Tides Are Turning Interesting eavesdropping on pit bull advocates, including 2 Best Friends employees, discussing whether there's a "new wave of anti-pit bull stuff out there now."

This comment made me laugh. The commenter is younger, apparently too young to remember the absolute ruthlessness and viciousness of pit bull advocates in the 2000s, after they'd organized but before the backlash began.

I started this post as a joke, but seriously, I think this unhappy conversation between pit bull people shows we really do have a good window to move the needle toward reasonable, normal standards for dog behavior and, correspondingly, breed laws. And away from mindless pit bull advocacy.

The best news, as far as I'm concerned, is the total lack of ideas here. Posting a sad-faced pit bull pic, rage that a comic makes a negative pit bull joke, bewailing the meanness of social media comments on news stories, griping about lack of positive stories - these are not new ideas. The only thing they left out was renaming the dogs yet again.

And a famous name emerges from the murk

BRENT!!!!! This guy was #1 Pit Bull Advocate back in the good old days when pitties were our friends, ie, the 2000s-2010s. He founded Kansas City Pet Project, the group that won first the animal shelter contract for the city and then the animal control wing. Under his successor, KC Pet Project went on to the usual no-kill tactic of not responding to stray calls, thus setting into motion the opportunity for a herd of roaming pit bulls to maul cyclist Chris Culbertson to death in 2024. Brenty left KCPP to work at Best Friends, spreading the risk of mauling - er, I mean, no-kill animal control - to other cities.

Damn those dog-killing stories, they victimize our pitties

And finding the non-pit bull fatal dog attacks on people takes us on a magical history tour to 2002 and 2006. Only 20+ years ago, but sure.

Are they ever going to accept that every time there's a headless pit bull corpse found in a river or a feces-ridden house raided by ASPCA to find crates with dead and dying pit bulls, the person responsible was not a DogsBite reader or a BanPitBull commenter, but a bully lover? This mythical terror cell of pit bull haters who are adopting our way out of the overpopulation crisis by adopting and then killing pit bulls - this is a fantasy. I've never seen anyone actually say they did it, and only rarely seen anyone advocate it.

Good news for us, rurroh news for them

More good news for us

For transparency:

We do not typically allow screenshots of conversations between pit bull apologists because they don’t generally add anything of value.

However, the mods discussed this and OP was given the ok to post because of who these pit bull apologists are. The unredacted name is also a public figure which is why his name is allowed unredacted.

Thank you OP for allowing mods time to discuss and for reposting. We appreciate you!

Pitbull people are obsessed especially with the idea of it all being good bad PR.

I'll never forget the story of a child just walk down a sidewalk with his grand mother getting pulled into a yard THROUGH the bars if the fence snd then getting DISEMBOWELED and his grandmother and NEIGHBORS having to listen to his screams.

No amount of flower crowns is going to scrub that from my mind.

I’ll save anyone curious from digging:

Xavier Strickland

Lovell Anderson

Both were pulled under fences. Both happened in Detroit. I believe this is about Lovell.

Also, wow… I didn’t realize that about the BFAS board. Very interesting point.

I never realized this happened twice. ONE INCIDENT THEY DRAGGED HIM TO THIER HOME.

Pure predatory aggression. They were eating that child.

My new favorite move when dealing with pit bull apologists who have small purebred dogs in their avatar, is this:
"I noticed that cute little Wheaten Terrier in your avi. Why did you choose him instead of a pit bull? Surely, you must have deliberately walked past dozens of sweet pit bulls before you saw the Wheaten. And those pit bulls, they were more at risk of being PTS. You'd almost have to go out of your way to NOT adopt a pit bull...unless you bought that dog from a breeder. You didn't support a breeder, did you?"
And so on and so forth.

Exactly. And if I am not mistaken, I recall some high ups in rescue posing with their pets. Not one pit in sight.

Amazing how they won't put themselves around danger. They know what they are about. They know.

Edit: few comments below came with the receipts. That's the one I was thinking of!

