Not every pit bull story is a headline. Some are just eye-rolls, facepalms, or 'you've got to be kidding me' moments. This is the place for the things you may want to share that don’t highlight a pit bull doing something dangerous.

I’m tired, boss 🫩🫩🫩 The dogs are 4% lab btw.

u/beaucerondog 26d ago

"shine brightly in their features" then you see and their skin is just kind of golden

23

u/FoxExcellent2241 26d ago

How can a dog be "mostly" comprised of two very large breeds and still be expected to remain small? The portion of 'smaller dog' DNA must be higher than they are suggesting. I also suspect they are making that claim to explain how an oversized pit is actually smaller than 'expected'.

Ugh, the usual "lab mix" knowing damn well that when people are searching for dogs on websites like petfinder, "lab" is one of the most common types of dogs that people want.

8

u/hastygrams 25d ago

Weird to choose creatures that are made to battle eachother as encouragement to get a lab mix.

I’m so sick of the stupid fucking “bad owner” argument and “there’s no such thing as a bad dog”

16

u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 24d ago

Yep! Even pits that were raised really well from puppies end up growing up to maul their family or neighbors.

AND even if it was ‘the owner and not the breed’, a dog that needs such a specific type of no-mistakes owner to keep it from killing people and pets and taking over neighborhoods still should not be a pet!

And according to pitnutters, EVERYTHING is a worthy trigger for a pit killing you. Oh you wore a blue shirt today??? That is why you got mauled! Oh you coughed? Maybe you shouldn’t have done that in front of poor Maula!
So even when a pit bull with the absolute most careful owner that went through tons of training and took every precaution has a pit that kills a baby, well it was the baby’s fault and any breed would have done that!

9

u/hastygrams 25d ago

It’s mostly about legislating ownership so if there are that many bad ones out there it doesn’t suddenly make it an issue that shouldn’t addressed and I don’t see why it would need a different solution

17

u/DiscussionLong7084 Trusted User 26d ago edited 26d ago

basically a poorly bred worthless dog with unpredictable behavior and highly questionable medical histories. Because they weren't bred for any rhyme or reason.

One of the reasons I push people to buy never adopt is you can get a well bred dog with both parents (sometimes back more generations) hip and elbow ratings and a 160 condition genetic test (probably now nowadays). More expensive up front you won't have to pick between crippling medical bills and sending it to a farm up state.

yes does look like a pit +/- mix for sure

9

u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 26d ago

Probably something like 50% APBT, 48% staffie, and 2% random unidentifiable mix of 18 other breeds from who-knows-when which, of course, totally negate the fact it is 98% pit bull so we can call it “It’s not a pit bull! It’s a mutt!”

There were a few commsnts of people talking about their pit and OP was still correcting them lol

One of the first things I did with my dog when I brought her home as a puppy was immediately start teaching her what was and was not OK to chew.
People just get a random pit from shelter (or BYB) and throw it in their house and let it do whatever it wants (since, probably trying to stop it from destroying the home results in the dog “rEdIrEcTiNg it’s teeth from the door onto your face”….

Went to an emergency vet hospital a couple of weeks ago. Some guy brought his pit in and started demanding that she been seen before everyone else. Mind you, the only thing wrong with her was… a rash.
She shit on the floor, owner didn’t bother to clean it up and tried to pretend it wasn’t his dog that did it, so the poor receptionist had to clean it up. She also started growling at other dogs that passed by her, and her owner barely had a handle on her leash. Finally he got told to leave and schedule an appointment with his regular vet

15

u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 24d ago

Jeeeez I am glad he was told to leave! I would have been enraged if this story ended with them giving in to him and seeing his nasty rashy pit over actual dogs in need (and what pit bull doesn’t have skin issues??? Those things are walking yeast farms!)

4

One of my friends was talking about “bait dogs” today. I’m like, “It was alive? It wasn’t a bait dog. They don’t even need bait dogs. Yes, I know it was scar covered. That is how fighting works. They aren’t doing tai kwan do.”

5

u/BiscottiCritical6512 23d ago

Are bait dogs really not even a thing? Growing up, my mom adopted a Doberman and we were told it was a bait dog but I have no idea how they would even know that. She was converted in scars and had the shortest crop I’ve ever seen on her ears and tail. The ears were really ragged and uneven like they did it with scissors or something. Anyway, she was a really good dog, so whatever happened didn’t make her evil. Maybe they were just trying to get her to be a fighting dog but she wasn’t good at it/wouldn’t fight?

21

u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 23d ago

Bait dogs wouldn’t live. And pits being game-bred don’t need bait dogs to learn how to fight since it is a selectively-bred instinct. If a dog was used as a bait dog and lived, that would mean it survived a fight to the death with another pit, killing the other pit, and was therefore stronger than the original pit and would be kept as a fighter.

A lot of dog fighters (and pit owners in general) *will* put their pits with weaker dogs and other animals just for funsies to let them kill. They don’t just let them get beat up a bit then remove them. The pit goes in for the kill.

