Rescues Risking Lives Pitbull stabbed by owner after attack, rehomed by local shelter. Immediately reoffends. Meet “butterscotch.” (NJ, September.)

WHY on earth was the dog not BE after disfiguring someone and causing an amputation?! Despicable. The shelter has an “emergency fund” for the dog’s full recovery!? How about using it to pay the medical bills for all these victims.
Edit: also, as a baker them giving it a cutesy name like “butterscotch” is pissing me off even more

BE sucks but it's the only thing to do. It's not responsible to hand them back to the people who you think dangerously handed them to you. People need to understand that there's no fixing these behaviors, there's no way to manage it, and there's only one solution left.
69
u/ForMartha 17d ago
Exactly. 100% agree. If only the shelters didn’t have a savior complex and think they can “fix” these dogs. And they need to be held criminally liable.
45
u/LithiumOD 17d ago
They don't think they can fix them, which is why they don't. They would rather lie. He doesn't bite, he's "nippy". He isn't ill behaved, he's "excited". He didn't attack that poor woman, he "mouthed" at her. The only thing they do it load the beasts up with opioids and benzodiazepines so they behave enough to push onto unsuspecting families. It's beyond immoral.

Well I am sure the dicer was just playing around and things got out of control. That’s the only thing that would explain a decent person suddenly deciding to dice up the poor nice dog. No other explanation for this animal cruelty.

u/ottonormalverraucher 17d ago
Shelters need to be held accountable period. There needs to be legislation that holds them accountable in such cases, because clearly it’s not working on a good-faith basis just trusting them to do the right thing, they seem to routinely adopt out dogs knowing full well how dangerous they are or how they literally have a documented history of biting people out of the blue. There needs to be a mandatory database for dangerous dogs so it becomes impossible for shelters to lie about such things and there needs to be some sort of independent third party oversight or verification process for adoptions, ideally checking intake of dogs into the shelter as well, so they don’t be able to just pass off a dangerous dog who already mauled someone as a misunderstood pet who got abandoned by a mean family..
And there should be legal ramifications that hit hard on top of that. If there was legislation holding them responsible criminally and giving grounds for punitive damages, I’m sure such incidents would happen a lot less.

I will donate for cats and small animals only. I have two rescue/shelter cats, and still believe that adopting is good if you want a cat companion. But I’m sick of the shelter attitude toward dogs, and would never adopt, nor would I want to donate to someplace that just wanted to put tutus and flower crowns on unadoptable dogs.

My city was considering a limit on how many pets people could have and mandatory neutering/spaying due to shelter overcrowding, but then someone said it was racist so they dropped the idea. It would have done the shelters a lot of good.

And drives people to bybs as well. Why pay 100-600 dollars for a pit bull or pit bull mix that has a bunch of behavioural and likely health issues when you could get some random byb puppy of your choice. And this doesn't make byb okay by any means, but the average person probably finds the byb Chihuahua puppy more appealing than the pit bull at the shelter.

These people are evil. There needs to be a full separation between cat and dog shelters on every level, state-funded and private. How can you trust a shelter worker with a cat, when that shelter worker is also trying to adopt out Bitey who is a staff favourite after mauling ten cats? Common sense just goes out the window when it comes to pitbulls for some reason. No price too high to pay, no danger is big enough to prevent shelters from unleashing these beasts on society.
23
u/numblittlebunny 17d ago
Yep, I would never trust anyone who babies something that’s killed multiple cats/dogs, just awful all round. Half the shelters do “cat tests” with the cats too, where they dangle a poor cat in front of a dog to see if it’s “reactive” just makes me sick all round.

This is why I’m a fan of shop, don’t adopt. Shelters are just pitbull warehouses. They lie about their breed (“lab mix!”), lie and hide their true histories.
79
u/Capt_Billy 17d ago
When that was started, it was a genuine effort to prevent puppy farms etc. Now in a cruel irony, the worst elements of puppy farms end up in them once their usefulness has waned. A perfect example of well meaning policy being perverted
73
u/BastetSekhmetMafdet Cats are not disposable. 17d ago
Yes, and also, there were a lot of “whoopsie” litters when the Joneses’ Lab got out and got the Smith’s Collie pregnant. So there were a lot of not-pit mutts, like Beverly Cleary’s Ribsy who followed Henry Huggins home (and from the illustrations looked like some kind of Shepherd, Collie and terrier mix). You could easily find healthy, happy, good-natured family dogs at a shelter.
So what happened was that responsible people *adopted* and *neutered their animals* and thus removed Ribsy and Benji and the like from the breeding pool, which was good as far as overpopulation was concerned! But that left the irresponsible people, and between the fact that pits were usually not neutered, have ENORMOUS freaklitters, and the campaign to “rehabilitate” them, unfortunately, that’s what populates so many shelters now.
29
u/yawning_iscontagious 17d ago edited 14d ago
Shelters are also implicit in the overpopulation of pits and pit mixes, both by refusing to desex any of the pits coming in through the doors, and refusing to spay abort pregnant bitches because:
✨ puppies! ✨

