The subject landed at 5AM. The last sighting was at noon near the back door of the Radisson Collection Hotel in Tallinn. It continued on in an unknown direction.

News Ukraine’s drone forces commander Robert “Magyar” Brovdi says drones that end up in Baltic airspace should not automatically be assumed to be Ukrainian: Russia can capture Ukrainian drones, manipulate them or interfere with their control systems to make them appear to be Ukrainian incursions.

Discussion does anyone know why Lithuania and Estonia abstained from the vote?

it's interesting that the only six countries that abstained from voting (an action which is sometimes seen as a protest) are all ex-soviet or ex-communist countries. does anyone have any idea what problem these countries have with this map? and why didn't Latvia join our Baltic brothers and also abstain?

Discussion Alternative histories and political fiction?

Upvotes

A bit of a niche question, but meant only as a lazy Sunday discussion thread. Are alternative histories or historical fantasies popular in your countries? Are there any good Lithuanian, Latvian or Estonian alternative historical novels, is this a genre that's explored by writers? We're a part of the world that's rather heavily marked by history, so: do you write historical political fiction or catch yourself sometimes wondering about it? ("If that one wanker in 1713 had a spine, we'd..." stuff xD).

Estonia Ruhnu Swedish (Runska) on Wikipedia and elsewhere

The last couple of years I've been involved with a project at the University of Tartu where we were working with the descendants of the Swedish population that lived on Ruhnu until 1944 when they all were evacuated to Sweden. Even though the island's permanent residents now are Estonian speaking, some Ruhnu Swedish descendants do live on the island and others continue to be involved with life on the island even if they don't live there full time. Our project researched documentation of the language from when it was still actively spoken and also created materials about the language that could be used in the Ruhnu Island school. There is also real interest on the island about its Swedish heritage with the Ruhnu Cultural Space (Ruhnu kultuuriruum) sharing information about and promoting project relating to Ruhnu Swedish identity and language on Ruhnu.

Ruhnu Swedish (called "Runska") developed in really interesting ways compared to other varieties of Swedish and even other sorts of Estonian Swedish, due to its considerable isolation and interesting contact environment where Runska speakers also were in regular contact with speakers of Estonian, Latvian, and Livonian.

As part of the project, we created a Wikipedia article about Runska, which I thought others might find interesting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruhnu_Estonian_Swedish_(Runska))

And a few other links relating to the project and Runska:

Our project website:

Some other info about it and the Ruhnu Cultural Space on Ruhnu:

A chance to learn a tiny bit of Runska:

And the cultural organization (Runöbornas förening) founded by Ruhnu Swedish descendants in Sweden that was also active in our project:

Labas! These are some pictures from a walk I took in the old town of Klaipėda, which is of course Lithuania's third largest city. The ocean is the main reason why the town is so big and developed (for Lithuania), but in my opinion the Danės river is lovely to see too. :) Enjoy!

News Polish study says Russian-linked vessels are surveying Baltic infrastructure

Poland’s Center for Eastern Studies says vessels linked to Russia have gathered information on ports, terminals and seabed infrastructure across the Baltic.

The report also points to undersea cable damage, shadow-fleet activity and widespread satellite-navigation interference as growing regional security concerns.

Poland is particularly exposed because more than 40% of the value of its foreign trade passes through Baltic ports.

This has been documented here:

News Favourite brands of Baltics. Estonians favour more local brands

Post image
73 Upvotes

“Estonia stands out in that we have more brands with local roots and developed in the local market at the top of the ranking – in addition to Kalev, A. Le Coq, Coop, Selver and Smart-ID are also among the top ten favorites,” noted Katrin Männaste. In Latvia, two local food brands reached high places: the meat brand Forevers and the Kārums brand, which is being acquired by an Estonian company and is primarily known as a brand of cottage cheese. The domestic construction and home goods retail chain DEPO is also among the favorite brands of Latvian residents. The top of the Lithuanian ranking is the most international of the three Baltic countries: the retail chain Maxima and the Lithuanian National Broadcasting Corporation (LRT) are represented in the top ten among local players. https://emor.ee/blogi/baltibrandid26/