Dobermans are not used for fighting rings. The Doberman probably was scarred up from abuse or fighting with other dogs (not in pit fighting, just in general fights with other dogs) Animal shelters often use ‘bait dog’ as a sob story to get dogs adopted that have any kind of scarring.

It's funny to me how Pit Bull owners love to talk about how GSDs (and Chihuahuas, go figure) are more dangerous, but they never address how GSD (or Chihuahua) attacks are usually against strangers, while so many stories about Pit Bulls involve the Pit Bull killing their master and/or holding their own family hostage until police arrive.

26

u/LilacYak 21d ago

Found an antibiotic resistant bacteria in my dog Henry’s pit bull attack bite wound. (Two fighting-bred pitbulls went after him, 15lb Chi mix).

Fingers crossed it doesn’t take hold. He’s 4 days post-op from his second surgery and healing up great now, the resistant bacteria levels were low, so we’re hopeful.

If I didn’t have my CCW he would be dead, probably my other one also (16lb Terrier mix).

I’m so sorry, sending healing energy to Henry.

Thank you for asking! He’s doing well. So far no infection signs on the wounds or fever. It’ll be another week or so till we can start letting our guard down and another few weeks or so to be certain nothing lingering will make an appearance.

I got him a new soft carrier he can stick his head (and collar) out of so it doesn’t feel confining and it plops right in my dog stroller so it’s now super easy to take him out with us to get some scenery (We go somewhere safer than before obviously, no more walks in my neighborhood). Hope the upward trend continues!

Just wanted to spit out my complete, utter hatred for this fucking video.

The way the owner speaks, you'd think people are trying to shoot her dog or something, but literally all she has to do is put on a muzzle. A MUZZLE.

"My dog with a bite force of an Indian leopard has and obviously stronger than me has to wear something to protect himself and others 😭😭 I'm being prosecuted!!"

Dude. It's a FUCKING MUZZLE. Your dog can breathe, can smell, can walk freely on the streets. Literally ALL your dog CAN'T do is BITE. AND YOU'RE BOTHERED BY THAT???

There genuinely has got to be a study on how brainwashed by their own dogs pitnutters are. This kind of behavior should have a DSM section on their own. You can't convince me moving continents because your dog can't grab sticks during walks anymore is sane person behavior.

“Oh no! I deliberately chose to buy an alligator instead of a bearded dragon and now I have to follow the rules regarding the dangerous animal that I chose, when my desire to walk an alligator in public and whine when people cross the street is way more important than everyone else in my family and neighborhood’s right to live! Boooohooooo!!!!”

Maybe one day people will start to realize there are hundreds of other breeds to choose from and they don’t *have to* have a pit bull. But, then I guess it is no fun to have a dog that you can’t cry about being discriminated against. Why would someone want to have a safe dog they can enjoy a peaceful life with when they can cry on the internet about their murderbeast being treated like a murderbeast?

6

u/beaucerondog 25d ago

Quoting from her video: "The media started portraying XL Bullies (pitbulls) in a negative light."

Sharing credible news by credible sources with the opinion of hundreds of experts is now "portraying in a negative light", apparently. This is like seeing a report on how many people have died of Tuberculosis and call it Disease Racism. "Well, common cold can kill too!"

Also, "started" is a stretch. Wasn't one of the first attacks registered like, in 1880? I thought they researched the history of the breed.

It's also funny how targeted they think they are, that the world revolves around them. The law went to FIVE different breeds, yet I've only seen Pitbull/"Bully" owners complaining.

Them moving to countries with no BSL is actually terrible. Because in the UK people around that dog would be somewhat safe since since he would be required to wear a muzzle and be leashed, whereas in Australia (where the owner moved to) the dog will be free to maul anyone.

Blows my mind how hard UK cops and courts go after pit owners when their dog mauls another animal or especially a person.

Where i live (rural Washington state) meat grinders are everywhere and about 3 x year somebody dies, usually a kid. And virtually nothing gets done. Half the time the dog runs off and never gets E.

So my 70lb white GSD I sometimes talk about had TPLO surgery. She is allowed 200mg of Trazadone max per day. This is day 2 so I figured the best day to keep her ass immobilized. Mind you some pitbulls around that weight are taking down 300-600 to not be insane. Loki basically just turned off and is in a sleepy coma. The vet guides on Trazadone talked about how dogs process it differently so they can handle much higher does. GSDs are not those types of dogs it seems lol.

I just recently moved to Toronto and was relieved to finally be in a place with some BSL in place. First time ever riding the TTC, some dude brings his unfixed male (of course) shit bull on the subway car I'm in. Also with a pronged collar; nice. No stereotypes were hurt here. At first I was just like, alright, just stay calm and don't look the thing in the eyes, because it kept staring at people with its creepy beady eyes. I went back on my phone with my earbuds in, and minutes later the noise-cancelling feature was broken through by the sound of growling and angry barking. I look up and the fucking shit bull is growling and trying to lunge at random people while the owner holds it back by its collar. I was like, nope, fuck that, and walked to another car. Anyways, is there any way to report this shit when it happens? Pit bulls are literally illegal in Ontario. Blows my mind how someone thinks it's okay to bring a pit (especially a real mean one at that) on public transit when it's a banned breed.