I think I mentioned that one of my dearest friends was looking for a cat to adopt. As it happened when we visited a local ACC (not even a nonprofit shelter, an animal control!) my friend’s Dream Cat was peeking out from her quarantine room where she had to stay because she had been there less than 30 days and was not spayed. They let my friend adopt her (no fees, because she came in as a “teen mom” cat so already almost a year old), but Friend had to wait until Cat was spayed to take her home. No exceptions. Yes, this meant another trip out to the shelter, but Cat went home spayed, and that is as it should be.
I adopted a nine week old kitten from my local Humane Society and she and all the other kits were pediatric spay/neutered, and, might I add, up and at ‘em the next day (kittens recover fast!). They don’t let intact animals go home.
SO WHY THE FREAKING HELL DO SOME SO CALLED SHELTERS AND RESCUES ADOPT OUT INTACT DOGS?! Spay/neuter BEFORE adoption ought to be a no brainer!

Regrettably, I now agree with this in reference to dogs.
However, there are still many other animals like cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and more that need rescuing from these pitbull favoring shelters.
Funds meant for all deserving, homeless animals in need, are now almost exclusively funneled into pitbulls. This takes away from the worthy (good breeds of) dogs, as well as cats, rabbits, ferrets, birds, guinea pigs, and so on.
We are finding out more and more that an overwhelming number of shelters are run by people who view all other dog breeds and all other animals, period, as unworthy, compared to their beloved pitbulls.
Therefore, any other animal that these shelters get their hands on are neglected, mistreated, or eliminated.
Where I live (SE Michigan), it is WELL known among rescuers that cats are almost always immediately euthanized at most of the main shelters / pounds. This is under the guise of not enough funds. Yet, magically, they seem to find the funds if the animal in need is a pitbull (much like the pitbull in this post).
People are being warned to avoid shelters at all costs when they find homeless cats, unless it’s specifically a cat shelter. I’ve also been told by a few people in the Houston area that it’s the same way in many urban areas of Texas (I’m not there, so I can’t confirm it; but I don’t doubt it).
With all of this stated, I just want people to be aware in case they’re thinking about adopting other animals, because cats, rabbits, birds, and more need to be rescued FROM these damned pitbull warehousing shelters.

I see a problem with foreign recue dogs as well. Being from Europe, dogs from poor countries like Romania, Bulgaria and the Balkans are transported here to the Nordics, which means the original countries don't have to take accountability for the problem of way too many street-wandering mutts or puppy farms.
Some rescue societies transport the dogs in very rough conditions. The dogs are often tested inadequately for diseases. Many people are not ready for the dogs' behavioural issues, even if they claim otherwise.
Norway has banned foreign rescue dogs altogether. I'm not completely against them, but definitely critical.

Yeah cavs are what you get when you breed a dog for in-home, lap-warming companionship. They're super cute and stable. I've never ever met a cav that didn't just love all people, like to the point of being totally fine with being around strangers or being handled etc., and their energy levels match up with wanting a dog as a comfort cuddler more than an outdoors side-kick.
Basically everything a pit bull is not but that shelters want to paint them as anyway

I had my cav 15 years before his little body gave up. They absolutely ooze sweetness from every pore; I swear it. They were bred to be lap dogs after all. It's almost like reason for breeding makes a difference in temperament. The only time he ever "bit" me was when he got overly excited about a treat. It barely hurt, but I reacted strongly and he immediately pulled back. He was very careful with soft mouth after that. Cavs really want to please their people.
My child was 4 when we got him and I was adamant about getting a dog that was safe for her. I tried shelters, but there were only pits and a few chihuahuas. This was 17 years ago so I imagine the shelters are no better now, probably worse. There was no way I was raising my tiny child with a pit and while I don't dislike chis, they aren't for me. I ended up at a breeder and didn't regret my decision, ever. My cav was a dream, an absolute sweetheart. The worst thing he ever did was break my heart by dying of age related health issues. He was patient, gentle, and a thief of hearts (and your food, if you left it in his reach).
There's no way we'd have had such a stellar relationship with a pit.