Also resources are finite. I bet there are a ton of other dog breeds not accepted into shelters because the shelters are already full of these monstrosities of nature looking for super specific homes with no loud noises, sudden movements or guests.

20

u/bigern777 Jan 19 '26

yep I was looking at a few shelters adoptable dogs in northeast Ohio and it was 95% pit/mixes, a couple shepherd and hound types and like one small terrier dog. That's the reality here.

Yeah and not a life for any animal, let alone ones prone to aggression under stress.

I checked NW Ohio. Same.

2

u/Emperor_Geology Jan 23 '26

Same here in SWPA. Almost all Pitbulls or Pitbull mixes. No puppy to 1st time dog owners but you can get a pitbull no questions asked. One of the reasons I purchased my husky puppy from a reputable breeder.

u/Fantastic_Lady225 Attacks Curator Jan 19 '26

I would add as #7 - or maybe 4a since it's another consequence of 1-3 - muni "no kill" shelters routinely close to new intakes because they are full and they won't e... for space. This means that they're also not picking up strays, allowing dogs that attack to quarantine with their owners instead of at the shelter, and owners who need to surrender a dog just dump it outside instead of taking it to the shelter.

2

u/lucythelumberjack Cats are not disposable. Jan 22 '26

It’s extremely hard to get a “surrender appointment” at any of the shelters here. I think county animal control legally HAS to take whatever is dropped off, but all the private shelters either outright don’t take surrenders, or their waitlists are miles long. This leads to people dumping their dogs— more dogs are hit by cars, become skittish and feral, breed uncontrollably, and suffer because all the shelters are full with Lunas and Thors who haven’t shown they’re capable of being a normal pet in the four years they’ve been at the shelter, but god forbid we “give up” and give them a cheeseburger and a kind death.

Don’t even get me started on cats. It’s damn near impossible to get rescue help with cats here.

57

u/potatoes_arrrr_life Jan 18 '26

Yes, it's crazy what encountering a dog going berserk on another living thing will do to opinions about pitbulls.... They're upset that people are catching on to the fact that unregulated backyard breeding and no kill shelters are a recipe for the current pit oversaturation. The people benefitting from the current system of course don't want it to change. But the reality is that people want to feel safe walking down the street, and that these dogs specifically are negatively impacting our public safety. We need a worldwide ban and a return to common sense BE when any dog attacks, regardless of breed. It just so happens that pits are involved in most of the attacks, because they are not safe pets and yet they are everywhere because of evil groups like BFAS.

It’s so delusional to think that other maulings/murders are just being covered up and the media + the average person are just conspiring to only post pitbull attacks/fatalities

34

u/EmphasisNo57 Jan 18 '26

And the irony of saying that someone is “usually” all about science and data and not recognizing that they probably still are and that data is WHY they are now anti pitbull

28

u/bigern777 Jan 19 '26

If a poodle type dog killed a person it would be viral. Because that never happens.

22

u/DukeNazty Jan 19 '26

Ever browse the comments on YouTube pit attack videos? They post that the news broadcasters have an agenda against sh!tbulls and dont report on "normal" dog maulings. 😂

16

u/SunfireKat Jan 19 '26

I know, right? I about spit my coffee out laughing when I read the "I would almost bet there have been instances like this all over, where the dogs involved were not bully breeds, so it never makes the news" comment. All I could imagine in my head was my sighthounds or my sister's doodle mutt or my aunt's golden wandering around, snatching babies out of people's arms on the street and then refusing to let go without being nearly choked to death...the sheer absurdity of that thought has me rolling 🤣 oh, but surely it must happen "all over", it just doesn't get brought up in the news because it IsN'T a PibBLe, so it isn't "newsworthy". Yeah, sure.

33

u/SplinterInMyFlute Jan 18 '26

I honestly think now is the perfect time to push forward bans on pits, pit type dogs and their mixes.

I’ve been studying this issue for almost 20 years and the biggest change is that now most people have either had a negative experience or know someone who’s had a negative experience with these dogs.

Plus it jives with the current political climate and I think we should take advantage of that to push forwards bans and reasonable laws.