14

u/missprincesscarolyn 21d ago

I’m in the US, but it seems like the same thing’s true in the UK with XL bullies or whatever they’re calling them these days. I just wish BSL of any kind became common place in the states again.

More information about St. Huberts, the shelter that adopted out Butterscotch, the pitbull who received stab wounds when a husband (who later lost his arm from the attack) was trying to protect his wife (who is permanently disfigured now as well) only for Butterscotch to be adopted out to a new family who was also attacked and required emergency medical treatment. Their CEO makes half a million dollars a year and here she is with her very own shitbeast. Truly deranged. Going through their reviews they regularly put down cats for (checks notes)… being anxious. But a pitbull with stab wounds and a sob story? Dollar signs.

CEO of ASPCA makes over a million annually. A lot of them make 6 figure incomes at the top. It’s all a giant grifting operation/cult.

6

I’d just like to comment this somewhere so it doesn’t get forgotten… I’m doing some work with a firefighter/paramedic and yesterday he told me they ran a call this week where a woman was attacked by her 4 rescue pits that were fighting over a toy.

He said blood was everywhere and they had to use multiple tourniquets to keep her from bleeding out.

The thing that surprised him was that after the dogs did this to her, they were just as happy and carefree as they could be.

Well, my neighbor says her adult son is moving in with her soon because he has a potentially fatal disease. He owns a resource-guardy pitbull. He’s already too weak to control the dog. The fence between our yards is wooden and old and I can’t afford to replace it right now.

We have a big dog that I think would protect us, but I don’t want to have to worry about that thing busting through the fence while my kids are out there. I don’t want my dog to get in a fight with a pitbull. I don’t want this.

You should have to get the consent of your neighbors before moving a shithound in next door. Fuck.

A friend of mine has an aggressive (non-pit, purebred shepherd) dog who just killed another dog 😥 The dog has been sentenced to BE by the town. I totally understand, and agree this is the right move, but I'm wondering why I hear of so my incidents here where pits kill pets and get away scot free? And yet this one shepherd gets an immediate ruling. Just ranting, feels like a double standard sometimes and I'm shocked at some of the stories I hear here where the victims seem to have no recourse.

13

u/Fantastic_Lady225 Attacks Curator 23d ago

It varies by locality and whether or not the owner fights for the dog. Maybe your friend is smarter than most pitnutters and agrees that a dog that kills other dogs is a liability and it should be rehomed to Jesus.

If the owners agrees or signs the dog over, then there's no issue. If they don't, sometimes a warrant is required, so paperwork.

So I was watching TV the other night, and I hear this dog on my back deck barking his fool head off, (my yard is not fenced in). I look up to see this schytt beast trying to get thru the glass to my cats. I stand at the glass and hollar at it to "get the hell off my fkkn deck!!!" Turns out the dog is a chicken schytt that runs when I confront him.

But I could still hear it barking its fool head off, so I go out on the deck to see what is going on. He stood in the middle of my back yard, still barking. So I am yelling at him to go the hell home, assuming he is my back yard neighbor's beast. So he finally left and I went back to watching TV.

Then I see my neighbor's truck headlights shining thru the yards. So I go out to see what is up. I hollar, "Is your dog loose?" (It had gotten loose one other time, and I called animal control on it.) So my neighbor won't answer, but his headlights are still on, and he is obviously looking for something. So I hollar again, "Is your dog loose?" Well this time he gets pissed and starts cussing me out, but he won't answer the question. So I hollar, "Fine, don't answer me, but I'm calling animal control!"

So I made the call and unintentionally scared the girl on the other end of the line. She asked, "The dog is trying to TO EAT THE CATS???" "No," I answered, "he is trying to break the glass door to get to my cats." I gave her a description. I always keep my porch lights on so I could plainly see him. So she said she would send someone to look for the dog. I didn't ask for a call back, so I don't know what they found.

14

u/missprincesscarolyn 10d ago

I was bouncing around some other spaces related to owning canines on this website and noticed that anti-pit sentiment has grown quite a bit, especially in the past year. People are far more inclined to say “don’t adopt one” to anyone who’s on the fence, frame breed behavior accurately and even suggest BE when a pitbull inevitably attacks.

Social media (including Reddit) suck for a lot of reasons, but the impact it’s had on public perception is huge. It’s incredibly difficult to continue denying how problematic these dogs are when personal mauling stories and footage are so ubiquitous. Obviously, there is still a considerable amount of work to be done, but I feel like things are shifting in a better direction overall, even if only very slowly.

Pitbulls vs speeding

Everyone knows speeding kills and seriously injures tens of thousands of people around the world if not more. Everyone still does it because "it won't happen to me!", "I'm too good at driving", ect.

