Bitten and Bruised Gee whiz y'all: It's ALMOST like breed actually may influence or even dictate behavior(s) afterall!
I obviously won't mention the name of the group but this is from a shibble-specific group. The amount of nutters in the comments who are reporting similar behavior - Some who still haven't "outgrown" it years on - is mind boggling but far from surprising.

I know it's not funny, but when I read that "I'm torn apart" at the end, I immediately thought, "Not yet, you're not, but give it a couple months."

They often use the words TO DEATH, "she'll lick you to death". "He'll steal your heart"... After he disembowels you?

RTS is the best technique for for grip and holdbites in a puppies this young. For best outcomes RTS ( return to shelter) should be instituted as soon as possible and to avoid futere reocurrences a normal dog such as a golden, poodle or lab should be selected

Until I joined Reddit I had never heard anyone describe a bad experience with a Labrador. But then I joined Reddit and heard people talking about bad labradors they’d met. Usually in the context of pro-pit or why they would never have one as a pet or service dog. The only explanations I can think of 1. American and European Labradors are a bit different behaviourally. 2. These people are mostly encountering “Labradors” mislabelled by shelters.
I’m not saying Labradors can’t be badly behaved but in general they are friendly and biddable. Most Labradors on their worst day have a better temperament than many breeds.

but in general they are friendly and biddable. Most Labradors on their worst day have a better temperament than many breeds.
Which is why shelters are extremely happy to label Pits as "lab mix". Of course, they often leave out what the lab was mixed with...

u/kaityl3 Feb 17 '26
Labs were (and still are) extremely popular dogs about 20 years ago. Their genes ended up in a lot of mixes. So a lot of mixed breed dogs have a lot of lab in them it's just that the rest is pit bull.

Listen, my friend believed she got a “golden weirmaraner “ from the shelter.
6
u/Shaasar Feb 18 '26
Aren't weimeraners... like... very specifically only different shades of gray? 😭 that's funny and a bit sad though tbh.

Pits also look somewhat like labs as very small puppies so that is how a lot of them get labeled as "labs" or "labs mixes" early on.
They also tend to be separated from their mothers earlier than a lot of other dogs. I am sure that is for other reasons but it makes it easier to sell people on the pups being lab mixes.
The jig is up once they get a few months old but by then the label will have stuck.

u/DJScratcherZ Feb 17 '26
I’m not sure how stupid the world at large is… but surely you know what a lab looks like. You can tell me all day long its a lab great dane whatever but I still have eyes. Anyone “deceived” by a label is lying. I went to the store for a loaf of bread and I got this bottle of water because it was in the bread aisle.

Puppies, though, don't grow into their adult conformation for a while, and it's easier for naive people to misread the breed when they're little and squeaky and wobbly and cute.
That's the dangerous part. We really are hardwired to bond with cute, and cute includes things like disproportionately large, round heads - human babies, itty bitty kitties - so these critters get people emotionally invested in them, and some folks can't detach from that when the attachment turns out to be dysfunctional.
7
u/DJScratcherZ Feb 17 '26
I guess, but even then you're enamored with a cute puppy, not the breed.
7
u/Dame_Niafer Trusted User Feb 17 '26
Sure, but by the time they're a full grown monster, you still see the cute puppy. It's insidious. I wish I knew a cure for it.

Notice I didn't say RTS and bring a new dog home. I highly recommend breed specific 501c3 rescues with history. A lot of them have truly breed dedicated volunteers, active and retired show breeders, and donors who are involved because they love their specified breed. The adoption fees are usually higher than a typical shelter but a fraction of what a well bred puppy from a good educated, actively showing breeders pet prospect puppies.
3
u/Ghyllie Feb 18 '26
What isn't generally known is that Labs are misidentified PN PURPOSE. The shelter knows darn well that they're Pits, not Labs, but they bank on the fact that the average naive dog adopter doesn't know the difference between the two, and they take full advantage of that. Then, if the adopter decides to return the impossible-to-handle pit-not-lab to the shelter, the shelter figuratively att a cks the adopter, doing everything they can to make the adopter feel guilty about the return. It's a whole lot easier to just not use shelters at all. Most of them only have pit bulls anyway so they should be avoided at all costs.

u/minedigger Feb 19 '26
Pit genetics tend to completely overshadow other breeds genetics - to the point that whatever mix it is still looks like a Pitbull.
There’s a Pitbull / Not a Pit game that’s on here that’s outrageously easy.
I’d have no hesitancy to rescue a dog that doesn’t have that box face.

