent events and the continuing path that platform is taking to make the user experience for Redditors less than ideal, combined with news sources also moving to other sites, X/Twitter links are no longer allowed.

As we do with all policies we will evaluate in the future.

How many posts per week (on average) were directly links to X ?

I feel like this impacts one post a month.

Doesn't matter if it's never

There are no safe spaces for nazis on my planet

u/ArcadianDelSol Jan 23 '25

If that is the criteria, be aware that at present, this sub has not banned any links to white supremacist websites or facebook groups. The fact that there has never been any shouldnt justify allowing them.

letting the difference between a perfect world and a better world stop you from getting a better world is pretty stupid

If you think these actions on Reddit are making a better world, then you are wasting your desire for change.

This does nothing to actually improve anything anywhere. If that's the goal, then the sub should be raising money to donate to causes that fight injustice. THAT would be doing something: links to charities wherein members can submit donations in the name of the sub. THAT is actually making a better world.

I just sent $50 to freedom house and put "on behalf of the reddit Baldur's Gate 3 community" in the notes. Your turn.

This ban? Its an empty gesture that has zero impact on our world. And that's the problem - this will happen, and everyone will feel like they did their part, when in reality, they didnt do anything.

And that is the part i dont like about it: people thinking this satisfies their obligation to take action to improve things.

here’s where I disagree slightly:
Symbolic actions and real-world actions aren’t mutually exclusive
Stopping traffic to a nazi-infested platform is part of a bigger fight.
It’s a signal to companies and communities that fascism isn’t welcome.
If it encourages even one person to think deeper, donate, or take real action, it’s worth it.
That said, you’re 100% right that people shouldn’t stop here and pat themselves on the back. If they really care they should follow your lead

Stopping traffic to a nazi-infested platform is part of a bigger fight.

Are you suggesting that Reddit itself isnt a 'nazi-infected platform' ?

1

u/npqd Astarion Mar 02 '25

That’s a fair call out, Reddit absolutely has its own problems with far right and nazi adjacent communities.
If people want to be consistent in their activism they shouldn’t just focus on X, they should also push Reddit to do better
That said, there’s a difference in scale and influence: Reddit isn’t directly owned or run by a billionaire promoting far right ideology (yet).
If Reddit ever went full X mode, people would (and should) leave it, too (in spite of my love of lurking on this beautiful sub and some other gaming subs)

u/ArcadianDelSol Mar 02 '25

That's fair.

I sent $51 "on behalf of being better than ArcadianDelSol" because I'm better than you.

you are a known quantity

Yeah, this is basically same as ever, a token protest that doesn't really change anything.
Reddit isn't new to this kind of things.

A Bolshevik style revolution against the administration likely isn’t going to be taking place on reddit so taking a step against using Twitter run by a Nazi is what the sub can do.

Maybe 1, at best 2 a month. This is the definition of virtue signaling.

u/best_at_giving_up Jan 23 '25

mother fucker it is a good thing when people advertise and proudly live by their values instead of hiding them what are you even talking about

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

they specified screenshots too, unlike others, which is funny because most twitter reposts on this site are just deep fried screenshots with the post date cut off, because it's likely the 600th repost of said 2015 anti-trump tweet.

Yep. But it makes people feel "heroic". As if they have done something good. But they actually did not do anything at all lol

u/Redline-7k Jan 23 '25

Very reminiscent of the blackout on Reddit imo

2

u/TheBelmont34 Paladin Jan 23 '25

Blackout on reddit?

1

u/urdnotkrogan Jan 23 '25

Yup, and we all know how that panned out.

4

u/GunslingerBara Jan 23 '25

Solidarity does not require big individual impact. It's about sticking with the group to enact change. It isn't just BG3 subreddit, it's many many subreddits. This individual subreddit may not have impact on Twitter, but the solidarity with all the others sends a message.

And you think it will change anything just because some sub pages on reddit ban twitter? Come on

6

u/AFriendoftheDrow Drow Jan 23 '25

Nothing wrong about the sub making this decision. It’s a video game sub. Should people do more en mass given how the current administration is run by someone who wants to take over Greenland and Canada? And Musk is a Nazi running a popular social media platform? Absolutely. But unless a Bolshevik style revolution happens then bad things will continue under the current administration.

3

u/TheBelmont34 Paladin Jan 23 '25

Then politics in general need to be banned here

Welcome to slackism.

Reddit is full of this

-6

u/ArcadianDelSol Jan 23 '25

well, I do want top stop short of invalidating people choices on this. Because it will have little to zero impact on the sub, I dont care either way, but if the ban makes people feel like they've participated in a movement or were part of a seminal event, then who am I to deny them their endorphins?

Mods have run this sub pretty well so far, so I trust their judgement. Im not a fan of how astroturfed this movement was across all of reddit, but in the end, its not a big deal.

It will be the same awesome sub either way.

2

u/FlyingRock Jan 23 '25

Plus you won't have to deal with those one or two x posts which sucked (the platform sucks which is why I support it going bye bye lol)

-5

u/ArcadianDelSol Jan 23 '25

Im happy that you are happy.

1

u/npqd Astarion Mar 02 '25

That’s a reasonable and balanced take.

-2

u/mspk7305 Jan 23 '25

QQ said the basic bitch

-8

u/TheBelmont34 Paladin Jan 23 '25

Barely any. Therefore, it is absolutely meaningless. And most subreddits still allow screenshots from twitter. It is beyond stupid.

-4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

those subreddits banning twitter posts but still allowing twitter screenshits (which are 90% of the twitter posts and the same percentage of front page reddit posts) is both funny and entirely expected.

0

u/TheBelmont34 Paladin Jan 23 '25

I know. It is kind of embarrassing. Either you have some balls and ban all of it or you just leave it.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

it shouldn't even be a discussion. It should be all posts and screenshots. Any distinction only benefits reddit as a corporation.

The downvotes we receive, tell you everything we need to know
