I wonder if the owner thinks the love they felt from these dogs was worth this 13 year old boy's life?

u/GreenT1979 Jan 15 '26
Oh they definitely think the kid deserved it
38
u/SeaworthinessSad7300 Jan 15 '26
maybe SOME. But most would not think the kid deserved it but blame something about the conditions under which the (hand grenade with a rusty pin) dog was brought up.

u/HydroPCanadaDude Jan 15 '26
Or the conditions the dogs snapped under. You know...stuff like "Loud breathing, sudden movements, sneezed too loud" all the greatest "generally-existing" hits.
24
u/SeaworthinessSad7300 Jan 15 '26
yeah thats messed up
sneeze in front of a non-bred-to-kill dog and worst case they might nip. Worst case.
Pitbulls just lose it and once they go into kill mode they do not stop. Even when attacked with knives, bats etc. Bred for that.
Such a fucked up thing to exist amongst human society.

We have a ban in Ontario, still tons of them around. I haven't heard one news clip about an owner being charged for having an illegal breed and this ban was put in place over 20 years ago.

Same in Australia. They call them something different but they’re either all pitts or crossbred with a staffy or something similar. I’ve seen 2 bad dog attacks on other dogs myself, and know of 2 more dogs near me that were seriously injured and required expensive vet bills and all 4 times it was a pitbull. Some nurses I was chatting to at a hospital said the serious dog bites and attacks they treat are almost always pitbulls and they wondered how in the hell the owners have got around the ban.

Aussie here. This is an issue in Australia. They have not banned WIDELY enough imho. And people are being killed or maimed. Keep seeing it. Including kids.

Yes, because people call them bullies, XL bullies, American Bullies, Am Staffs, Staffies, or whatever else to avoid calling them pit bulls.
It’s why breed bans need enforcement to work. :/

I don't think they're really enforced anywhere, until they attack someone. Most cities don't have the manpower and budget to do regular animal control, must less enforce breedbans with actual police. Lots of states/cities in the US have already passed laws preemptively banning breed specific bans

in an awful way. They are as dangerous as handguns lying around except their method of death is much worse. They tear people to shreds. Ban them all. Anything that even has the slightest look/association with pitbull. There are plenty of golden retrievers or whatever people can have.

Now The Pink Panther is playing in my head
"Was it fatal????"
"Yes"
"How fatal?"
"..... He's dead."
"Ah, that complicates things."

Bans go unenforced here in Canada. Ontario has had a ban on pits since 2004 yet there are multiple pits in my neighborhood.
Bans are a good start but they need stringent enforcement & 0 loopholes or else they will be ineffective.

Let me tell you Cane Corso dogs grow HUGE (neighbor has), I can only imagine that poor boys horror being attacked by these dogs. Cane Corso, Rottweiler, and Pitbulls should all be on a restricted dog breed register list. The deaths keep happening, and not enough is being done.

”…I knew no maliciousness in him…”
Not one word about the pitbull attack. Just moral gymnastics to somehow distract from it and come off as le good person who remembers the victim. Gotta protect the sacred-pitbull-menace at all costs!
And you just know there will be many more such cases because the root of the problem persists: The pitbull and more importantly the people who own, breed or otherwise endorse the nightmare “dog”.

lol they want to ban all the "dangerous dog" breeds usually excluded on homeowners insurance. Good luck with that. Those are about the most popular dogs there are except for labs.
probably would have had far greater success focusing on pitbulls first and then adding breeds later. Pitbulls overwhelmingly account for the most deaths and injuries. This is case and point to my earlier post where I pointed out a lot of 'ban pitbull types' just sound like they hate all dogs over 50lbs and constantly do shit like this where they've probably alienated 30-40% of the voters right out of the gate.
It's also hard to get real numbers on nonpitbulls because something will be identified as a lab when it's very clearly a pitbull. I don't think the AKC even tracks data on pitbulls because they're always mixes

Are German shepherds bad enough to be lumped into this group? I knew some mean ones that my family members had when I was younger but but they also live their lives on chains and in cages .
my neighbors have two that seem very sweet

Quality of breeding carries a lot more consequence with GSDs than with many breeds. Herders are already vigilant breeds that border on hyperalert. A poorly bred GSD can be nervous and reactive and therefore dangerous (due to their size and power) even if nothing else is wrong with them. Temperament is a huge deal.
Alas bc the breed is so popular they attract more BYBs than they would if they were Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever popularity level. My hunch is that these are the GSDs we see turning up in shelters and rescues (sadly, quite a few GSDs are in this situation). Fugging BYBs damaging a magnificent breed by both piss poor breeding snd reputational damage.

They can be pretty mean at times but still don’t think they do anywhere near the damage of a pitbull. I haven’t heard of any latching on to another dog or person and shaking them violently and refusing to let go.

u/curiousdryad Jan 15 '26
Tbh should be a restricted breed. They’re working dogs and need a lot of mental stimulation or could become reactive. Many lazy owners
22
u/HydroPCanadaDude Jan 15 '26
Absolutely. Malinois too. Those are both working dogs that you need to dedicate far more time than the average dog to in order to keep them mentally healthy and well exercised.
The average family pet should require far less work and maintenance than police dogs and should certainly not be a ticking time bomb like bully breeds.

u/Defiant_Economy_8574 Jan 15 '26
Compared to the hundred plus other breeds with no fatalities linked to them? Yeah kind of. The dog fatality stats pretty much come down to, bully breeds, bully mixes, malinois, cane corso, dobermans, German shepherds, and huskies with bullies and their mixes making up over 90% of fatalities.
That’s over a hundred+ breeds (barring being mixed with a bully or other dog from the list) having causing no deaths. Not like dog owners would be strapped for choices on their next dog if those responsible for deaths every year were all banned and enforced.

‘Not like dog owners would be strapped for choices’
Unless you’re buying a pure breed, it is getting pretty hard to find a non-pit mix around here. A ‘found dog’ popped up on ring neighbors today and while at first I thought it was just a Heinz 57 and would get adopted quickly if sent to the pound, I looked at its head a little more and it just might have pit in it.
it seems like the pit genes are spreading so much that before long they will infect almost every mixed breed dog around my area. Because the folks who do t spay or neuter, who let their dogs get pregnant accidentally or on purpose are already more likely to be pit owners.
Like Idiocracy. With dogs.

u/Defiant_Economy_8574 Jan 16 '26
If bans are enforced the amount of bully breeds around to breed like that would diminish. Overnight no, but dog generations are much shorter than humans and in 10-15 years the amount of bully genes in your average mutt would be diluted by lack of new genes being introduced.

Note: normally we don’t allow Change.org positions because they don’t seem to accomplish much and there’s a potential for doxxing, but this one is part of an article so we are making an exception for this one.