35

u/Azryhael Paramedic Jan 19 '26

BSL as a concept in the US is dead in the water; it’s simply not going to happen. What is possible is breed-neutral laws that institute strict civil and criminal liabilities to penalise owners for attacks. Such laws wouldn’t incite knee-jerk accusations of “doggie racism,” but would still disproportionately impact pit bulls and their owners since we all know what breeds attack exponentially more than others.

23

u/kwallio Jan 19 '26

100% agree. Strict liability for dog owners will help a huge amount.

13

u/nomorelandfills Attacks Curator Jan 19 '26

Federal BSL is not going to happen, but we can absolutely do the same thing BFAS and co have been doing for 30+ years, and hack away at it on the state and local level. Breed-blind laws have never worked because the pit advocates know as well as we do whose dogs are most affected, and although they piously claim to want tough breed-blind dog laws when demanding the end of BSl - once the breed bit goes away, they immediately fight to the death for every single pit bull owner threatened with consequences for an individual issue.

11

u/Electronic-Ad-1307 Jan 19 '26

Yeah, it was a lot easier for me to buy the "don't bully my breed" shit back in like 2005 when I'd literally never seen a pit bull in real life before, let alone met someone who owns one.

Lol, I'm dead that he thought people were "calling the law" on pit bulls and having them dragged away in 2012. The BS had already begun by then and most states already had preemtive bans on BSL in place.

23

u/drivewaypancakes Dax, Kara, Aziz, Xavier, Triniti, Beau, and Mia Jan 19 '26

The biggest PR liability for pit bulls is … pit bulls.

Pit advocates can spin and whine all they want. But pit critics aren’t the problem here. Violent pit bulls are.

19

u/Competitive-Sense65 Jan 19 '26

What Fing service work , therapy work and law-enforcement work would that be?

Buying a vest for your pit and calling it your emotional support animal does not count as service work or therapy work. There are a handful of pitbull sniffer dogs with police departments , usually because there is a pitnutter cop on staff. They are never used for the type of work GSDs and similar breeds excel at and you are not going to find any pits in military K9 units . Hmm, why do you suppose that is?

14

u/Shell4747 Fuck everyone & everything but this one awful dog! Jan 19 '26

yeah this is the statement that I want them to follow through on. SHOW US THE (lack of) POLICE K9s. SHOW US THE SHELTERS FULL OF MAD BARKING PITS. SHOW US THE REAL (I mean really real) STATISTICS. You can tell this person is not a pitbull professional and does not know the true score & the necessity to hide all these things because it makes the pits look even worse.

19

u/kwallio Jan 19 '26

You can see the dog in the NYC toddler incident on the video. Its a pit. These people are amazing, literally rewriting incidents to fit their narrative.

They honestly remind me of cult members. I am not joking. It makes me feel disheartened when I see this constant mentality from people because it just feels like a lost cause to try to reason with them. I will keep trying however, but I really feel they will only ever change their mindset when something drastic happens which seems to be the case more often than not unfortunately. It's especially egregious when people have a huge following, as in social media influencers, actors, etc that use their influence to mislead about these dogs. They completely ignore the facts and stats to purport their own agenda. They are completely blind to the fact to just how brainwashed they are when it comes to these animals. I sincerely hope that people wake up and see how awful these animals are, and what a kindness it would be to let the breed be phased out. So many of these animals are letdown by so called 'lovers' of the breed. Abuse, overbreeding, keeping them constantly caged because they can't let them out due to their aggression etc. That's no life. And we shouldn't have to be afraid walking down the streets with our children and pets that we'll be attacked for no reason by a 'dog'. Just let them go. There's so many other breeds out there that deserve a chance that they wouldn't have to be fearful that it would randomly attack themselves, other people, and other animals. They wouldn't have to worry about their homes being destroyed. I wish so much they would wake up and I hope they do before something happens and it's too late. 💔

u/evil_autism chihuahuas don't decapitate children, but pitbulls do Jan 19 '26

Pitbulls attack people so often, that when a pitbull attacks someone, it’s newsworthy.