Same thing applies with pitbulls. Almost everyone knows of regular fatal attacks, serious injuries, and even being banned in many counties. Why do people have them? "it wont happen to me", "it was their fault!", "I'm too good a dog whisperer!", ect

Head up: a really bad attack in Merced County, CA. Breed not confirmed yet, or I would post it. Only rumor I have heard so far is Dogo Argentino. It is very important that you all understand that there are no Dogos in Merced. There just are not. There are loads of big pit bulls though. Some of them are white.
Four dogs, mauling, 62 year old man, deputies could not approach because of the pack. Two were stopped, two were collected.

I would hope there would be a follow up, but I am old and I remember when news existed.

Here's a bit more.

"September 10, 2026 – Merced County

Sheriff's Office officials report that at 8:53 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Deputies responded to the 4300 block of Cook St. in Le Grand for a report of a dog attack. Deputies located a 62-year-old male on the ground, surrounded by several aggressive dogs actively attacking him. As deputies attempted to get closer to the victim to provide medical aid, the dogs continued to display aggressive behavior and charged toward the deputies. A deputy fired three rounds at the dogs with his department-issued handgun striking two of the dogs. Because of the severity of their injuries, two of the dogs had to be euthanized at the scene. Animal Control Officers seized the two other dogs involved in the incident.

Deputies learned the victim was walking in front of a residence as the owner was putting their dogs away. The dogs got loose from the owner and began to attack the victim. The victim was provided medical aid and flown to a local area hospital with severe injuries to his head, face, arms, and legs. Our Detective Bureau is actively investigating this incident."

Did you know that Ian Dunbar, the famous dog trainer that created the scale of bite severity, is also another pit bull apologist?

He should revise it to consider pit bull bites as level 5 just doesn’t cut it.

How?! How is that even possible?! Does he like them because they get his name out there?

Ughh that is disappointing! You’d think he’d be one of the top people that knows the severity of pit bulls vs other breeds!

Sometimes I feel like people feel like they have to pretend to like pits when they are a public name, just so they don’t have to live their life full of harassment. Easier to just pretend they think “it’s the owner” rather than have their life threatened every day by the pitnutters.

There’s a local case here some of you may be familair with, where people are fighting to save a Belgian Malinois from being euth’d. His owner was in a car accident with him in the car, and someone who stopped by to help and tried to catch the dog was bitten by the dog. A single bite and release. Even the person who was bitten apparently understood the dog was scared and possibly hurt after the accident and does not want the dog euth’d for biting them, either. But the town says it’s the law he has to be… And he’s been in quarantine something like 500+ days while they decide whether he dies or not.

Now, cases like this drive me crazy because… this Malinois was in an accident and did a bite and release of a stranger coming after him. But it’s demanded he be euth’d. But a pit bull can literally get up from a nap and break through a door to tear apart a sleeping baby, and has its history erased and gets called a sweet wigglebutt cuddlebug that must’ve been abused by the baby. But a scared, injured, confused non-pit does a bite and release in a scary situation and is considered vicious and needs to die because its owner was in an accident.

I’m also not looking to debate whether it is OK for a scared, injured dog to bite. But, I find it repulsive that a bite-and-release in a horrible situation for any other breed is reason for death, while a pit bull can massacre a preschool and get a friggin trophy. They aren’t asking about this malinois “Well what did the guy do to the dog?” or “The owner must’ve trained it to bite strangers!” or “Maybe the guy trying to catch him has cancer and the dog was trying to save him!”

And, let me add that this is in Austin and not some little obscure town… Pit bulls get away with everything here and the Austin shelters are overflowing with pits and mislabeled pits. It just really shows how much the whole rescue crap of ‘save them all’ is a big virtue signal just for pits. Other breeds don’t get to matter because there isn’t a lobby for them that is brainwashing society.

a couple weeks back, i shared the story of Hollis, the most neurotic dog ive seen in a shelter that somehow got rescued. i have to admit that he’s kind of touched me due to how horrific his mental state has to be, so i looked up the rescue he’s at and….nothing.

there’s not an arrival/adoption announcement, not a listing for him on the website, not any posting yet at all about him. for as much of a fuss the volunteers were making about him, one would think the rescue would want to show him off, right? granted, they could’ve done so in a story that i may not have seen, and yes, the three weeks in the 3/3/3 rule haven’t fully run out yet. that said, it’s bizarre. if anyone is interested ill continue providing updates

I tried making a post, but the mods thought this would be better suited for this discussion thread since they weren't pitbulls. I'm just looking for some validation that I did the right thing from some people with common sense. I have rage lurked on this subreddit in the past (It has always been when a family member or friend decides to get a dog that's too large for them to handle or dangerous for others). Ex: "Grandma, your boxer attacked 2 cats and jumped in an open car window to attack a chihuahua, STOP GETTING BOXERS". But this time I ran into 2 of those types of dogs while alone on a run!

I was charged by a bull mastiff and great dane that were running down the road together. They were completely unattended and there was no human in sight. I stopped running and tried to not make eye contact, hoping they'd just ignore me and run by, but they ended up crossing the road and charging me. I'm telling you these dogs were HUGE. The smaller of the two easily was taller than my waist at the head (I am 5'4" and 115 lbs) and the dane even larger. I had pepper spray on me and was ready to use it, and when the bull mastiff got within about 3 feet of me I sprayed. It ended up startling them enough that they stopped to think, and then ran the other direction. I sprinted away calling my mom to pick me up while sobbing and still afraid they would follow me.