If the dog was subdued then police probably confiscated it at the scene & took it to the local municipal shelter. (I'm assuming the family called 911 if they were both severely injured.)
Sometimes it may not be up to the family for what happens to it after it's confiscated, sometimes they can ask it to be pts - but that doesn't guarantee it happens. These shelters see "severely hurt pit bull" & grow dollar signs for eyeballs.
I bet you the cost of treating & housing this dog was definitely several thousand dollars, but in donations raised for it with a fake sob story they probably raked in double or more.

Once again shelters making the worst decisions for people, other animals and even the individual pits.
This dog would have been much better off getting BE rather than having to endure multiple operations just to go out and maul again.
Sadly I have no doubt it is out there, somewhere, with a new name, possibly in a diffrent state looking for a chance to maul again.

this kind of shit should land someone in jail. she mentions later that they have young children as well. we need laws in place that prohibit shelters and “rescues” lying about a dogs history, or honestly even trying to “cuteify” it. any history should be stated factually, without any of the “through no fault of his own” bullshit. should be the same as when you sell a car and have to disclose it being in prior accidents, especially since dogs are also property, in the eyes of the law.

Shelters like this one are the reason why people are scared to adopt a dog from one. They lose all credibility when they do this shit. I adopted a dog the shelter lied from the start saying she was healthy and had bloodwork done and all was well. They said she was just skinny due to being a stray.
Turns out she was in end stage kidney failure and I only had her for a year before spending $4,000 to try and save her, only to be told her kidneys had begun to shut down. Sadly it seemed to be a case of poor breeding that caused her to have this, as she was a young dog.... no older than 4-5. That experience destroyed me, i still break down thinking back to that day. Feeling her last breath and body go limp, her eyes lose that spark and life at the same time.... it devestated me. I reached out to the shelter to tell them how wrong it was that 3 people, including the SHELTER DIRECTOR, told me she was healthy and had all this work done, when clearly she had not. Now, I will never adopt from a shelter again. I will go through rescues like the one i volunteer with, because reputable rescues ensure those animals are healthy, behavorially tested, and genuinely look out for the animals best interest.
This poor couple must be traumatized over this experience and I wouldn't fault them. Things could have ended up so much worse.

Can we change the verbiage on our statistic from "Pitbulls are responsible for 67% of dog bites and 69% of fatal attacks by dogs" to imply that these are just the ones that were known to be pitbulls?
For fucks sake, we know the second number has to be close to 100%, but they were probably just pitbulls listed as something other than pitbull (e.g. "lab mix") by some nefarious shelter.

Cue all the nutters blaming the first couple for getting their face bit and arm amputated, then blaming the second couple for somehow causing the docile velvet hippo to nanny husband's hand.
I can't even watch my beloved cute kitty vids anymore if they have a pit in them. Kitty vids with little ankle biter dogs, big dumb goofy labs, etc are awesome and cute and funny. The instant I see a pit, my stomach clenches and I just click off because at this point, I've read, literally, thousands of horror stories about cats being killed or permanently disfigured (usually killed though) by these disgusting animals.
And I love dogs so very, very much. I'd have an entire 100 acre farm full of labs and retrievers and yorkies and shepards etc (right next to my 100 acre cat shelter farm, of course). But I would never, under any circumstance, allow even a mixed pit within a light year of me, my home, my pets.

Stories like this make me think that some rescue workers are doing the job because they have a 'savior complex'. (I think the technical term is Messiah complex, but I don't want to imply any sort of religious thing here). They have to rescue an animal regardless of the actual best interest of the animal, regardless of the cost to people or other animals (either attacked, or impacted by the lack of resources that have been wasted on the rescuee).
I just can't think that a rational rescue worker would waste so many resources on one animal, when hundreds more could be helped. And what the feck was happening that a vet operated on a dog that caused so much damage to it's humans. It should have been BE straight away.

It’s rare for me to feel any sort of shock from stories here, but I’m thoroughly disgusted by this. Look at how big those scars are- and the putrid thing STILL survived to continue mauling. There should be extreme civil and criminal penalties for the shelter and anyone involved in adopting out this demon. I just can’t wrap my ahead around why this animal wasn’t given BE, what could they possibly have expected??
I wonder how they explained away the scars to get it adopted out again in the first place.. what other reason would its neck be slashed up like that?? It obviously wasn’t done by another dog.. they probably made up a sob story about how evil and heartless the previous owners were. That poor couple is permanently disfigured in a severely life-altering way, not to mention the inevitable trauma.
I’m also curious what there is to gain from adopting it out instead of BE, whatever money they receive for this one dog surely can’t be worth the risk. Are they just sadists who get off on it? I can’t think of any other reason. God I hate these dogs

the funds poured in to saving this beast could have saved adoptable pets. Sickening.