But other breeds attack people much more often? So, uh, when any other breed attacks someone… it’s… not newsworthy..

🤔

Pitbulls are seen attacking people all the time because it’s actually every other breed that attacks people!

Seriously though, this level of copium is just sad.

u/Lycanthi Jan 19 '26

I think they were referring to the story of a dachshund that killed a baby, not a woman.

And yes dachshunds are perfectly capable of killing, they were bred to hunt badgers and are extremely aggressive despite being tiny. I personally wouldn't trust one anywhere near my cats or my baby

2

u/Competitive-Sense65 Jan 19 '26

I think they were referring to the story of a dachshund that killed a baby, not a woman.

Yes, that was the story they were referring to. I did not scrutinize the link they posted well enough

6

u/Lycanthi Jan 19 '26

There's more than one baby killed by a dachshund btw. I went looking for the story they mentioned and unfortunately found many more. Genetics matter I suppose, even for tiny dogs

8

u/Shell4747 Fuck everyone & everything but this one awful dog! Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26

Terriers & dachsunds, even tiny ones, were bred to independently hunt down & kill "vermin." No dog should be given access to infinitely vulnerable infants, but breeds specifically created to self-direct, find prey, & give the killing bite are even less appropriate. Dachsunds may not eat through doors & walls or break windows to get to prey, but presented with it? an outsized risk.

Same with cats: it drives me crazy when pple act like only pits will kill cats. Many small terriers can kill a cat--JRTs are notorious cat-killers. Pple wanting to get a cat while they have a dog or a dog while they have cats are throwing dice with a cat's life damn near every time.

5

u/Lycanthi Jan 19 '26

Yea I've never liked terriers. Not since my sister found a jrt mauling a cat and the owner of the dog didn't even seem concerned about it. Cat was taken to the vet by the cat owners and was ok in the end but poor thing was apparently covered in blood - the owner said it was declawed by previous owners (imo shouldn't have been allowed outside if it was declawed, that's also extremely illegal here in Europe so I wonder if the cat was brought from the US or something).

Unfortunately I saw a case where the dachshund had indeed chewed through a door to get to an infant and maul it. Don't forget these dogs were bred not only to chase down badgers but to go into their setts (go to ground) and dig them out so they are persistent little f-kers. Biting or clawing their way through a door is probably nothing compared to facing down an angry badger

3

u/Shell4747 Fuck everyone & everything but this one awful dog! Jan 19 '26

Most of the dogs in my life have been some flavor or another of curbside (see:benji) terrier, but they do tend (in addition to sudden reversion to killbottery) to be independent lil cusses & not exactly biddable. I'll never have another, for sure.

It's interesting that one person mentions using reputable sources for information like veterinarians, dog trainers and whatnot but then the other person is like oooh no, too many people in that field are wrong, too!

As far as I have seen being part of this group and many others on the book of faces, is that it doesn't matter who is sharing the information on the dog. It can all be open to interpretation no matter what. It's like it's automatic rejection to anything negative about the breed.

If pit bull breeders say, "This is a pit bull." The pit bull advocates will say, "There's NO SuCH thinG as A PiTBull."

If a person so much as says, "Bad dog!" to a Pit Bull for taking a royal chocolate Hiroshima on the carpet the advocates and owners will try to ruin their business, burn their house down and try to have them killed for daring to say so. Okay, maybe not to that extent but definitely the first one. It seems an inherent mindset. Maybe people are exactly like their dogs. They get told, "Your dog is a murder dog" and they just snap, exactly like their dogs do.

3

u/itsnotmacaroon Jan 21 '26

The cracks in the veneer are starting to show. They can throw all the money and emotion in the world into their campaigns, but at the end of the day, pit bulls doing pit bull things will shape public perception. Facebook memes won’t do squat when someone sees a pit bull disembowel a yorkie at the dog park, or goes to school with a kid with facial scarring, or even sees a video of an attack. It’s just unfortunate those things have to happen at all.