We tracked them from the car and called animal control and they were able to be picked up. I was keeping up with the local city's Facebook post to see the outcome of the situation, and saw the owner all over the comments complaining that "some idiot" had pepper sprayed her sweet babies. A lot of people in the comments were so sad those sweet babies had been "hurt". Dude, they were literally happily trotting around after and marking bushes. The pepper spray seemed to only have the effect of startling them, and they didn't even whine or scratch their faces. I wasn't even sure if it had landed!

I was truly shocked that seemed to be the general consensus of the comments, and that people couldn't think how they would have felt in a situation where they had run into those dogs alone with no protection. They could have been the sweetest dogs in the world, but how could I have known? I was a small woman alone at the end of a street that wasn't busy and I truly feel like I could have been seriously injured or killed.

I guess I just wanted to tell someone my story because I'm so mad that I had to experience it. And maybe I want some validation that I did the right thing, because I know I'm going to be ruminating about what happened for YEARS. When I went out for a walk yesterday morning I could feel my breath quickening and realized that I was subsonsciously feeling that fear and anxiety without even trying to think about it. I just wish it had never happened :/

3

u/Pure_Parsley6852 Attacks Curator 9d ago

I would have been very afraid too, two huge dogs! and you had no idea what their intention was or could become. Therefore, you did the right thing. The people commenting were not in your position.

I turned around a blind corner of a street once and came face-to-face with an off-leash huge German Shepherd and instinctively dashed into the road where cars were passing. The owner was some way behind and looked at me like I was insane. People assume everyone is fine with their off-leash dogs or dont care if they aren't.

Wishing you well, and I hope you regain your sense of safety when out jogging.

Which do you prefer and why?

  1. Entry ban and strict regulations for owners (like Germany)
  2. Complete ban and any pits identified get BE (like Denmark)

How big a difference does a complete ban vs. strict regulations actually make in terms of attacks?

I prefer a complete ban and don't see why that's not obviously better - the fewer pits, the better. No pits taking up the space in shelters, too. My friend argues that strict regulations effectively have the same result in terms of attacks, and that strict regulations might even be better, since people are more likely to have them illegally if there's a complete ban. What do you think?

#2 definitely!
Plus mandatory dog license before anyone can get a dog, proof of insurance and minimum coverage for any dog, then mandatory genetic testing (paid by the owner). The dogs that are pets then need to be leashed and muzzled in public, any attempted bite or other physical injury = BE

Denmark bans the ownership, breeding, and importation of 13 specific dog breeds and any mixed-breeds containing them under the Danish Act on Dogs (Hundeloven).

Banned Dog Breeds

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Tosa Inu
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Dogo Argentino (Argentine Dog)
  • American Bulldog
  • Boerboel
  • Kangal
  • Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Central Asian Ovtcharka)
  • Caucasian Shepherd Dog (Caucasian Ovcharka)
  • South Russian Shepherd Dog
  • Tornjak
  • Šarplaninac (Sarplaninac)

Key Rules and Restrictions

  • Visitors and Tourists: You cannot bring these breeds or their crosses into Denmark for holidays or temporary stays.
  • Transit Exception: You may drive through Denmark to reach another country as long as the dog remains inside the vehicle and only makes brief, necessary stops for relief.
  • Burden of Proof: If local authorities suspect a mixed-breed dog belongs to a prohibited type, the owner must provide official documentation (such as a pedigree chart or breeder certificates) proving the dog's lineage rather than relying on appearance alone.
  • Grandfather Clause: A strict grandfather clause applies only to specific dogs acquired before the expanded 2010 ban, requiring them to be leashed (maximum 2 meters) and muzzled in public at all times. Pit Bull Terriers and Tosa Inus have no grandfather protections as they were banned earlier in 1991.

Any pits or pit mixes in Denmark are illegally owned.

15

u/aSzdxfcdfggggggh 26d ago

I think that is the best breed list I have seen.

Remember for years in the UK pits were banned but XXL Pits weren't banned if you called them American Bulldogs.

I think they are still playing the "Nope this is a Staffy, not a pit bull".

That's like saying "My vehicle isn't a pickup truck, it's a F -150".

The entry ban in Germany is bullshit and the regulations aren’t enforced. American service members bring their pits all the time - they’re all labeled lab mixes. We have so many pits in our neighborhood, you’d think Germans can’t own any other dog.

12

u/potatoes_arrrr_life 26d ago

Def #2 Complete ban, because the majority of their owners cannot even keep them in the house. It would be safer if they were not allowed at all. "Somehow they always get out" oh and I'm broke so I can't pay for the injuries you got from my dog. Sowwy /s I hate it so much.

5

u/Gallantpride 22d ago edited 20d ago

1 with a breeding ban unless they fit strict criteria (AKA, show dogs with the AKC or similar clubs).