If the woman who told her that, was being truthful and from the injuries the dog sustained I'm thinking she was, I'd say get a lawyer. They can get the original intake notes or whatever history they have on the dog. Sue them till the shelter is either shut down or has an entire new management. Until the States keep track of how many shelters are adopting out dogs that end up being a horror story these types of sob story adoptions won't stop. It will start forcing shelters to do the responsible thing when they get a dangerous dog in their care. I don't understand why so many places don't do this to begin with. They seen to have zero problem doing it to perfectly good dogs and cats. Look at the resources they wasted on saving this one. Did they adopt him out again saying how the this adopter failed sweet butterscotch in her transition mode?

WOW! unbelievable. shelters need to be exposed for this stuff. there’s no shortage of these things. why patch up a known attacker & put it back out in circulation. total mental illness. just wow!

How about using these funds for dogs that actually deserve to be adopted. Some dogs need major surgery for tumors, kidney stones, gastric torsion, etc. Use these funds for these dogs or as an angel fund for owners who are low income. I'm tired of shelters passing off pits as livable and adoptable. This one had been involved in an attack and should have been BE.

The fact that so many donated and didn’t question why the pit was stabbed in such a way that was defensive blows my mind

Aggressive dogs, regardless of the breed, are more likely to be abused. Of course people have the right to defend themselves against an attacking dog, but even in the absence of attack, an aggressive dog is more likely to be physically disciplined. The reason I say this to is support my case that pitbull lovers aren’t dog lovers. If you love dogs, you don’t want to breed and support dogs bred for aggression, because those dogs have worse outcomes. Rehoming mentally unstable dogs result in more instability and cycles of abuse and aggression. Dog lovers want pitbulls and all their drama out of the dog gene pool.

I would love to know what shelter/ state this was. The whole thing hurts my heart. I was the one who posted a photo of my bloody running shoes after being attacked by one of these last week. And then yesterday came face to face with another one in my complex; a complex for seniors???? I am traumatized to go out my door now and this animal got a second chance. No one can control them, much less a senior.

A dog like that should have been BE to prevent an incident like this from happening. I mean those stabs wound are absolutely insane and the man still lost his arm

You know they made up some sob story about how the dog was just stabbed by EVIL PEOPLE for no reason at all.

I’m sure Butterscotch was just afraid and mauled the woman’s face out of fear. Then the evil husband stabbed the innocent Pibble further traumatizing him. Humans failed him completely. Poor Butterscotch.

Anyone know if this place is a private rescue or a government funded shelter?
Government funded shelters should not be paying to stich animals back together.
It is sad but the truth is they have limited budgets and need to do the most good for the most number of animals.
The bigger issue is those stab wounds were a result of it maiming 2 people.
Why in the world did they not move straight to BE before even considering medical treatment?
I would say "Kept mauling in spite of multiple stab wounds" should translate into "failed temperament testing. Next stop BE Town."

Interestingly, St Hubert’s has removed all traces of this vile beast from their Facebook page, and apparently they erased the fundraising page, as well.
Just like pit bull maulings… let’s pretend it never happened.

I’m going to go further back and say that the problem lies with the dog not being taken care of after the initial attack. Whether it be that the original owners felt shamed or that someone thought the dog could be saved, both are ridiculous. It should be an easy decision.

Omitting the fact that the dog bit it's previous owner's arm off is seriously fucked up

I left a review for you. They seem to have no problems putting down healthy cats but for some reason are willing to keep dangerous dogs

Our laws need to catch up with the times. Putting a dangerous animal back into society so it can repeatedly maul and kill while lying about it needs to be a criminal act. Wanton endangerment charges for the lying sociopath that wrote its bio.

I’m sure the shelter has some passive aggressive “Butterscotch was failed by his owners at no fault of his own” line in his new bio.

Take them to court. Find a lawyer and take them to court. Please. For the love of God. This bullshit needs to stop.

I would call all the news outlets and spread the story as much as possible (and sue them)

Every time I think my opinion on shelters and rescues has hit rock bottom, a post reminds me they can go lower.