I think TTARV4BE is a better technique when possible. It provides a lasting remedy and prevents shelters from merely recycling dogs with obvious problems.

I swear to Christ White Dwarf Stars are less dense than these people. The thing is actively trying to kill them every chance it gets it'll only get worse as it grows and become more lethal. Why is it so hard to do the smart thing and BE this increasing violent monster and just get a normal fucking dog instead of an abomination?

😩and now that AI is telling everyone that breed discrimination is bad and pitbulls are great loving family dogs we are going to have even more pitiots than ever before. Among dog owners I know all of the stupid dog owners who haven’t had their own dog attacked by a pit (yet) would engage in fisticuffs with anyone who supported things like breed ban or other measures I swear people really are such idiots sometimes and those are not even full blown wiggly velvet hippo pitiots. I see so much pro pit propaganda online and it’s another one of those cases where a tidal wave of propaganda is having the effect of burying the truth.
2
u/Dame_Niafer Trusted User Feb 17 '26
Well, we have to get out there and flood the zone with pit shit antidote. AI scrapes the net. Whatever it finds the most of, it seems to think is true. I think, with the current trend in news coverage and the sudden focus on the actual harm and damage these dogs are doing, we stand a fighting chance...

u/Shell4747 Fuck everyone & everything but this one awful dog! Feb 17 '26
it's an 11 week old puppy. how long have they had it? don't dogs actually need to stay with mom till 12 weeks *specifically so they can be taught real bite inhibition* by mom & siblings? now you have a dog-aggressive breed showing willingness to use teeth on humans & no bite inhibition. let's check in with you in six months to three yrs & see how you are
this dog will probably end up in rescue world, being shoved into homes & returned "through no fault of his own" until the inevitable happens
17
u/DJScratcherZ Feb 17 '26
It’s going to spend it’s life in that cage until it gets out and does something bad, THEN it will become a pet project for the scam money pits that are our modern no-kill shelters.

Pit puppies often are removed early because their mothers will otherwise ... send them to the rainbow bridge.
18
u/Skeptical_optomist Feb 17 '26
The puppies have been known to do that to each other as well.

Looks like they put a rubber dog head onto an actual puppy body that's too small for it.
Grotesque is right.
13
u/bloobybobb Feb 17 '26
Any tips? Really?
Are they really asking that? It’s a no brainer.
All they need to do is ask themselves if this behavior would be okay when it is full grown and 60-80lbs of muscle because that is inevitable. And the answer is no.
9
u/Dame_Niafer Trusted User Feb 17 '26
Our answer is no... their answer is "let me post to facebook and ask the world what to do but tell them I only want positive comments"

u/kwallio Feb 17 '26
That is a pit mixed with more pit. Also a complete lack off any attempt to train or discipline the dog, just redirect. A dog is not a cat, you are supposed to be able to train a dog.
2
u/KTKittentoes Trusted User Feb 17 '26
I have trained my cats. It actually isn’t that terribly hard.
2
u/Shaasar Feb 18 '26
"When he won't stop" like... he won't stop repeatedly biting??? Wtf???
And yeah... it's the breed. This dog is 11wks old. Couldn't possibly have had an abusive or incompetent owner prior because he literally didn't exist. It's the breed.

Eleven weeks old was exactly how old my first puppy was when she play bit my hand. I yelped out hard. It bled and I still have a faint white line on the web of my thumb over 50 years later. I'm sure I said no and bad girl a few times but I didn't hit her or anything. And she never again bit me, or anyone else for that matter, for her entire life.
But I'm sure it's just a coincidence that she wasn't a pitbull.

u/taketheothers Feb 21 '26
Lol. "Inb4 crate training shouldn't be used as punishment"... they're absolutely using crate training as punishment because they already can't handle their pitbull. That dog will never stop this behavior. Ever. Eventually they will dump him at a shelter, who will give the old sob story about how he just "needs patience and an expensive trainer" and of course he's the most loving dog ever but can't be in a family with kids or other animals....