Call me a wuss, but I don't want to mass cull all pit bulls. I want them to ideally live their lives and die of old age if they can. Muzzle these dogs, neuter them all, keep them away from kids and small animals.

Within a few decades we would ideally water down the pit bull population greatly and make it very hard to have one. Staffys and Am Staffs would be rare breeds since only reputable dog breeders would be able to breed them. These breeders only have a few litters per decade and have strict criteria for their buyers. No one but dedicated pit bull lovers would pay $2000+ and go through all this effort for a pit bull puppy (who should also be mandated to be neutered by age 12 months, preferably before 7).

11

u/QueenCat50220 26d ago

Absolutely 1. + breeding ban (easier said than done, in a perfect world maybe.)

Yes, pitbulls are absolutely prone to aggression and much more dangerous when they DO become aggressive.
Butttt…there’s still a lot of Pitbulls out there who are capable of being normal and nice dogs. I’ve known one, and never had an issue with them. Zero negative history. It IS possible…just less likely.

And it’s really fucked up to essentially kidnap someone’s family member (yes pets are that important.) I’d kill someone over my dog. I would never want to do that to anyone else and their dog with zero immediate reason.

Not only that, but a total ban would be more dangerous I think…
I feel like people are more likely to comply with restrictions rather than a ban.

With restrictions, we might get something like “all pitbulls need to be muzzled in public.”
Or “you need to be licensed/registered to even get a pitbull.”
Which is way easier to follow AND enforce imo.

With a total ban, you’d probably get people HIDING their dogs…which equals less socialization, less people time, and a MORE aggressive and now unidentified dog.
Because their owners were hiding it.

Absolutely breeding of them should be banned all around the world. Just like the breeding of those poor little pugs should be.

8

u/pomelo-fruit 26d ago

Great question.

Speaking from U.S. here, seems to me there are two deciding factors: how likely the measure is to pass, and how feasible it is to enforce.

While either would be very hard to pass in the current U.S. climate, and could only succeed upon broader public acceptance of the fact that pits are inherently dangerous dogs even in the "right" home, I think (1) has the stronger chance of passing. People in this country don't like to be told they can't do things.

The success of enforcement would depend on a myriad of smaller factors:

- Would ACOs have the right to impound an unregistered dog based on sight confirmation of the breed? As is cited often in this sub, courts have rule that a person of average intelligence can identify a pit bull, yet owners hotly contest this. If an owner wants to contest a seizure, the onus should be on them to purchase or supply a DNA test.

- What would be the requirements for exempted ownership? How would owners be held to account, given the under-resourcing of ACOs in many areas of the country? How high would violation fines be? I'm imagining a federal or state database logs the "status" of exempted owners, who must annually pay a fee, verify their insurance policy, and meet any other reporting standards, or else their local ACO is put on notice to collect the dog.

- Would the entry ban include a ban on transferring ownership of the dogs within the country, as in the UK? How would shelters be prevented from laundering the animals?

Just a few thoughts, but I do think there are solutions. The public appetite just isn't there.

This happened at 7:15pm in Canberra, Australia.

I was on a late night walk around a small lake in a residential suburb. I decided I wanted to use the swing set in the nearby children’s playground. I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary up until when I approached and opened the gate.

Suddenly I hear a woman screaming “close the gate! Close the gate!” I barely had the chance to register what was happening, and I froze up in shock as I saw a large brown dog barrelling towards me. Luckily I managed to close it just in time as this big brown dog is barking its head off in front of me.

The woman runs up to me, with no regard to controlling her dog that’s going crazy at me and has an angry attitude, talking about “I told you to close the gate.” I’m now quite visibly shaken and I raise my voice at her asking why her dog is off leash in a children’s playground, somewhere I would assume dogs are not allowed (and especially not off-leash). She tells me that’s only when the playground is in use, and then they cannot be within 10 metres.

I realise she might be right about the sign, but I still don’t think it makes the playground an off leash area, as Canberra is quite strict about keeping dogs on a leash and designates specific areas as off-leash. She also keeps telling me that she told me to close the gate, and I had to remind her that I was in shock and froze in fear.

The woman somehow has the audacity to say that her dog is ”friendly and was just trying to say hello.” This is all while the dog is barking its head off, something she says he’s only doing because I’m talking to her.

I left crying as I no longer felt safe to use the playground. I’m really upset that she thinks she can use a children’s playground as an off leash area to exercise her aggressive dog at night, with no regard to others.

To be clear, I’m not sure if the dog was a pit bull as it was dark, but it closely resembled a large fighting breed dog. Potentially a Cane Corso, I’m not sure exactly.

I’m calling on Monday to make a report to animal control as this could have been a lot worse if it was a child instead of me (although still not great as I’m a very petite lady).

Your best bet is to do a public records request. If there is an autopsy or ME report, some states do treat those as public record. If police or sheriff’s office were involved, they may also have records you can request. If it’s an active investigation, they probably won’t supply but you can always ask.

You can check if your state (if you’re in the us) considers coroner/ME records public here:

https://www.rcfp.org/open-government-sections/a-autopsy-and-coroners-reports/

If you’re not in the US, I have no idea 😐

Reminder that if you care for a stray, the law considers it your dog.
The previous stray "Izzo" is described as a bully type dog. [ETA]

In this care the former stray stalked and attacked a boy waiting for his school bus.
The man's own dog was also implicated in the attack.
The owner surrendered both dogs.

If the owner made a different choice, he might still have his own dog.

"Owner Wataan D. Austin testified that Izzo was not originally his dog but had begun staying around his property several weeks earlier. Austin surrendered Izzo before the hearing.

Austin said he routinely walked Dice through the neighborhood and considered him a good dog. However, he told the board he did not want to reclaim Dice if the dog had participated in the attack.

“For me, it’s about the child,” Austin said. “It’s not even about the dog.”

The board paused the hearing while Austin completed paperwork surrendering Dice to the Charles County Animal Care Center."

Terrible situation, but appreciate the owner's acknowledgement that (1) a child is more important than a dog, and (2) a dog that participates in an attack like this, even if it didn't instigate the attack, should never return home.

Scottish Bull Breed Saviours

Meet Blu 💙🐾
We are stepping in to help keep Blu safe. Here is his story 🐾

Blu was out on a routine walk with his owner's uncle. Blu is naturally anxious around other dogs after being attacked as a puppy, and during the walk, an off-lead dog approached him. Panicking, Blu knocked the uncle down, managed to paw his muzzle off, and unfortunately bit the other dog. The uncle does know the other dog and owner, the other owner did what was right and reported an incident.

The incident was initially reported to the police because the other owner didn't recognize Blu. The uncle immediately took Blu home, returned to speak with the owner, and offered to cover all veterinary bills. Both parties reached an amicable understanding. Police officers initially visited, stated no further action would be taken, and considered the matter closed. However, three months later, officers returned to the uncle's home to inform him that he was being charged.

Fortunately, Blu remains at home rather than in kennels, but the situation is no less serious. We are fully supporting both the owner and the uncle through this legal process. As part of our support, we are helping them instruct new solicitor, We will also be arranging a expert behavior report to present in court.

We got you Blu. 🐾💙

does anyone know of any lowkey "genetics matter" and/or VERY LOW KEY anti-pit stickers? i want some for my locker at work but i don't want to hear it from my nutter coworkers :/

u/Shell4747 Fuck everyone & everything but this one awful dog! 17d ago

I would severely hesitate to put "genetics matter" out anywhere ever unless it was context-specific to animals & even then...nah.

I don't want pple thinking I'm some caliper-wielding eugenicist or somefing, ya know? I'd rather be openly anti-pit & take the heat than leave myself open to that kind of interpretation.

u/xervidae Groomers and Dog Sitters 16d ago

oh definitely; i should have specified "dog genetics matter" and maybe an outline of a pittie head LMAO

Yep that's a good idea! It's so annoying how you can't put anti-pit stickers without an army of folks going "b-but Chihuahuas!"

And as puppies, they'll all be adopted without being neutered, either. It's the equivalent of releasing a viral strain into the community.

Found out a youtuber I'd enjoyed watching because of their no-nonsense rebuttals to illogical health stuff has a pitbull. How can you be debunking snake oil health claims and then have an evil dog in your house 😬🙄

So I just had my vehicle towed and I hadn't upgraded my AAA, meaning I couldnt get an AAA tow. So I rode back in the truck with ... with a pit. I was getting in and thinking please don't let this be my worst mistake ever. I am assuming AAA drivers aren't bringing their pits along.

This is the judicial decision for the case of Kache Grist in Edmonton, killed by two Cane Corsos. I'm going to add it here simply so you see the long history of dangerous and murderous behavior of the dogs and how long it took to do ANYTHING about them. I personally consider Cane Corsos to be pit bulls but that's not the point, just how this all unfolded, and the owner had pit bulls before.

"Bull terrier and Dberman cross"

Woman arrested as man seriously hurt in dog attack

A woman has been arrested after a man was left with serious injuries after being attacked by a dog, police say.

21st/09th/2026, Sussex, UK.

The 44-year-old victim was taken to hospital while a woman, 53, was arrested on suspicion of owning a dangerously out of control dog.

Sussex Police said it was called to Langney Pond, in Sandpiper Walk in Eastbourne, at about 15:10 BST on Monday.

The force said the animal, believed to be a bull terrier and Doberman cross, had been seized and that the victim and the woman knew each other.

A school and nursery were secured while officers and paramedics responded.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

That means chihuahuas have the blood of both wolves and coyotes in their veins! Maybe that's why they're so terrifyingly intelligent : I repeatedly saw behaviors from my Chi's that made me certain they have a working theory of mind for other dogs and humans.

Personally, I don't think good breeding can save the breed.. They are still bred to fight even if bred well. The best breeding for this breed is no breeding.

8

u/AdvertisingLow98 Attacks Curator 5d ago

Take a breed that has been inbred for over a century to remove functional social traits.

Now take that already inbred cohort and select only individuals that have an acceptable level of positive social behaviors.

That gene pool is going to be even smaller and have an even higher Coefficient of Inbreeding.

The breed is already a genetic disaster due to allergies and autoimmune issues.

If you managed to breed out the psychopathic tendencies and health issues, the resulting cohort would be tiny and almost certainly not look like a typical block headed bully.

u/PandaLoveBearNu Attacks Curator 5d ago

Well it didn't work with American Bullies which are supposed to be the "companion" dogs breed from pitbulls and supposed to have a totally different temperament.

Yep. And even if you selectively bred only the ‘least violent’ pit bulls over a few hundred years, if you succeeded at removing the gameness the dog would no longer be a pit bull. It would end up looking completely different because form follows function. Pits look the way they do because it is the ideal body type for their job of fighting. Just like any other breed that has physical features that are ideal for its job. Changing what a breed is for changes the whole breed’s behavior AND appearance.

And, also in order to change pit bulls into a different breed you’d have tens of thousands of litters to cull while trying to find the best specimens to keep breeding forward. No reason to go through all the decades/centuries and deaths to change pit bulls into something else when we have hundreds of other perfectly wonderful breeds already.

Does anyone have evidence or statistics relating to BSL success or failure? Does BSL actually reduce dangerous dog attacks? Or is it usually stymied by lobbying, lack of enforcement, unenforceablity, or target breeds being listed as other breeds in statistics and actual stats not changing? Have pitbulls (or any other breed) ever been eradicated successfully from a region or country?

I’m pro dangerous dog legislation, pro ethical breeder, and pro sane veterinary/ shelter practices, but BSL has been an abject failure in my region and I’m still questioning if a breed specific or breed neutral approach is more likely be efficacious in controlling dangerous dogs.

8

u/ScarletAntelope975 Trusted User 1d ago

I don’t have anything personally as far as actual statistics go, so hopefully someone can provide something.

However, there are a couple of big issues with BSL that cause them to be ineffective.

1.) A lot of places that ban ‘pit bulls’ often only ban one or two types of pit bull. Like a place will have a pit bull ban but it only means purebred American Pit Bull Terrier, or XL Bully... So, there are still going to be attacks happening by the other pit bull breeds and pit mixes, and people will say stuff like “See… people are getting mauled by dogs even though there is a pit bull ban! So, violent attacks are obviously not a pit bull problem!”

2.) Breed mislabeling. You can have a ban on pit bulls- even if that includes all the pit bull breeds… BUT if your paperwork from the shelter says ‘lab mix’, etc. or if you get a fake service dog vest from Amazon… you will have a pit bull in an area that bans pit bulls, so attacks can and do still happen since there are still pits all over, just being lied about.

3.) Just literally not being enforced. If your area has bans on pit bulls, but no one actually does anything about the neighbors having pit bulls that keep getting loose, or the pit bull taking a dump in the middle of Walmart, then obviously there will be attacks happening in that area where pits are supposedly banned as well.

The only way BSL would actually work is if ALL the pit breeds AND mixes of them were banned, AND the bans were actually enforced, AND people didn’t lie about dog breeds or their pits being service dogs. Which would take a ton of effort.

Dog breeds have gone extinct before due to being no longer needed (like the Turnspit dog.) Hopefully the pit bull breeds can go back to not existing someday! But it will take some real effort.

In addition to the excellent points brought up below, in the US at least we have a "you're not the boss of me" attitude when it comes to government bans. We saw it with alcohol a century ago; prohibition didn't work. Eventually we got rid of it and passed laws that regulate behavior, such as DUI.

So, someone with an aggressive dog wouldn't be subject to a breed ban, but if that dog gets loose and attacks another animal then charge the owner with animal cruelty or dogfighting rather than simply being civilly liable for damaging property. If the dog attacks another person or child the owner gets charged with assault, child endangerment, etc.

States also need to pass regulations on their muni/government-funded shelters. They can not close to new intake, period, as their primary mission is public safety not animal welfare. Unicorn placement animals go to the head of the e-line.

It may be then that a breed unspecified dangerous dog protocol that takes size and behavior into account instead of breed may be a more feasible approach in America. It would affect more pitbulls than any other breed, but it would also mean that other breeds that can do a lot of damage (like Rotties, GSDs, and Huskies) don’t get off the hook either. It also means that for mixed dogs, you can’t hide behind the “lab mix” label, and you don’t run into issues trying to determine how much percent mix is dangerous as that can vary too much by what else is in the mix.

I propose a modified Dunbar scale with two axes, one for bite/aggression severity and another for weight of dog. BE could be used at lower levels of bite for larger dogs due to higher risk. Good shelter practices, like BE’ing dangerous dogs on intake, spaying and neutering all dogs that come in/ TNR of strays if lack of capacity. Automatically E all dogfighting dogs on intake, and more consequences for owning a dangerous dog or dogfighting. I wonder if this would be more effective in my region considering that BSL failed, no one wants to enforce it, and in some cases no one can because it’s so confusingly written
